## In short

Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch is a small Japanese-style rice bowl restaurant in an alley off Ajou-ro 47beon-gil in Paldal-gu, Suwon. Two diners shared a weekday lunch here: the gyudon set (10,900 won) with mini soba noodles and the side swapped for a sweet potato and cheese croquette, plus a single chasudon (10,900 won). The seasoning at Gyudongjip is mild rather than sharp and the portions are generous, but a line forms by around noon, so it is best to avoid peak lunch hour.

> Somewhere to get a filling yet clean meal on a weekday lunch break

Looking for a place near Ajou University that wasn't too heavy but still felt like a proper meal, I ended up at Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch. It's a small spot, good for solo dining but also nice for a light meal for two, so I picked it for lunch.

## Where is Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch and how do you get there?

Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch is on the 1st floor at 23 Ajou-ro 47beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon. From the Ajou University intersection, head into the alley between Mom's Touch and Compose Coffee and keep walking — you'll find the restaurant on your left. Deciding on your order from the menu board outside before going in saves some time!

It's open weekdays 11:00-21:00, and closed every Saturday and Sunday. For parking, the Uman 2-dong Public Parking Lot is recommended.

## How big is Gyudongjip and what are the seats like?

![Interior of the compact Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-03-14mw2-966.webp)

The restaurant itself is pretty small. Rather than a big dining hall with lots of tables, it feels more like a compact rice bowl shop with just the seats it needs.

There are bar-style seats for solo diners, so eating alone doesn't feel awkward, and there are 2-person tables too, which made it easy for two of us to visit. Personally, I thought this layout suits groups of two best.

![Table with tablet ordering system](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-05-861bc-966.webp)

Each table has a tablet ordering system, so you can take your time browsing the menu, and the basic side dishes are set out neatly too.

## Gyudongjip menu and prices

The menu centers on gyudon, chasudon, and yukhoedon, with both set (jeongsik) and han-sang combo options.

- Gyudon (single) ₩7,900
- Karai gyudon ₩8,500
- Gyudon han-sang ₩10,900
- Chasudon ₩10,900
- Chasudon set ₩12,500
- Yukhoedon ₩9,500
- Yukhoedon set ₩10,900

That day, we ordered the gyudon han-sang and a chasudon single. For the gyudon han-sang, I picked mini mobil (buckwheat noodles) and swapped the side for the sweet potato-cheese croquette.

## The gyudon set with a sweet potato and cheese croquette side

![Gyudon han-sang tray with mini mobil, side dish, and poached egg](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-08-11b9j-1200.webp)

The gyudon han-sang (₩10,900) comes with the gyudon as the centerpiece, plus mini mobil, a side dish, a poached egg, and banchan (side dishes), all packed neatly onto one tray. What I liked most was how clean everything looked overall.

The gyudon's beef was well seasoned but less intense than I expected. The sweet sauce paired well with the rice, and there was a generous amount of meat, which made it filling for lunch.

You pop the yolk of the poached egg over the gyudon and mix it in with the rice and meat. Adding the egg makes the whole bowl a bit softer and more savory.

The mini mobil was a nice addition too.

Eating rice bowls back to back can start to feel heavy, but having the cold, chewy buckwheat noodles in between cleaned my palate nicely.

![Sweet potato-cheese croquette side dish swap](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-12-mazm5-966.webp)

I swapped the side for the sweet potato-cheese croquette and it was really satisfying haha. It came out piping hot, crispy on the outside, with sweet potato and cheese melting inside — great to eat one at a time between bites.

## What does the chasudon taste like?

![Chasudon single dish piled generously with chashu](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-13-tv2am-966.webp)

The chasudon (₩10,900) piles chashu generously over rice. The meat had a subtle smoky char, and the sauce wasn't overly salty or sweet, so it went well with the rice.

![Close-up of smoky chasudon meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-14-1c2xo-966.webp)

Eating the gyudon and chasudon side by side made the difference in flavor stand out even more. The gyudon leaned soft and mild, while the chasudon had more emphasis on the smoky char and the meat's own flavor.

![Gyudon and chasudon compared side by side](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-15-r45gl-966.webp)

When picking a lunch spot near Ajou University, I'd say go for gyudon if you usually like beef rice bowls, and chasudon if you want to enjoy the meat's flavor more directly.

What I liked about Gyudongjip was that the food wasn't overly intense. Rice bowls can sometimes hit you with strong, salty, or sweet seasoning, but here I could keep eating the rice and meat without it feeling like too much.

The portions were bigger than expected!!! The han-sang set has a varied lineup, so it felt much more filling after finishing it than it looked at first. The staff were friendly too, so there was nothing uncomfortable about the meal.

## How long is the lunch wait at noon?

That said, since Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch is a compact restaurant, seats get tight during peak lunch hours. I visited around noon and a line had already formed right after us. Given how many Ajou University students come by at lunchtime, it's worth timing your visit carefully!!

![Naver receipt review event notice at the restaurant](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-17-5npj1-966.webp)

There's also a Naver receipt review event running, so check it out if that's useful for you!

> A rice bowl place to remember when you don't want to agonize over what to eat for lunch!!

The gyudon han-sang was filling since it let us try several things at once, and the chasudon's smoky, meaty flavor gave us good variety in the menu choices. If you're near Ajou University looking for a clean Japanese-style rice bowl, it's worth a stop.

## Is Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch worth a visit?

Since the restaurant isn't large, I felt it suits meals for 1-2 people better than big group gatherings.

![Seating at Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch suited for 1-2 diners](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-18-12n1t-966.webp)

For students or office workers eating solo, the bar table makes it easy, and for two people, ordering one dish each at a 2-person table and sharing seems like a good option too.

I'd recommend it for days near Ajou University when you need lunch but want an actual rice meal rather than something quick like a burger or bunsik (Korean snack food).

![Budget-friendly lunch spread near Ajou University](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch/gyudongjib-ajou-croquette-lunch-22-8orf2-966.webp)

The value for the price seemed good too, so this should work well for anyone looking for a budget-friendly meal near Ajou University!!
