## In short

Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is an iron-lid Korean BBQ restaurant in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Guui Station and 5 minutes from Jayang Market. This visit covered ordering pork belly and kkodeulsal (chewy pork skirt meat) together with the staff grilling service, self-serve wrap greens, cheese-bomb steamed egg, and fried rice cooked in the iron lid at the end. Parking is easiest at the temporary public lot in Jayang District 5 across the street, and the charcoal-grilled beef at Ssamchae is saved for a next visit.

Meat tastes different depending on what you grill it on, right? And one of the best surfaces out there is the iron lid — it's basically magic, making even ordinary meat taste amazing. So what happens when you use that magic on really good meat?

That's exactly what you get at Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, a Jayang-dong restaurant known for its Korean BBQ. Let's dig in together!

## How far is Ssamchae from Guui Station, and where do you park?

Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is about a 5-minute walk from Guui Station, and also about 5 minutes from Jayang Market, famous for its Saemaeul Gupanjang (old-style general store).

For parking, there's now a large temporary public parking lot across the street to the east in Jayang District 5, which is convenient to use.

We came by bike, haha.

The concept here competes with Sangguune Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, and similar to that place, small beers are just ₩1,900! Soju and beer are also sold cheaply here, making it a solid Jayang-dong restaurant find.

## Small side dish plates, unlimited refills at the self-serve zone

Walking into the restaurant, the side dishes were already neatly set out in anticipation of a busy crowd.

Why so small a portion? Because you can just scoop more from the self-serve zone.

The self-serve zone is packed with wrap greens and side dishes — that's how Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, this Jayang-dong Korean BBQ favorite, handles it.

## Ordering pork belly and kkodeulsal together: iron lid or charcoal?

Is it just the iron lid, though? No way. You can also order charcoal grilling. The brazier was really unique — I'm planning to come back for charcoal-grilled beef next time.

We prefer pork, so we ordered pork belly and kkodeulsal. Of course, the staff grills it for you.

Here's the kimchi, bracken, and bean sprout mix that goes on top once the meat is nearly done.

Slurp. I can't wait to eat. Time to enjoy this Jayang-dong BBQ class act.

Listening to a bit of that sizzling ASMR,

the staff came back to flip the meat and grill it carefully.

We deliberately ordered our beer late so it would arrive right as the meat finished cooking! Super refreshing. The glass was so pretty too, I'm already thinking of coming back just for a beer.

Watching them slide the scissors while cutting confirmed it — definitely a pro.

## What is the cheese-bomb steamed egg at Ssamchae?

Ta-da!!!

This is the cheese-bomb steamed egg. I should have waited a bit before taking the photo instead of snapping it right away, haha.

The combination of cheese and steamed egg is really great.

It's also nice and bouncy.

Oh! Meanwhile the meat finished cooking, piled high with kimchi, bean sprouts, and bracken. When this is around, I tend to skip the wraps... if you want wraps, this is the timing to grab plenty of wrap greens.

In the meantime, don't forget the steamed egg as a palate cleanser — the cheese has melted into a thick, gooey texture.

## How the kkodeulsal and pork belly tasted

The meat quality was excellent. The kkodeulsal had a wonderfully chewy texture, while the pork belly was savory and full of juice. You know how a lot of people eat Canadian frozen pork belly? This is way more savory and chewier than that.

Let's eat quick...

Ah. Even in photos, you can feel the beauty of this meat.

These are the fresh wrap greens at Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, that Jayang-dong Korean BBQ favorite. If you love wraps, there's no reason to go anywhere else.

We only lightly grilled some eggplant, but wow... eggplant soaked in oil is really the best.

## Finishing with fried rice in the iron lid

Since it's an iron lid, the finale is fried rice. The staff spreads pre-fried rice evenly across the lid, and as it soaks up the remaining oil, it turns into rich, savory fried rice.

As always, rice is the true source of a Korean's strength.

And that's our exploration of Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, that Jayang-dong Korean BBQ favorite. While we were eating, the table across from us was having charcoal-grilled beef... whoa, it looked so good, even better than what we had. Next time, beef exploration!
