Haemullae, newly opened in Myeongji. One hot plate is piled high with abalone, large shrimp, whole squid, and meaty pork backbones. Enjoy seafood and meat together, then properly finish with cheese fried rice.

## A seafood jjim specialist found in Myeongji International New City

On a weekday evening, I visited Haemullae in Myeongji for dinner with an acquaintance. It is in the Myeongji International New City commercial area, and the large yellow sign reading “hot-plate seafood pork bone jjim specialist” made it easy to spot even from a distance.

We came by car, and being able to use the JT Plaza building parking lot took away some of the worry about parking. Parking can quietly be an important consideration when dining in Myeongji, so building parking was a nice plus.

## Haemullae’s neat interior

Once inside, the interior was quite neat, with a different feel from the exterior. Wood-toned tables and chairs sit against black walls, while seafood-inspired posters hang on the walls, giving the space an overall modern feel.

The tables are not packed too closely together, and the space is mainly made up of four-person tables, so it looked suitable for a meal with friends, a family dinner, or an evening gathering. I visited on a weekday evening, and the calm atmosphere made it a good place to remember when deciding on dinner in Myeongji, Busan.

## Hot-plate seafood pork bone jjim for 2, ₩46,000

We ordered Haemullae’s signature hot-plate seafood pork bone jjim for two, ₩46,000. The two-person order comes with abalone, shrimp, squid, pork neck bones, and fried squid.

![Two-person set with abalone, shrimp, squid, and pork backbones](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongji-haemulrae-cheese-fried-rice/myeongji-haemulrae-cheese-fried-rice-07-1z0e1-900.webp)

The moment the food arrived, it looked generous right away. A generous bed of bean sprouts was topped with abalone, large shrimp, whole squid, and pork backbones, and then crispy fried squid on top! What really sets it apart from a typical seafood jjim (braised seafood) is being able to eat seafood and pork backbones all at once.

## Pork backbones add deep savory flavor to the seafood

The abalone was fairly large and the shrimp plump, but it was not only the seafood that was plentiful. The pork backbones also had a good amount of meat on them, so they were satisfying to pick clean.

Because the pork backbones are cooked together in the seafood jjim sauce, the savory flavor from the meat seemed to make the seasoning taste quite deep too. There were plenty of bean sprouts, adding a crisp texture and soaking up the sauce nicely, so they were good to pick up with the pork or squid. What I especially liked was that the seafood had no fishy taste and the pork backbones had almost no unwanted smell.

When seafood and meat are cooked together, one aroma can sometimes overpower the other, but both were clean-tasting here, so I kept reaching for more. I had the whole squid for its chew, took a bite of a big shrimp, then picked apart another meaty pork backbone—so there were lots of flavors and textures to enjoy from the same hot plate. I think this would suit anyone looking for a more filling Myeongji seafood jjim than one filled only with seafood.

## A generous spread topped with fried squid

The fried squid on top was a special treat too. There is squid in the seafood jjim, and adding fried squid as well meant enjoying the same ingredient with a completely different texture. I first had a crispy bite on its own, then lightly dipped it in the hot-plate seafood pork bone jjim sauce as instructed on the guide, and the spicy sauce paired so well with the fritter.

The table guide explained ways to pair the seafood with bang-a chimichurri sauce, the pork backbones with special wasabi soy sauce, and the fried squid with the hot-plate sauce. The bang-a chimichurri sauce was completely my taste—you really need one sauce serving per person.

## Warm potato salad was a standout among the side dishes

The basic side dishes were not something to simply pass over, either. There was dressed chives, cabbage salad, corn salad, pickled radish, and fried tofu, but the warm potato salad was what stayed with me most.

It was soft and fluffy, and as I ate it I thought, “Put this between bread and it would instantly be a salad sandwich, wouldn’t it?” haha. Since the main dish is spicy, having some of the soft potato salad in between refreshed the palate, so it was a great pairing.

## Definitely add cheese to the fried rice

After eating a good amount of the seafood jjim, it felt too wasteful to leave the remaining sauce behind. So for the finale, we ordered fried rice for ₩3,000 plus the ₩3,000 cheese add-on.

The menu even called the cheese add-on “highly recommended,” and after trying it, I understood why. The owner fries the rice personally, adding rice and seaweed flakes to the leftover sauce before melting a generous amount of cheese over it. The spicy sauce became a little gentler, while the nutty richness really came alive.

We said we were full at first, yet it was the dish we kept spooning up until the very end. What we had that day was hot-plate seafood pork bone jjim for two at ₩46,000, fried rice at ₩3,000, and a cheese add-on at ₩3,000, for a total of ₩52,000.

## Haemullae seafood jjim in Myeongji

Haemullae in Myeongji, where I visited on a weekday evening. The generous seafood selection of abalone, large shrimp, and whole squid was impressive, but most of all, the meaty pork backbones made it possible to enjoy seafood and meat at the same time.

There were plenty of bean sprouts, and the pork backbones made the sauce full of savory flavor. The seafood was clean without fishiness, while the pork backbones were clean without any unwanted smell. The combination of whole squid plus crispy fried squid was fun, and finishing with cheese fried rice made the meal feel properly complete!

With building parking available, this Myeongji seafood jjim is worth a visit for anyone looking for a dinner with friends or a family meal, or for anyone who normally loves both seafood jjim and braised pork backbones.
