One afternoon when the weather was absolutely perfect, the sunshine was warm and the breeze was gently blowing—it felt too nice to stay at home. On days like that, it is so fun to grab a delicious cup of coffee and wander through the little streets of Yeonnam-dong, right? I was looking for a café that would be good for a Yeonnam-dong date or a casual meet-up with a friend, and this time I visited Pip Espresso Bar (피프에스프레소바).

Honestly, I am not usually someone who can distinguish coffee flavors in great detail. Rather than talking about acidity or body, I simply like coffee that tastes good when I drink it. But this was one of those places where I thought, “Oh, the coffee here is good!” The subtle aroma came through, and I liked how clean it tasted from the first sip. Having it with dessert made the coffee even more appealing.

## Pip Espresso Bar in a Yeonnam-dong Side Street

Pip Espresso Bar is on Seongmisan-ro 29-gil in Mapo, Seoul. It is in a spot where you can stroll slowly while taking in Yeonnam-dong’s distinctive side-street atmosphere, so rather than visiting just for the café, it would be nice to include it in a Yeonnam-dong date itinerary. Yeonnam-dong has so many pretty cafés and good restaurants—you can have a meal and then look for a café, or stop by a café and take a walk through the streets afterward.

The weather was especially lovely that day, so I was already in a good mood before even walking into the café. With a clear sky, warm sunshine, and just the right amount of breeze, it was the kind of day that made me want to take my time over a cup of coffee.

If you visit Pip Espresso Bar expecting a typical tiny espresso bar, the space may feel bigger than you expect. It has an outdoor terrace as well as indoor seating, so on a nice day it had a great atmosphere for enjoying coffee outside. ## A Terrace Café Is Best on a Sunny Afternoon

The weather on the day I visited was truly wonderful. On days like these, with warm sun and cool breezes, sitting on a terrace feels much nicer than staying indoors. You can set down a cup of coffee, watch people pass by, and chat about this and that with a friend.

Yeonnam-dong itself is a neighborhood with plenty to see on foot, so it was a nice route for taking a short break at a café before heading back out. If you are planning a Yeonnam-dong date, I think it would be lovely to have a meal at a good restaurant, enjoy dessert and coffee at Pip Espresso Bar, then stroll slowly through the side streets. On a nice day, the terrace-café atmosphere makes the time at the café itself feel like part of the date.

## What We Ordered at Pip Espresso Bar

That day, we ordered an iced Americano, tiramisu, and affogato. Someone who really knows coffee might have ordered a variety of espresso drinks at an espresso bar, but I do not enjoy coffee on that expert level, so I chose the iced Americano I knew best. Then tiramisu and affogato for dessert, too! To give you the conclusion first: it was really delicious. The coffee in particular was better than I expected, so it stayed with me.

### How Was the Iced Americano?

I started with the iced Americano. Since I normally cannot tell coffee flavors apart very well, I ordered it without huge expectations. But I could catch a gentle coffee aroma from the moment I picked up the glass, and the aroma felt clearer than expected when I took a sip. It had coffee’s characteristic slight bitterness, without leaving an overly heavy feeling in my mouth afterward.

When coffee is too bitter or tastes too strongly burnt, I start looking for water after just a few sips, but this Americano was perfectly fine alongside dessert. Especially after a bite of tiramisu, a sip of Americano brought the sweetness together with the coffee’s bitterness, and I kept reaching for more.

From the perspective of someone who does not know coffee well, it was good enough to make me think, “This coffee is delicious, though?” As you would expect from an espresso specialist, it felt like they put a lot of care into the coffee itself. My impression was that this was not just a café to visit for the atmosphere, but a place where you can properly enjoy both coffee and dessert.

### The Tiramisu and Americano Combination

And one of the items I was personally looking forward to: the tiramisu! Tiramisu is one of my favorite desserts to have with coffee, so I ordered it with the Americano. It is a dessert where soft cream and coffee aroma come together, making it an especially fitting choice for an espresso bar.

With one bite, the soft cream came through first, followed by a subtle, slightly bitter coffee flavor. I liked that it was not tiramisu that was merely sweet—the coffee flavor was there, too. Most of all, the balance was great when I had it with coffee. One bite of tiramisu, one sip of Americano. You really cannot go wrong with that combination. Since the tiramisu itself was soft, it also went beautifully with the clean taste of the iced Americano.

Pip Espresso Bar’s tiramisu is in fact often mentioned as one of its signature desserts, and the menu currently listed includes classic tiramisu as well as several seasonal tiramisu options. So if I visit again, I would be curious about the other desserts, but I think I would still order the tiramisu again.

### You Cannot Leave Out the Affogato

And the affogato we ordered alongside everything else. What more is there to say about the combination of coffee and ice cream? It tasted even better on a warm afternoon, with the cold ice cream and coffee coming together.

At first, you get the sweet, smooth taste of the ice cream, then the deep aroma of coffee follows. An affogato is a relatively easy drink to enjoy even for someone who does not drink much coffee, so I think it would be a good choice for anyone unfamiliar with coffee flavors. For someone like me who does not know coffee well, starting with a menu item like this might actually be a nice idea.

The iced Americano was clean and refreshing, the tiramisu was soft and sweet, and the affogato was all about that ice-cream-and-coffee combination. Switching between the three gave each one a different charm, and they were also great for two people to share.

## Delicious Even If You Do Not Know Coffee Well

This is the point I most want to make about this visit. I really do not know coffee well. I do not know much about professional details such as bean varieties, brewing methods, acidity, or body; I simply care about whether it tastes good when I drink it. At Pip Espresso Bar, I liked the coffee from its aroma onward. The scent when I brought the cup close was nice, and the coffee tasted good in my mouth, too. More than anything, it felt like the coffee and dessert went well together without getting in each other’s way.

That is why I thought it would be worth visiting not only for coffee lovers, but also for people like me who do not know coffee all that well. The menu has a range of coffee and signature drinks built around espresso, including Cremoso, Panna Salata, Panna Nero, Pip Coffee, Ferrero, and Granita. Next time, I would like to try one of Pip’s signature coffees instead of an Americano. There were especially many coffee drinks topped with cream, so I think it would also suit anyone who likes the cream coffees that are popular these days.
