## In short

Choi Budae Jjigae is a Korean restaurant in Okjeong, Yangju, serving budae-jjigae, budae-bokkeum, kimchi jjigae, and mandu-guk. I added sausage and ham to a two-person budae-jjigae order, refilled the rice and side dishes, and loved that the broth was neither overly salty nor sweet. Verdict: Choi Budae Jjigae is where I’d return when I’m craving extra ham and plenty of rice.

With the sudden big swings between daytime and nighttime temperatures, I thought I needed a piping-hot soup today to keep a cold away, so I came here. This is the place that even beat the famous Dongtan and Uijeongbu budae-jjigae spots.

## Choi Budae Jjigae in Okjeong, Yangju: Visit information

This is Choi Budae Jjigae (최부대찌개), known as a great place to eat in Okjeong, Yangju. It fills up at lunchtime, so you’ll probably have a more comfortable meal if you arrive right when it opens. I avoided peak time, so I could eat in a quiet space.

![Choi Budae Jjigae meal space](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-03-1rgp5-550.webp)

You can park behind the building, although it seemed like most people parked along the curb, so we took an empty spot and went in. The owner always gives such a kind welcome, which puts me in a good mood.

![Choi Budae Jjigae interior space](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-05-1wqul-550.webp)

![Group dining space at Choi Budae Jjigae](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-06-mi8m9-550.webp)

![Interior seating at Choi Budae Jjigae](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-07-g9m4i-550.webp)

The interior is fairly spacious and can accommodate group meals, so lots of groups were visiting. Some people ordered individual dishes too, and surprisingly, quite a few ordered mandu-guk (dumpling soup), which made me curious.

## Ordering budae-jjigae with extra ham

The menu had reasonably priced sets. There was an omelet-roll set for anyone who felt it would be a shame to have only budae-jjigae. The three discounted sets were Bu-jji Mal-i, Bu-bok Mal-i, and Kim-jji Mal-i.

We like ordering individual dishes and adding extras, so we ordered two portions of budae-jjigae (Army Stew) at ₩11,000 each, plus sausage and ham for ₩7,000. They also give you ramyeon noodles through the review event, which I thought was a thoughtful touch.

Some places serve rice as a standard part of the meal, but Choi Budae Jjigae offers unlimited rice, so it was added separately as a service. Better still, the rice was Sindongjin rice, one of my favorite varieties, so I was especially happy to see it.

![Unlimited rice notice](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-11-2bgi7-550.webp)

![Sindongjin rice and the basic table setting](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-12-11jrj-550.webp)

![Stir-fried fish cake and dried shredded radish side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-13-18cgp-550.webp)

The basic side dishes were stir-fried fish cake and dried shredded radish, and you can bring more side dishes from the self-service bar if you need them. By the way, the stir-fried fish cake was so good that I polished off a plate before the food even arrived. I even got a refill... it was delicious, so I highly recommend it.

## How were the broth seasoning and rice refills?

The stew arrives unboiled, so it can take a little time to cook, but it came to a boil faster than I expected and was ready to eat right away. Since we added extras, we let it boil for about five more minutes.

![Budae-jjigae boiling with extra ingredients](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-15-b4b9n-550.webp)

The ham flavor gently spreads through the broth and brings out the savoriness, so I personally recommend adding extras :) There was grilled Spam on the menu, so I figured they must definitely use Spam here—and as soon as I tasted the broth, I knew it was the real deal.

There were thick-cut pieces of tofu and rice cakes in it too, so it would be easy to finish two bowls of rice in no time—you have to pace yourself! My partner usually eats only one bowl, but even they had two here.

Another plus is that you can refill your rice without feeling self-conscious!

![Meal setting with refillable rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-18-mrbgx-550.webp)

We ate nonstop and cleared every last bit. I feel like any cold would have been chased away before it even had a chance to come! I absolutely loved Choi Budae Jjigae because the seasoning was just right—not overly salty or sweet. Next time, I’m going to try it as takeout.

## Plum tea or coffee after your meal

On your way out, you can have plum tea or coffee for dessert, so keep that in mind for a little palate cleanser! The plum tea was nicely sweet and suited my taste, so I drank it in two rounds before leaving, haha.

![Indoor restroom information at Choi Budae Jjigae](https://img.superchart.com/images/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae/okjeong-budaejjigae-ham-sari-choibudaejjigae-21-141ro-550.webp)

The restroom is inside too, which made Choi Budae Jjigae in Okjeong convenient. Since they’re closed on Saturdays, how about Sunday lunch? I’m always wondering what to eat on Sundays, and I think stew or stir-fry would be just right for a family meal.
