After running the marathon at Sinjeonggyo Underpass Track Stadium, we wondered what to eat and ended up at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch (오목교곱창 목동본점)!

After sweating it all out, a cold beer and gopchang (grilled beef intestines) turned out to be an even better combination than I expected. This is not just a place with good gopchang either—it is where you can properly try 30 years of garlic gopchang tradition, so I came in excited.

To give you the conclusion first, the handmade garlic gopchang was what I remembered most. Once I tried it, I immediately understood why it is the signature menu. 😋

It is on the first floor at 226-13 Mokdongdong-ro, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. Tucked into an alley, it had an old-school neighborhood feel from the exterior, which I loved. It has a different atmosphere from the spotless, newly decorated restaurants you see everywhere these days.

## Plenty of seating, with lots of daytime-drinks guests

We arrived at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, practically as soon as it opened. We had come straight from the marathon, so honestly, we desperately wanted a cold beer. 😂 We ordered Cass the moment we sat down. There were actually quite a few guests there for daytime drinks, just like us.

There were far more seats inside than I expected. Along with regular tables, there were round tables and sofa seats, so it looked easy enough to find a suitable spot whether you come in a group or as a pair.

After we ordered, complimentary sides including cheonyeop (beef omasum) and sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) arrived. I personally love places where even the side dishes are good, and this place had me happy right from the start.

The sundubu-jjigae was especially nice: a spoonful of broth before the gopchang warmed me right up. The cheonyeop tasted fresh too, and it was perfect with soju or beer while waiting for the gopchang. 🍺

The assorted gopchang is 200g for ₩27,900! It includes handmade garlic gopchang, hwangso gopchang (beef small intestine), makchang (beef abomasum), daechang (beef large intestine), yeomtong (beef heart), and beoljip-yang (honeycomb tripe), so I loved being able to try several cuts at once.

This was also a place where the fun of eating came with the fun of watching! 🔥 The owner grills the gopchang and puts on a little fire show in the middle, with flames shooting up and giving the gopchang a proper smoky aroma.

The moment the flames leapt up right in front of us was quietly entertaining just to watch. 😆 Thanks to that, we ate smoky, delicious gopchang and watched the owner's fire show, so there was never a dull moment during the meal. First-time visitors in particular will probably enjoy watching the grilling process. Being able to enjoy a fire show along with great gopchang is another charm of Omokgyo Gopchang!

## Why the handmade garlic gopchang was my top pick

And the dish that genuinely impressed me most here: the handmade garlic gopchang. It is not a signature item for no reason. Whole cloves of garlic are tucked inside the gopchang, and the garlic turns soft as it grills.

In one bite, the rich fat of the gopchang and the garlic flavor came through together, and the pairing worked far better than I expected. As the garlic melted away, it added to the gopchang's richness, so I kept reaching for more. 😋 Personally, the handmade garlic gopchang was my number-one pick from everything we ate that day! If you love garlic, I really hope you try it at least once.

## Plump daechang with beer

You cannot leave out the daechang either. The pieces were quite plump, looking appetizing even before a bite. One bite of nicely grilled daechang, followed immediately by a sip of cold beer.

What more is there to say? 🍻 Maybe because we had just run a marathon, it tasted even better. The combination of gopchang and beer after breaking a sweat was truly impossible to resist.

You can enjoy the gopchang with the house special sauce or shiitake mushroom wasabi, but its own rich flavor comes through nicely too, so you can mix it up to suit your taste.

It was nicely tangy and spicy, so taking a bite now and then while eating gopchang made my mouth feel completely refreshed. The rich, oily gopchang and the tangy-spicy Golbimyeon went surprisingly well together.

Personally, I recommend ordering Golbimyeon to share in the middle rather than eating only gopchang the whole time. 👍

## Garlic gopchang points worth knowing before you go

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch says it makes its garlic gopchang using a 30-year-old mother's recipe. The garlic used in the dish is six-clove garlic sourced directly from Seosan, and they put one clove inside each piece of gopchang. Maybe that is why it had a slightly different appeal from ordinary garlic gopchang.

They also make their green onion kimchi in-house, and say grilling it with the gopchang brings out another flavor. Personally, I was touched once more by the owner's thoughtfulness at the end. As we paid and left, they even gave us hutgae sticks. 😂 Little services like that make you quietly happy, don't they?

## Overall review

Overall, Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a place worth trying at least once if you love gopchang. More than any of the other cuts, the handmade garlic gopchang was truly delicious to me. The way whole garlic and the rich gopchang fat came together was definitely memorable, and pairing plump daechang with cold beer made it feel like a proper daytime-drinks meal. 🍻

It seems like a good choice if you are looking for a gopchang restaurant near Omokgyo Station, or for a group-dining spot around Mok-dong. On Saturdays, it opens from lunchtime, so I recommend it for anyone who wants gopchang and a drink from midday, like we did! Next time, I definitely want to try the gopchang hot pot or fried rice that we missed this time.
