I was looking for a restaurant in Yeouido to grab lunch with a coworker and ended up at the newly opened Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido. It only opened in late July 2026, so I was curious to check it out — and since it's a chain that operates nationwide, I wanted to see what it was like firsthand.

My coworker and I visited together and ordered one grilled mackerel set and one grilled hairtail set, then split both. Grilled fish dishes can sometimes feel similar to each other, so it was fun being able to compare mackerel and hairtail side by side in one meal.

We got to Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido around 11am, just before the lunch rush really kicked in. At that hour, it was easy to grab a seat and take our time choosing what to order.

Adding grilled hairtail (galchi) made the table so much more satisfying. Part of the fun of grilled fish is picking the flesh off the bone yourself, and eating it while it was still warm, the meat was soft and mild.

Mackerel and hairtail have pretty different flavor profiles, so switching back and forth kept things from getting repetitive. Nutty mackerel, then flaking off hairtail, then back to rice and side dishes — it made for a surprisingly hearty lunch.

## Self bar: tteokbokki and sungnyung (scorched rice tea)

Honestly, the self bar was one of my favorite parts. Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), sungnyung (scorched rice tea), and side dishes were all set up for free use throughout the meal.

Trying a bit of tteokbokki before digging into the fish was nice, and warm sungnyung afterward made a great palate cleanser.

For an office lunch, having small extras like this instead of just wolfing down rice and leaving makes the meal a bit more enjoyable. Between the main dishes and the self bar, we got to take our time and actually enjoy lunch.
