## In short

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. We ordered the 32,000 won Daseon Kalnakji for two and two extra portions of boiled pork for 12,000 won after a company dinner, and loved the clam broth, plump octopus, and fresh geotjeori. Verdict: a seriously satisfying stop for lunch or a hangover cure.

After a company dinner the previous day, my wife and I went to Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch (다선칼국수 본점), which is famous for hangover food, while still dealing with a bit of a hangover~ It is already known among Suwon locals as a great kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) spot, and to give you the conclusion first: we found a truly excellent place that we have no choice but to revisit. I could see how it has stayed in the same spot for 25 years.

## How do you get to Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch?

Come out of Exit 8 at Suwon Station and walk straight along Suwon Station Rodeo Street~ You will see Daseon Kalguksu on your right.

As you can see in the photo, the entrance is full of that old-school restaurant charm.

The restaurant has already been featured on the TV program Live Today, and apparently appeared as a representative Suwon dish on Amazing Saturday too~ Every time food comes on that show, I want to eat it, so I was thrilled to find it right by Suwon Station!

Right in front of the entrance, it says “original hangover kalguksu.” A little spoiler: drink heavily the night before and have kalnakji here? Your hangover relief is 100% guaranteed!

As soon as we walked in, the clean, old-school atmosphere stood out, and I loved the thoughtful touch of aprons hanging right by the entrance!

## What did we order: Daseon Kalnakji and boiled pork?

The menu was so varied that I had decision paralysis as soon as we sat down. We ordered the restaurant’s signature “Daseon Kalnakji for two” (thick broth / regular spice) for ₩32,000, plus two portions of “extra set boiled pork” for ₩12,000. But wow, other tables were ordering sooo many dumplings. I am definitely ordering dumplings next time.

## A satisfying spread starting with barley rice and geotjeori

First, every table has pepper and gochujang (Korean red chili paste, for the barley rice), which was convenient since we did not need to ask for them one by one~

Musaengchae (seasoned shredded radish) and geotjeori (fresh kimchi) arrived first as side dishes~ Honestly, you cannot leave geotjeori out when you are having kalguksu. One bite was savory, a little spicy, and fresh(?)—it tasted like the just-made kimchi I used to sneak while my family made kimjang, or winter kimchi. It could not possibly pair badly with kalguksu,,

They also served barley rice with musaengchae. Maybe because they added plenty of sesame oil, it was so nutty, and after mixing in a little gochujang, I finished it in no time. The fresh(?) musaengchae and gochujang went so well together that I almost wanted to order a whole bowl of just that.

The boiled pork was cooked beautifully and had a lovely springy texture. It came with saeujeot (salted fermented shrimp), but I tried it without sauce and there was absolutely none of that porky smell. The lean-to-fat ratio was perfect, and it melted softly in my mouth.

## Daseon Kalnakji loaded with clams and octopus

Then the long-awaited Daseon Kalnakji for two arrived. Can you see the size?? I honestly thought, can value get any better than this? It was so generously served that it felt like a meal for three rather than two~ The clams made the broth spicy and refreshing at once, the kind of flavor that could not help but wipe out a hangover.

The real kick was the octopus. The plump pieces came cut into easy bite-sized pieces, so when I piled octopus onto the noodles and slurped them up, my mouth was completely filled with texture. It was impossible to describe!

This is the spread with kalnakji for two, the basic boiled pork, and all the side dishes. Even just from the photo, can you feel that foundational, old-school restaurant food vibe? It had such a strong Korean soul-food feeling, and there was simply no way it could taste bad.

The geotjeori was also crisp, sweet, and savory as though it had just been made, so it went incredibly well with the kalguksu. I always put kimchi on top when eating the noodles.

## How was it for Suwon Station lunch and hangover food?

We visited at lunchtime, and lots of people came even on a weekday, so I felt certain this is a Suwon lunch spot worth knowing. It was also absolutely perfect for a hangover. And,, when I come again, I think I will choose one of the full set meals! The sign welcoming daytime drinking gets my approval!
