## In short

Deli India is an Indian restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, about a five-minute walk from Sangsu Station. I compared vegetable, butter chicken, and shrimp curries with naan and rice; Deli India is a comfortable pick for sharing a curry trio.

## When You’re Craving Curry and Naan Near Sangsu Station

I was looking for somewhere to eat around Sangsu and, craving Indian curry for the first time in a while, visited Deli India. It is about a five-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sangsu Station, so it was not difficult to find. Since it is in the neighborhood between Hongdae and Hapjeong, there is plenty to look around at nearby, and it is also well located for wandering through the little streets before or after a meal.

There are times when I suddenly crave Indian food, but when I actually decide to have it, choosing where to go can feel a little tricky. That day, I chose Deli India while looking near Sangsu Station for a place where I could have proper curry and naan without the meal feeling too heavy. I usually like curry anyway, so I ordered a selection that would let me try several kinds together.

## Three Curries in a Calm Dining Room

As soon as I went inside, I could smell the spices gently in the air. They were not so strong as to feel overwhelming, though, and the overall atmosphere was clean and calm. You might picture flashy decor or a strongly local feel when you think of an Indian restaurant, but this place was more relaxed than I expected, making it nice for chatting over a meal.

We ordered vegetable curry, butter chicken curry, and shrimp curry, along with naan and rice. Having several curries on the table at once was fun because each one tasted a little different, so we could alternate between them. I think I would have been disappointed with just one dish, so I was glad we ordered several kinds together.

## How the Naan Paired with the Curries

First, the naan came out warm, so I tore it apart right away and dipped it into the curry. I loved the nutty aroma of freshly baked naan, and it was not too tough but pleasantly chewy, which went well with the curries. Mixing curry into rice is delicious too, but dipping naan gives it a different feel, and personally I preferred this combination.

### Mild, Gently Sweet Butter Chicken Curry

The butter chicken curry tasted mild and gently sweet first. Rather than having spices hit hard up front, it was smooth overall, making it great for dipping generously with naan. Once I started tearing off little pieces of naan and topping them with curry, I kept reaching for more.

### Different Textures in the Shrimp and Vegetable Curries

The shrimp curry definitely had a different texture from the other curries, perhaps because of the shrimp. The shrimp had a nice springy bite that worked with the curry’s smooth flavor, so it was good to come back to in between bites. Of all the curries, I reached for it quite often because the shrimp was fun to chew.

The vegetable curry felt comparatively lighter because it included vegetables. It still had that characteristic curry aroma, but the flavor of the vegetables came through too, so it was also nice with rice. Alternating between the mild, gently sweet butter chicken curry, the shrimp curry, and the vegetable curry made the meal feel more substantial than I expected.

Overall, the curries were not intensely strong in flavor. You could taste the spice character typical of Indian food, but it was not overwhelmingly bold, so I thought it would be fine to visit with someone trying Indian food for the first time. Since I already like curry, I found it pleasantly and reliably tasty.

The food also came out faster than I expected. I arrived hungry, so it was nice to start eating without a long wait. We ordered several dishes, and watching the table fill up as they arrived one by one was quite satisfying. With the warm naan laid out too, it felt like a properly set meal.

## An Easy Spot to Reach by Public Transit

Prices varied a little by menu, but they did not feel especially burdensome. We ordered several things to share, and considering the cost of eating around Sangsu or Hongdae, I felt it was reasonable. If you especially like curry and naan, I think it would be nice to visit once and share a variety of dishes.

That said, because it is in one of Sangsu’s side streets, getting around by public transit is much more convenient than driving. It is close to Sangsu Station, so it is not hard to reach without a car, and it is also in a good spot for looking around the neighborhood after your meal.

There are so many different restaurants these days, but sometimes you just want to properly enjoy curry and naan, right? I visited that day because I had been craving Indian food for the first time in a while, and the meal was more relaxed than I expected. Comparing several types of curry together was especially more fun than having just one.

It was a nice place to stop by when you are looking for somewhere to eat around Sangsu or Hongdae and want something a little different from your usual choice. If I visit again, I would like to order another curry I did not have this time and eat it with naan.
