What struck me most walking in was the atmosphere — unlike a typical Vietnamese restaurant, it genuinely felt like stepping into an actual Vietnamese eatery transplanted into the city. The staff are foreign and the interior really carries that local feel. The tables and chairs aren't all matched to one style either, they're all different, and somehow that mismatched, natural look made the place feel even more authentically Vietnamese.

A deep, no-frills broth — that's the Kkamon pho. The first thing I ordered was Kkamon's signature pho. It's 11,000 won, and the broth, simmered from beef shank and brisket, is generous enough that it feels like good value.

Rather than being loaded with extra flavors, this is a pho that sticks to the basics, but the broth itself is really deep and rich. From the very first spoonful you get that strong meaty broth flavor, but it never feels heavy or greasy.

The thin slices of meat on top were generous too, tender rather than chewy, so they went well with the broth. I also tried the sweet-and-sour pickled onions served alongside, and they were a great refreshing match. With bites of tangy pickled onion in between spoonfuls of the rich pho broth, my palate kept resetting, and I found myself reaching for more and more. If you want extra, you can just grab more from the self-serve bar.

With a truly authentic Vietnamese restaurant, the flavors can sometimes be a bit too local for some palates. But Kkamon's pho keeps that distinctive Vietnamese character while staying approachable for Korean tastes, so I think just about anyone would enjoy it.

For a heartier meal, there's the fried rice office-worker set. The second thing I ordered was this set. True to its name, it's built to be a filling lunch for office workers, and the portion is bigger than expected — it felt like about 1.5 servings.

On top of the fluffy stir-fried rice sat sautéed meat and a fried egg with a runny yolk. Breaking the yolk a bit and eating it with the rice and meat doubled the savory flavor, and the crunchy fried onion flakes scattered throughout added a nice texture that made the meal fun to eat.

I also liked the water spinach that came with it. Its crisp texture was still intact, with a subtly nice aroma, and it paired well with the Kkamon fried rice.

What I liked most about this set menu at a Jeongja-dong restaurant is that it comes with pho broth on the side. Eating warm broth alongside the fried rice, rather than just fried rice alone, made it feel like a properly complete meal.
