## In short

Useum Pangyo Branch is a Korean restaurant and bar a 2-minute walk from Pangyo Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, serving gomtang and eobokjaengban by day and Korean beef suyuk with drinks at night. After a fasting hospital checkup, the writer arrived past 3 p.m. and found the restaurant had no break time, ordering eobokjaengban with a mix of beef shank and brisket and getting a broth refill to finish every last drop. A warm, mild meal here is a solid choice when your mealtime ends up at an awkward hour.

## A late lunch after 3 p.m.

I had a hospital checkup not long ago, so I fasted from early morning and went in. By the time the tests were all done, it was already well past 3 p.m.

I was starving and wanted a hearty lunch right away, but a lot of restaurants near Pangyo Station go into break time around 3 p.m., so finding somewhere for a late lunch wasn't easy.

But Useum Pangyo Branch runs without a break time, so I could eat even in the late afternoon. On a day when I was this hungry, that alone was such a relief.

## 2-minute walk from Pangyo Station, easy parking too

Useum Pangyo Branch is about a 2-minute walk from Pangyo Station, so it was easy to find, and free parking in the building's lot meant driving there was no hassle either. After parking, I headed into the restaurant on the first floor.

During the day you can enjoy meals like gomtang (beef bone soup) or eobokjaengban, and in the evening it turns into a bar-restaurant serving Korean beef suyuk (boiled beef slices) and other Korean dishes with drinks.

I visited around 3 p.m. and expected it to be quiet, but there were more customers than I thought. I even spotted a group that looked like they were on a company dinner from a nearby Pangyo office, so the place had a fairly lively atmosphere.

## The eobokjaengban spread and three sauces

The moment I sat down, I was so hungry I immediately ordered the eobokjaengban I had picked out ahead of time. Soon after, it arrived, looking hearty from the first glance, along with neat side dishes.

The staff kindly explained that the meat comes already cooked, so once the broth starts boiling, you can eat it right away with the vegetables.

There were three sauces prepared — you could mix chojang (vinegared red pepper paste) with perilla powder, or use salt and pepper, or soy sauce, whichever you preferred.

## Tender meat and a mild broth

First I picked up a piece of meat and dipped it into the chojang mixed generously with perilla powder.

The platter had several cuts of boiled beef, including shank and brisket, so the texture changed a bit with each piece. The meat had no gamey smell and was tender, with a clean, mild flavor that came through more the more I chewed.

Personally, the chojang-and-perilla-powder combo was my favorite. The tangy chojang paired with the nutty perilla suited the meat well and brought out more savory depth.

I tried the vegetables piled generously underneath the meat with the soy sauce, and they were mild rather than sharp, which I liked. Since this was my first meal after a long fast that day, I appreciated having something warm and gentle rather than something spicy or intense.

The broth wasn't heavily seasoned either — it was on the mild, understated side. The clean flavor drawn from the meat was the star, so it never felt heavy, and I kept going back for more of the broth as I ate.

Partway through the meal, the staff refilled the broth with more hot stock, so I could enjoy it generously right to the end. In the end, I cleaned up the meat, the vegetables, and even the broth completely.

## From a late lunch to a Pangyo work dinner

What I liked most about Useum Pangyo Branch that day was being able to eat even at a late hour, with no break time getting in the way.

Being close to Pangyo Station with free parking made it easy to visit, and with a hearty lunch menu and evening options of Korean beef suyuk with drinks, it seemed like it would also work well as a spot for a Pangyo work dinner or gathering.

Most of all, I was glad to get a warm, filling meal on a day when my mealtime had ended up at such an awkward hour. Next time, I'd like to try the hot gomtang for lunch, or come back in the evening with my husband for Korean beef suyuk and a drink.
