## Why we chose Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap for dinner after the Paju outlets

After shopping all day at the Paju outlet, we were starving and looking for a good place nearby. We'd eaten a light bread lunch while shopping, so for dinner we wanted a proper, filling home-style meal. Near the Paju outlet there's a Simhaksan restaurant strip where good places are clustered together, and today's pick was Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap!

## What the restaurant is like at the early dinner hour

We went in at a slightly early dinner hour and there were already a few tables occupied. The spacing between tables was generous, making for a comfortable atmosphere for a meal. Inside, it's a cozy, clean space with wood-toned tables. I'd call it a Korean ssambap restaurant where you can have a home-style meal with neat side dishes.

## Deuljeongsik 20,000 won vs. kkotjeongsik 26,000 won: what each set includes

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap has two signature set menus!

The deuljeongsik set comes with stir-fried pork (jeyuk-bokkeum), stir-fried squid, doenjang (soybean paste) stew, gangdoenjang (thick seasoned soybean paste), and stone-pot rice, and the kkotjeongsik set adds grilled fish (Atka mackerel or mackerel).

## Side dishes at Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap, starting with pumpkin porridge

Pumpkin porridge came out first, and shortly after the basic side dishes started arriving one by one. The warm, soft pumpkin porridge was great for taking the edge off our hunger before the meal.

With various namul (seasoned vegetables) and side dishes, salad, and fresh wrap greens all laid out, the table looked filling just to look at.

## The self-serve bar: 8 kinds of wrap greens, napa cabbage included

The wrap greens in particular can be freely taken from a self-serve bar in whatever type you like. I loved the system of choosing from 8 kinds of wrap greens to your taste — lettuce, perilla leaves, kale, chicory, and more. It was even better because they had alba chu (young napa cabbage), one of my favorites.

## The hot stone plate, half stir-fried pork and half stir-fried squid

The main dishes, stir-fried pork and stir-fried squid, aren't mixed together — each is stir-fried separately and served half-and-half on a hot plate. The pork had a nice grilled-smoky flavor, and the squid pieces were big with a satisfying chewy texture.

A spoonful of rice on a fresh leaf, a piece of pork or squid on top, a touch of gangdoenjang, and — one bite! This is exactly the taste you come for ssambap. With so many kinds of wrap greens and two main dishes to combine, it was fun trying a different combination each time.

## Stone-pot rice with nurungji and a generous doenjang stew

The rice isn't a regular bowl of rice but stone-pot rice. And of course, us Koreans know that the nurungji (scorched rice) you eat at the end of the meal is the best part. Scoop the rice out first, pour hot water into the pot, and you get warm nurungji tea to finish!

The savory doenjang stew also came in a generous portion, and alternating between it, the pork, the squid, and the wrap greens made for a pretty rich meal.

After the meal, you can help yourself to old-style crackers, coffee, and ice cream for dessert.

It was a filling meal that went from pumpkin porridge, to stone-pot nurungji, to dessert snacks. After being completely drained from walking around the Paju outlet all day, this home-style spread of warm stone-pot rice with meat and vegetables really hit the spot.

By the time we finished eating and stepped outside, it had already started getting dark. A shopping outing, a meal outing — today too, Daisy the frog had a fun, delicious, feel-good outing. 🌼🐸
