On the way home from work or during a slow evening, sometimes you just want good food with a light drink to close out the day. But a loud, packed bar felt like it would be more tiring than relaxing, so this time I looked for a place with a calm mood that could still serve a proper meal. Searching around Sookmyung Station, I found B421, which is also close to the War Memorial of Korea. Since it's a spot where you can have dinner and then take a slow walk nearby, I figured I could combine a meal and a stroll in one trip, so I went.

B421 is close to Exit 6 of Sookmyung Women's University Station, so it wasn't hard to find. Walking a bit into the alley from the station, the storefront appears, and being slightly off the busy main street, the atmosphere already felt quite calm from the entrance. From outside I assumed it would be a cozy, small space, but once I opened the door and stepped in, I was a little surprised at how spacious the interior actually was.

Inside, the tables had generous spacing, so sitting down didn't feel cramped at all. The lighting wasn't too bright, more on the soft side, which made it nice for talking over dinner in the evening. The tables themselves were roomy enough that ordering several dishes at once was never a space problem. Even during a busy time slot, the tables and interior were kept clean and tidy, giving an overall pleasant impression.

Looking at the menu, this wasn't just a place for drinking snacks — there were several proper dishes you could eat as a full meal, like pasta. ### Mushroom cream pasta at B421

The mushroom cream pasta came out first. The warm cream sauce was loaded with mushrooms, and the sauce wasn't too watery — more of a thick style that coated the noodles well. The mushrooms had a chewy bite, and the cream sauce had a nutty, savory flavor. I'd ordered it thinking of it as a side for drinks, but it turned out to work surprisingly well as an actual meal, filling me up nicely.

### Gambas al ajillo

The gambas al ajillo had a subtle garlic aroma rising from the oil base. The shrimp were cooked to a nice golden color, and warm bread came alongside it — dipping the bread in the oil brought out the nutty flavor even more. Shrimp, garlic, and olive oil is a familiar combination, but it's still hard to go wrong with it. Eating it alongside the pasta, the soft creaminess and the garlicky punch kept alternating, and I was glad we'd ordered a variety of dishes.

Personally, the most interesting dish was the naya napa cabbage. Instead of serving it plain like a salad, they lightly seared the outside until golden and served it with a sauce. The seared cabbage had a subtle sweetness with a crisp texture still intact, and it tasted better than I expected.

After a while of eating rich dishes like the pasta and gambas, things can start to feel a little heavy, but eating the cabbage alongside them felt like a palate reset. There wasn't anything particularly bold about the ingredients, but the seared aroma, the cabbage's sweetness, and the sauce worked so well together that I kept reaching for more. If you like napa cabbage, it's worth ordering at least once.

Eating the three dishes together made for a good combination of food and drink. The pasta filled us up, the gambas came with bread and shrimp to snack on, and the cabbage kept things from getting one-note in the middle. The seasoning wasn't overly strong either, so it went down easily alongside drinks.

The overall mood matched the food well. Rather than a loud drinking spot, it felt like the kind of place for chatting slowly over a meal — good for catching up with a friend you haven't seen in a while, or grabbing a drink with coworkers after work. The wide table spacing also meant less of that cramped feeling of overhearing the conversation at the next table.

That said, if you're driving, parking can be a bit of a hassle. There's no dedicated lot for the restaurant, so you'll need to use a nearby paid parking area. Given how close it is to Sookmyung Station, I personally found taking public transit far more convenient.

Also, weeknight evenings can get busy with office workers and group gatherings, so if you want a quieter atmosphere, it might be worth avoiding peak hours.

## A walk to the War Memorial of Korea after dinner

After finishing the meal, I took a slow walk toward the War Memorial of Korea nearby, and this little route ended up being nicer than I expected. Instead of heading straight home after a good meal, getting some evening air and walking a bit helped shake off the fatigue from sitting all day. If you're making dinner plans near Sookmyung Station and don't want the night to end right after eating, extending it into a walk like this is a good option.

## Is B421 worth a visit?

Overall, B421 felt less like a place purely for drinking and more like a spot centered on food, where you share a few dishes with a light drink on the side. There were filling options like the mushroom cream pasta, and good drinking companions like the gambas or the naya napa cabbage, which made mixing and matching dishes fun. Above all, the interior was more spacious than expected and the tables had plenty of room, which made it comfortable to sit and talk for a long evening.

If you're near Sookmyung Station and want to avoid an overly loud bar, but also don't want a place with a weak food menu, somewhere like B421 that lets you enjoy both food and drink together is a solid option. I ended my evening by walking toward the War Memorial after eating, and that flow of a meal followed by a light stroll was something I especially liked about this place.

My friend had a 19% ABV wine that evening, and despite the higher alcohol content, she said it tasted good and drank it happily. It paired well with the food too, going nicely with dishes like the pasta and gambas, and seeing her enjoy the wine so much made me think this is a place good for enjoying both the food and the drinks.
