Fresh off the press: today's dining review. Lotte Department Store Dongtan in Osan-dong is basically the best playground for a grown-up like me. There are things I never normally see, a movie theater, and it's the perfect spot to window-shop and lift my mood — whenever I'm feeling down, I go there to soak up the department store's lively energy (call it good vibes, haha). Today I bought a few books at Youngpoong Bookstore in Lotte Dept. Store Dongtan and got hungry, so I decided to have lunch here.

## Where is Baekok Dongtan? B1 food court of Lotte Department Store Dongtan

This time I went to Baekok Dongtan, one of the good lunch spots at Lotte Department Store Dongtan. It's located in the basement 1 food court, which doesn't feel awkward for solo dining, and I heard the gomtang (Korean beef bone soup) here is really rich and delicious, so I decided to try a solo gomtang lunch today.

On the TV screen set up in the restaurant, there was actor Go Kyung-pyo, famous for eating deliciously — tada! Watching him eat so appetizingly made me want to order right away.

## Baekok Dongtan menu and the price of the herbal gomtang set

Here's the menu at Baekok, a great lunch spot in Dongtan. Their main dish is gomtang, divided into pork gomtang, spicy gomtang, and herbal gomtang. Since I wanted to try a variety, I ordered the herbal gomtang set (herbal gomtang + cabbage dumplings + drink), which comes with herbal gomtang and cabbage dumplings.

For reference, all of Baekok's gomtang menu items are available for takeout. I was out shopping at the department store and visited during lunchtime, so I just ate at the restaurant.

## Solo dining at the bar table: no awkwardness in the food court

I waited and quickly grabbed a bar table seat as soon as one opened up. The advantage of the basement 1 food court at Lotte Department Store Dongtan is that no one bats an eye at solo diners!

When the order buzzer rings, you head straight to the counter to pick up your food.

My order: the herbal gomtang set (herbal gomtang + cabbage dumplings + drink) for ₩21,000. Alright, let's take a look at each item in the set one by one, shall we?

## How does the herbal gomtang broth with neungi mushrooms and milkvetch root taste?

First up is the herbal gomtang, with a broth that looks impressively rich just from the sight of it.

Whenever I eat soup-based dishes, I always slurp the broth first, and this time I could really strongly taste the aroma of neungi mushrooms. Have you heard the saying '1 shiitake, 2 neungi, 3 song-i'? That's how precious and healthy neungi mushrooms are considered to be, and the herbal gomtang broth simmered with neungi mushrooms and milkvetch root was truly rich and delicious — I was genuinely impressed.

The generous meat and rice went down just as smoothly, slurp slurp! I'm normally not the type to mix rice into soup — I like eating rice separately, gomtang-style — but the rich broth at Baekok was impossible to resist, so I kept spooning it in nonstop.

I hadn't even had a drink the night before, but I was making sounds like a guy nursing a hangover, going 'ahh~' between bites, haha.

## Baekok's cabbage dumplings, wrapped in cabbage instead of dumpling skin

Next up, the cabbage dumplings I ordered out of curiosity. Regular dumpling wrappers are made of flour, but these use cabbage instead — they're also sold as a standalone item, but I was curious so I deliberately ordered the set with my herbal gomtang to try them.

I picked one up, dipped it in soy sauce, and it really disappeared in one bite — I didn't even get to photograph the cross-section, haha. But the filling inside the cabbage wrapper had plenty of meat along with the kimchi, so it felt healthier and just as tasty as regular flour-wrapped dumplings — very satisfying. And since the wrapper is made of thin cabbage, imagine how packed the filling inside must be! I thought this would be perfect for people who don't digest flour well or who worry about diabetes — making dumplings at home with cabbage instead of wrappers like this.

## Worth it as a refuelling meal during a department store shopping trip

Proof that I finished every last drop of broth and grain of rice. It was so delicious I immediately took a thumbs-up victory photo, haha ^^)b. It's rare for me to finish a meal completely like this when eating out, but after having such a rich bowl of herbal gomtang, I feel proud, like I really nourished my body. In summer, during the hottest days, people usually eat samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), but now I think ordering herbal gomtang at Baekok in Lotte Department Store Dongtan could work just as well.

Shopping at Lotte Department Store Dongtan really drains your energy fast, so if you want a hearty meal to refuel, I recommend Baekok, the gomtang specialty restaurant in the basement 1 food court. I had the herbal gomtang with neungi mushroom broth, but you can also choose the milky-white regular gomtang or the spicy gomtang depending on your taste ^^
