Five family members and their dog Choco stayed one night for their mom's 60th birthday, secretly setting up balloons on the second floor, grilling 6 geun of meat at the yard barbecue zone, sitting around the fire pit, and watching sunrise at Yeongjin Beach the next morning. With this, we're officially done with all our parents' 60th birthdays. Now we gotta start prepping for their 70ths... ha... (there are four parents total, so these events come around every 2-3 years lol. What a blessing... hahaha...) There was zero rain in the forecast until the day of the trip, and then suddenly it started raining and the sky went all gloomy. I like rain, but I hate it when it's this wishy-washy about it. Especially since we needed clear, pretty photos! We stopped at a rest area planning to grab some potatoes but it got too much of a hassle so I didn't even get out lol. That dried filefish on the right is insane though. My sister grilled it up to eat in the car lol. The portion is massive... impressive. ## A dog-friendly family trip: only Choco came along Oh, by the way, our family dog Choco came along on this trip too!! Honestly I'm really bummed out about it. Our Deodeok and Ori are dogs who travel a lot and actually love it — running around on grass, running on the beach, all of it. But somehow it's always fine for tiny little Choco to join family trips while our big, precious Deodeok and Ori can't. They're already 11kg big-eared babies who have a hard time going anywhere, and it kills me that they can't even join family trips (in Korea, dogs above medium size basically can't go anywhere... so sad). For our final stop in Gangneung, we picked 'Yeongjin-gil 51,' right by Yeongjin Beach. We had grilled fish at Sokcho Market and looked around a bit before heading down to Gangneung. Our family is basically all capital-I introverts, so the second we stepped into the market our energy got completely drained lol. Here's the pension!! Even though it was pretty far from Sokcho Market, we still arrived like 20 minutes before check-in time. Cleaning was still in progress, so we let them know and parked first. 'Yeongjin-gil 51' is a private pension with such a spacious yard and easy parking that it was just really comfortable. They said the yard alone is about 200 pyeong! - Address: 357-78 Yeongjin-ri, Yeongok-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea - Check-in 15:00 / Check-out 11:00 - Extra guest: +₩30,000 per person - Pet-friendly, any breed/weight: +₩50,000 (₩30,000 quoted for a small dog) - Early check-in / late check-out (if available): +₩20,000 per hour The sky was still gray at this point. Since the cleaning lady was still working, we parked the car, checked out the exterior, and rested a bit at the fire pit area. The place had such great vibes! Every corner of the yard was so pretty we kept taking pictures. Who knew a cluster of traditional clay pots (jangdokdae) could look this aesthetic?! Lol. But the cleaning was taking forever that day. The cleaning lady was working all alone and honestly looked exhausted. The stairs at this place are steep and tall, and the previous guests had apparently moved all the yard chairs up the stairs, so she was carrying them back down by herself. (Everyone, please practice good manners when you stay places...) Check-in time had already passed with no end in sight, so we told her it was fine and to just head home, and sent her off. I snapped a photo from upstairs as she was finally starting to move our bags in, haha. Look how huge this yard is!! ## Why the separate 1st and 2nd floors suit families with different sleep schedules This is my room on the 2nd floor. We've had family trips before, and it's basically an unwritten rule that family trips always end in fights, right? Especially our last trip to Busan, which was a disaster. Honestly, I'm the black sheep of the family — I'm the only one with a completely different style. Everyone else is STJ, neat-freaks, and loves staying up late, while I'm NFP, laid-back, and the lone sentimental one who wants to look at the stars alone. We just don't understand each other's styles and low-key can't stand them lol. On every trip, I'm the one who falls asleep early, so no matter how much I try to stay up a bit later since it's a trip, the next day becomes brutal. Like, why are you all still up at 3am?? We have a schedule tomorrow too... Even when I try to close my eyes and sleep, we're all sharing the same space, so it gets too noisy, and honestly past trips have been super stressful because of this. But!!! On this trip, since the 1st and 2nd floors at 'Yeongjin-gil 51' are separated, I basically told everyone 'play and drink as much as you want, just guarantee my sleep' and took over the whole 2nd floor by myself lol. And this was genuinely amazing... everyone got to keep their best condition. If you're planning a trip with people whose styles clash like mine, go for a private stay with separated spaces like this. But places like this aren't common. Highly recommend 'Yeongjin-gil 51' in Gangneung! ### Second floor of Yeongjin-gil 51: hinoki tub, vanity and kitchen The 2nd floor had plenty of towels, and there was even a hinoki wood tub. Since the 1st and 2nd floors are completely separate, I thought this would be perfect for two families traveling together? But again, the stairs here are steeper than they look, so be careful! They're steep and annoying enough that nobody even bothers coming up... so private, I love it, so good. One side of the bathroom had a hair dryer and toothpaste, plus body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, so you really just need to bring a toothbrush and other personal essentials. Still on the 2nd floor, haha. I didn't notice this at first, but there's a table right in front of the bathroom? Open the lid and there's a mirror, so it's actually a vanity table, and it made doing my makeup in the morning super convenient! The 2nd floor kitchen was clean and well set up too, with a big fridge. Please ignore the pile of clothes in front... the moment I walked in I just started shedding clothes like a molting animal lol. So. Comfortable. It had everything the 1st floor did, so this place is genuinely ideal for two families or two couples traveling together!!! ### How the layout made the 60th birthday surprise easy to hide And here's the reason I mentioned earlier that the split floors were perfect!!!!! It made secretly prepping mom's 60th birthday event so much easier. We were scrambling to set it up, and before the trip I was actually worried about just sticking balloons to the wall? But turns out it wasn't paper wallpaper!!!!! Amazing!!!!! We stuck them up easily and cleaned up afterward without a trace, haha. Highly recommend this place if you're planning an event too!!!! ### First-floor rooms and what makes them easy with a dog Okay, after checking out the 2nd floor we headed down to the 1st floor. It was great that there were both outdoor and indoor slippers set up right at the entrance. Also, both floors have non-slip pads on the floor, perfect for dogs to walk around comfortably!! Nice touch. There was a sofa in the living room, but we honestly didn't use it much — we spent most of our time at the kitchen table right next to it, haha. The small room is on the right. My parents used the big room on the left, and my sister and her partner used the small room on the right. Both had sliding doors, so passing through the hallway never felt awkward. The TV was only in the small room, but the big room had a slightly bigger bed. There's a Bluetooth speaker in the living room, and the bathroom is similar to the 2nd floor's. Except the 1st floor bathroom has no tub! You'd have to go up to the 2nd floor for the hinoki tub, but nobody except me cared about that lol... everyone else just wanted to eat, drink, and sleep. There was even a coffee machine, so I thought I'd brew myself a cup, but I ended up too lazy and never did — my parents drank instant coffee mix instead, haha. There was also a recycling bin nearby, which was really convenient. I took a video of it too. Okay, my sister's at it again... after the dried filefish, she now brought a whole pile of snacks like that too. I took a photo like 'wow, impressive.' And then she carried those exact snacks back home untouched lol. Jumunjin Market is really close to the pension. It's just around the corner by car, but I think you could even walk there along the beach. If it had just been me and the dogs, we probably would've walked along the beach all the way to the market, haha. Since we'd already booked a barbecue dinner, we had to quickly finish this off first! Manseok Dak-gangjeong (spicy glazed fried chicken) tasted exactly like you'd expect, and honestly the hoe (raw fish) — since I already live near Oido's makeshift markets and eat fresh sashimi regularly, I didn't expect much, but it was surprisingly fresh and delicious!! After scarfing down the chicken and fish, my sister and I hatched a little plot, haha. Meanwhile my dad and brother-in-law had already started drinking and were getting rowdy... Haha, I lied and said I'd gotten hurt to lure my mom upstairs. My dad and mom came rushing up. My dad was cursing at me for scaring him while he ran up, lol. For this birthday, my sister prepared a daily-wear ring mom had wanted, and I went with a straight-up cash bomb, haha. And after this, my dad, mom, and sister all cried... I mean... I was the only capital-F one here?... why though lol lol.. I found it hilarious so I filmed a bunch of embarrassing footage for the archives lol. After the storm passed, we agreed to each take about an hour and a half of alone time. I used mine to soak in the jacuzzi and genuinely healed so much, then came back down right on time lol. Everyone else just kept drinking past the time we agreed to regroup and were already passed out by the time I checked lol. Whether the lights turned on automatically or not, the place looked even more atmospheric once it got dark. ## Yard barbecue and fire pit: 6 geun of meat for 5 people Once it was fully dark, we turned on the barbecue zone lights separately. We grilled using the charcoal and firewood that were provided. They generously offered more charcoal if we ran out, haha. In my family, ever since I was a student, we've always had a meat party every week on our one shared day off. And the unwritten rule since then has always been one geun (600g) per person. This time we prepared 6 geun for 5 people. Choco is obsessed with dad and only has eyes for him, super clingy... I missed our other pups so much, ugh. Total separation anxiety kicking in as the dog owner here... After finishing the meat, we moved right over to the fire pit zone, roasted marshmallows, ate some fruit for dessert, and chatted for ages. At some point, this marshmallow-by-the-fire routine became an unmissable part of our family trips lol. I went up to the 2nd floor around 11:30pm, washed up, and went straight to bed, but apparently the 1st floor kept drinking and partying until 2am. This was honestly the first family trip where I got to spend such completely comfortable time, sleeping deeply without any disturbance. And the morning view on top of that made me so happy. I watch the sunset over the West Sea every day, but since we came all the way to Gangwon-do, we had to go see the sunrise. I woke up around 5am as usual, washed up, got ready, and went downstairs to wake everyone up for a push north to the beach. My parents said there was absolutely no way they could get up and told us to 'please just go without us,' so I dragged just my sister and her partner out by the collar to watch the sunrise, make wishes, and take photos together. Later, looking at the photos, my parents regretted not coming, and my sister admitted getting dragged out was the smartest move of the trip. See? Told you. Heh heh heh. I took a ton of gorgeous photos of them. My own photos though... what even are these, haha. We ended up bickering again on this trip too lol. Since we came back early, we didn't end up with as many photos as I'd hoped — we took over 1,500 photos total, and somehow fewer than 20 are of me? These shameless people I swear... lol. I actually knew this would happen since I'm always the one taking photos, so I brought a tripod to take pictures of myself too... but left the remote at home lol. Too lazy to fix it, so I just settled for 20 photos, lol. We rushed back into the pension and I quickly caught the sunrise view from the 2nd floor too. It was genuinely insane. Even standing right here to take photos would've given great shots. I got a video of the 2nd floor too — filmed after finishing up cleaning, haha. Looking around again in the morning, the 2nd floor closet had extra bedding, and the vanity table came in super handy!!! So, so convenient!! Also, I broke a sweat cleaning up the balloons in the 2nd floor after the photos, but both floors had AC units scattered around so it stayed comfortable and pleasant. And in the morning, we finally properly went up to check out the 3rd floor rooftop... honestly the stairs are steep and could be especially dangerous after drinking, so I didn't think we'd use it much, especially since my mom is scared of stairs. But this space also had a large table and a fire pit for a proper fire session, plus the ocean view from the rooftop was stunning — I was kind of sad we didn't all come up here together the evening before at sunset. It would've been such a romantic spot at dusk. How's this? Pretty amazing, right? The ocean is right there, visible immediately. ## What was disappointing at Yeongjin-gil 51, and the verdict So... when it was time to leave, I realized we barely had any photos of our little dog; dog owners really should take more photos. I scrambled to get a few shots of Choco. Choco really loved this place, 'Yeongjin-gil 51' — I think dogs especially love it because of how big the yard is. Honestly, from booking through check-in, there were a few things that felt a bit lacking — like the cleaning running late, or communication with the host not being that smooth. (Owner, why are you so busy...) But after resting properly for our one night in Gangneung at 'Yeongjin-gil 51,' I feel like we came away filled with nothing but happy energy. Only good memories left from this trip. Most of all, my parents really loved it, which made me even happier. 'Yeongjin-gil 51' is a stay that everyone — young, old, and dogs included — will enjoy. Whether it's a group trip or a family trip, I highly recommend 'Yeongjin-gil 51'!
