## In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu (fried beef cutlet) restaurant on the B1 floor of the Obelisk shopping complex between Mapo Station and Gongdeok Station in Seoul. Three diners ordered two smoked gyukatsu sets and one yakiniku set at 22,000 won each, 66,000 won in total, grilled the beef themselves on mini tabletop braziers, and received free shrimp tempura through the receipt review event plus butter through the Kakao receipt event. With four ochazuke broths and unlimited kettle rice refills, Gyudo is an easy Mapo Station pick for a group meal that ends with scorched rice.

This is a review after paying and ordering extra menu items myself.

It's Japanese food, but Gyudo is a Mapo gyukatsu spot that's great to stop by whenever you crave it.

It comes out tasty and generous, and it's a Mapo, Seoul restaurant you can reach from both Gongdeok Station and Mapo Station.

The atmosphere is great and the food is neat — this is a Japanese cuisine specialty restaurant, right here.

## Inside Gyudo: group tables and solo counter seats

Inside Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch there's a Japanese gray fox, symbolizing abundance and farming in Japan. There are also lots of jars that give off a rustic, pastoral feel.

The space is spacious, so it's great for groups too.

You can also eat solo at the counter (dachi) seats.

Since it's grilled food, your clothes might pick up the smell, so there's a separate place to store them.

## The self-bar: 4 broths and unlimited kettle rice

Gyudo's ochazuke (broth-over-rice) broths come in four kinds — Solomon's seal tea broth, green tea broth, bonito broth, and tonkotsu broth — and there's also free pot rice refills. The broths are all well explained too.

The Solomon's seal tea has a nutty, clean scorched-rice flavor, and the bonito broth has umami and deep ocean flavor.

There's also the tonkotsu broth, simmered from pork bones, rich in deep meaty aroma and umami.

If you love rice, you can eat as much pot rice as you want.

Rice and soup are both unlimited refill, so you can eat freely.

## Gyudo's menu and the limited-quantity tenderloin gyukatsu

The menu is as thick as a magic book. There's also a limited-edition tenderloin (hire ansim) gyukatsu on the menu — a limited item.

It's good even as a set, and there's also gamtae myeongran (seaweed with pollock roe) and drinks. You can add extra meat too.

How to eat it is well explained too.

## What 3 people ordered for 66,000 won

We ordered smoked gyukatsu ₩22,000 ×2 and yakiniku set ₩22,000, totaling ₩66,000 for 3 people. Since there were three of us, we ordered extra to eat.

Inside the drawer were spoons, napkins, wet wipes, a ladle, chopsticks, and even flakes. Each table has its own mini brazier installed. This is where you grill the gyukatsu meat, and they gave us two since it's meant for two people to use.

## Free shrimp tempura for a receipt review, butter from Kakao

Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch gives out delicious shrimp tempura for a receipt review event. Just so you know ahead of time — they bring receipts matched to the number of members. Each person writes a Naver receipt review. Once the food comes out, take a photo and post it, and you've got a nice Naver receipt review done. Do the Kakao receipt event too and you get butter as a free extra.

The gyukatsu and yakiniku came out generous and appetizing.

Eating it with the variety of side dishes made it feel even more upscale. Just press the bell for anything you need.

The thin, reddish yakiniku was cooked soft and tender — really nice.

Eating it with mu-saengchae (radish salad) helped digestion and felt healthier. We ate slowly along with the brown sauce, poached egg, salt, cabbage, and mu-saengchae side dishes.

## How to make nurungbap (scorched rice) and tonkotsu ochazuke

First, put rice in a bowl. Pour in water to make nurungbap. This time we self-served and brought over tonkotsu broth in a small kettle. You bring green tea broth too and pour according to taste.

We poured the water in and closed the lid. Honestly I wanted more miso soup, but the nurungbap was so good I didn't need to get more.

## Grilling the gyukatsu yourself on a mini brazier

Lifting up a piece at a time, we finally started grilling! On the round mini stone plate, the meat surface quickly turns golden brown and crispy.

We grilled the gyukatsu set together too. Since I love gyukatsu so much, the gyukatsu set is a must-try.

This restaurant near Mapo Station serves generous portions too. The delicious smell wafting around is amazing.

Grill it until the reddish parts turn a nice brown color, then eat.

The smoked gyukatsu set uses striploin aged 20 hours, fried and then finished with an offset smoker.

As the smoked signature dish that gave birth to 'Gyudo,' the flavor is really special.

![Gyukatsu dipped in brown sauce and salt](https://img.superchart.com/images/mapo-gyukatsu-three-people-gyudo/mapo-gyukatsu-three-people-gyudo-23-1ow7h-900.webp)

Of course you have to dip it in the brown sauce and salt too.

Eating it with fresh wasabi cuts the richness completely, and the flavor blending with the sauce is delightful in your mouth.

## Poached egg rice and butter bibimbap at Gyudo

The poached egg was so good too. Mixed into rice, it becomes a delicious egg rice, giving a healthy, filling meal along with the good rice.

Adding butter made it softer and richer, with a nutty, delicious butter bibimbap.

![Butter-mixed pot rice and shrimp tempura](https://img.superchart.com/images/mapo-gyukatsu-three-people-gyudo/mapo-gyukatsu-three-people-gyudo-24-smsls-900.webp)

The shrimp tempura was really delicious too. Paired with tartar sauce, the shrimp tempura felt generous and upscale.

These are toppings meant to be eaten ochazuke-style. It's a simple way to enjoy the ochazuke I used to eat often in Japan.

Finishing with nurungbap from the pot rice left me really full.

## Is Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok worth it for a group of 3?

Gyudo, so close to Mapo Station, is a great spot to meet up with special gyukatsu and delicious Japanese food — a Mapo Station restaurant. It's done neatly and well, so if you're nearby, I'd recommend stopping by.
