## In short

Bueokgan Chinese Haeundae Branch is an upscale Chinese restaurant on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae, Busan. On a weekend evening visit with a friend, the order was poached-egg pork belly ganjjajang (10,000 won), mapo tofu rice bowl (12,000 won) and black vinegar sweet and sour sirloin pork (28,000 won), while the pai huang gua (smashed cucumber salad) was sold out. Between the clean-tasting ganjjajang, the deeply seasoned mapo tofu and the European-style interior, Bueokgan Chinese suits both family gatherings and dates.

## Two restaurants in one building: Bueokgan European and Chinese

Bueokgan has a European restaurant and a Chinese restaurant in the same building, so I hesitated a moment at the entrance. That day I was craving Chinese food a bit more, so I headed straight into the Chinese side.

![The building housing both the European restaurant and Chinese restaurant of Bueokgan](https://img.superchart.com/images/haeundae-chinese-mapo-tofu-rice-dinner/haeundae-chinese-mapo-tofu-rice-dinner-04-1ilua-900.webp)

With Bueokgan European Restaurant and the Chinese restaurant both in the same building, I hesitated before going in, but since I wanted Chinese food a bit more that day, I went straight into the Chinese side.

I was surprised by how sophisticated the atmosphere was — is this really a Chinese restaurant?

With George Nelson bubble lamps fitting perfectly into the European-style interior, and furniture placed with real sense, this felt like an upscale dining spot — great for family gatherings or more formal occasions 😊 Already satisfied with this warm, pleasant space!

## What's on the menu, and why pai huang gua sold out on a weekend night

Bueokgan Chinese's menu covers the basics — jjajang, ganjjajang, jjamppong — as well as rice bowls and fried rice. They even had cucumber jjajangmyeon (pai hwang gwa), rare for a typical Chinese restaurant, but unfortunately it was sold out on our weekend evening visit.

True to a Chinese restaurant, they have the basics — jjajang, ganjjajang, jjamppong — plus rice dishes like rice bowls and fried rice. They even had cucumber jjajangmyeon, which you rarely see at typical Chinese restaurants, and I was so glad to see it — but sadly it was sold out 🫠 Probably because it was a weekend evening..

And of course, various dishes along with the Chinese liquor that goes perfectly with them haha. A flawless menu lineup. There was so much I wanted to try, but since it was my first visit, I played it safe and went with the recommended dishes.

🏷 What we ordered

- Poached-egg pork belly ganjjajang 10,000 won
- Mapo tofu rice bowl 12,000 won
- Black vinegar pork with sirloin 28,000 won

## Poached-egg pork belly ganjjajang: smoky, never heavy

Bueokgan Chinese's poached-egg pork belly ganjjajang (10,000 won) felt like a dish focused on quality over quantity. There was none of the heaviness typical of jjajang, with a subtle smoky flavor coming through — I understood why this is the most beloved dish on the menu.

First, the ganjjajang and mapo tofu rice bowl arrived.

The poached egg on top, with its runny yolk trickling down, made the ganjjajang look incredibly appetizing at first glance.

Rather than going for a huge portion like a typical Chinese restaurant, this felt like a dish focused on quality — and I actually liked that even more 💕

The noodles were smoothly coated with sauce, and there was a generous amount of onion, pork belly, and other ingredients.

One bite and there was zero heaviness from the jjajang sauce! The balance of subtle smokiness and clean flavor was perfect 🫢👍 Wow.. I can't remember the last time I had a ganjjajang I liked this much. No wonder it's the most beloved dish at Bueokgan Chinese 😍

## Mapo tofu rice bowl: rich sauce that keeps the rice going

Unlike the ganjjajang, the mapo tofu rice bowl (12,000 won) came in a fairly generous portion. Instead of a watered-down imitation sauce, it had a spicy, tingly, salty-and-savory seasoning that soaked in deeply, delivering real umami.

The mapo tofu rice bowl looked like it had a fairly generous portion compared to the ganjjajang.

My friend, who was originally a jjajang devotee but recently discovered the charms of mapo tofu bowls, tried it and said it was seriously delicious 😋😍

Stealing a bite, I found it wasn't a watered-down imitation sauce at all — the distinctive spicy, tingly, salty-savory seasoning of mapo tofu was soaked in deeply, delivering real umami 👏👏 The soft tofu that got more satisfying the more you chewed, paired with minced meat, was an absolute rice thief haha. If you want real mapo tofu, definitely visit Bueokgan Chinese 🫶

## Black vinegar sweet and sour sirloin pork: enough for 3-4 people

Bueokgan's signature black vinegar pork with sirloin (28,000 won) is flavored with Chinese black vinegar sauce. The portion is mountainous, making it a solid side dish for 3-4 people.

The last dish was Bueokgan's signature sweet and sour pork, made with a sauce from Chinese black vinegar for a deeper, richer flavor.

After filling up a bit on the ganjjajang and mapo tofu, this mountain of sweet and sour pork showed up? I was a little taken aback, but of course we finished it all without leaving a scrap ✌️ haha. As a side dish, it seems like a good fit for 3-4 people.

With plenty of onion piled on top, it was easy to eat alongside, and the black vinegar sauce especially was amazing. Its distinctive sweet-and-sour tang completely cut through any heaviness ☺️

The fried coating wasn't thick either — thin and crisp, in the authentic sweet and sour pork style. The sirloin was thick enough to have real bite, savory and juicy the more you chewed ❣️
