## In short

Madam Hao is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant near Ajou University and Ajou University Hospital in Suwon. Stopping in for lunch after a hospital appointment, the writer ordered bun cha (grilled pork noodles) for ₩13,000 and banh khot (mini rice pancakes) for ₩12,000, served with Vietnamese mint instead of cilantro and a well-balanced charcoal-grilled pork and nuoc mam sauce. Open until 3am, it works just as well for late-night meals or drinks as it does for lunch.

Madam Hao is close enough to walk from Ajou University Hospital in just a few minutes. It's apparently a newly opened Vietnamese restaurant near Ajou. The wood-toned sign paired with lush greenery caught my eye, and the exotic, Hanoi-like mood made me feel like I'd stepped into a little Vietnam tucked into a side street.

### Where do you park?

There's parking for about 3–4 cars right beside Madam Hao. If it's full, I'd recommend the nearby public lot — Uman-dong public parking lot is a 3-minute walk away and offers 1 hour free.

Since Madam Hao stays open until 3am, it's great not just for lunch but for a late meal, or even as a spot near Ajou to grab a drink at night.

## Interior mood and seating

![Madam Hao's interior with generous seating](https://img.superchart.com/images/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot-07-1kol7-900.webp)

![Spacious, comfortable interior view of Madam Hao](https://img.superchart.com/images/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot-09-1pucb-900.webp)

Inside, the seating was generous, with wide tables and chairs that made it comfortable. The space felt more spacious than I expected — good for a lunch group, a family meal, or a coworker lunch near Ajou. With a university and hospital nearby, it also seemed like a solid choice for student club gatherings, late-night meals for hospital staff, or drinks after a work dinner near Ajou.

The interior also leaned into a Vietnamese local feel, warmly done up. Cozy rattan lighting paired with wooden tables created a space that was both comfortable and atmospheric.

Each table came neatly set with pickled garlic, chili sauce, and hoisin sauce. I didn't order pho that day, but apparently adding the pickled garlic to pho broth makes it even more refreshing. Being able to adjust the sauces to your own taste seemed like a nice touch.

As a starter, Madam Hao serves crispy shrimp chips. They're also running an event where you get two cha gio (fried spring rolls) for writing a Naver receipt review — worth joining in on.

## Menu and ordering

Ordering was easy through the tablet kiosk installed at each table. Some of the Vietnamese dishes were a bit unfamiliar, but every menu item came with a photo, which made choosing simple. I ordered the restaurant's signature bun cha along with banh khot as a side. It felt like a clean, well-put-together spread that would also suit a date near Ajou.

- Banh khot ₩12,000

### How to eat it — a helpful guide

![Guide showing how to eat bun cha and banh khot](https://img.superchart.com/images/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot-16-10s5z-900.webp)

Off to one side of the table was a guide on how to enjoy dishes that might be unfamiliar, like bun cha, cha ca la vong, and banh khot — a nice touch that let first-timers dig in without hesitation. Reading through the recommended way to eat made the meal more fun, and that kind of thoughtfulness was a small delight.

## Bun cha tasting notes

![Bun cha served in bamboo rattan dishware](https://img.superchart.com/images/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot-17-i2gzn-m-900.webp)

My bun cha arrived. Served in bamboo rattan dishware, it looked authentically local right from the start.

![A full bun cha set with grilled pork, rice noodles, and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot/aju-hospital-lunch-bun-cha-banh-khot-18-1wpwi-900.webp)

The neat, tidy plating put me in a good mood before I'd even taken a bite. It came with charcoal-grilled pork, soft rice noodles, fresh herbs and vegetables, and nuoc mam sauce. This was my first time really trying authentic bun cha, so I was looking forward to it.

The noodles arrived warm and moist enough to still be steaming.

The open-flame grilled pork carried a subtle smoky note along with a sweet-savory seasoning soaked all the way through. Chewy and nutty, similar to a seared bulgogi or grilled pork ribs, it paired well with the noodles.

Dipping the noodles and pork into the sweet-tangy, umami-rich nuoc mam sauce sent a bright flavor across my palate. I'm usually not big on sour flavors, but the balance here wasn't overdone at all — genuinely delicious. It made me wonder why I hadn't tried this sooner. This is the kind of bun cha near Ajou worth calling a must-try.

The lettuce and herbs were crisp and clearly fresh.

### Vietnamese mint instead of cilantro

Unlike most places, Madam Hao serves Vietnamese mint instead of cilantro — its fragrant, refreshing aroma brightened the dish and stirred up my appetite. If you love cilantro, you can ask for it separately (adding cilantro costs ₩2,000, for reference). The clean scent of Vietnamese mint suited the dish just as well as cilantro would have.

## What is banh khot?

Next up was a dish called banh khot. It's a traditional Vietnamese mini rice pancake, similar to Korean jeon (savory pancakes), and it felt like a unique cross between the charms of a fresh spring roll wrap and banh xeo.

The rice-flour batter was crispy outside and moist inside, topped with shrimp.

I first tried the freshly fried, crispy banh khot dipped lightly in sauce alone — the nutty, savory sauce gave it a flavor that felt like a trip to Vietnam. It's the kind of dish you keep reaching for, and it would make a great light bar snack for a date near Ajou.

Following the guide, I wrapped banh khot with cucumber and vegetables in rice paper and dipped it in sauce. The crisp, slightly crunchy texture of the dry, unmoistened rice paper was a distinctive treat. Since it's made from rice flour rather than wheat, it felt savory and light without any heaviness. One tip I picked up from other reviews: lightly brushing nuoc mam sauce on the rice paper's surface makes it more pliable and easier to wrap — sharing that here too.

I was a little worried whether authentic Vietnamese dishes like bun cha and banh khot — not the Korean-fusion pho or Vietnamese food I was used to — would suit my taste, but that worry turned out to be unfounded. It was genuinely delicious, and a new flavor I'd never tasted before. It made me realize, this is what real Vietnamese food tastes like, and it made me want to actually visit Vietnam. Even without a trip there yet, I feel like I'll come back here whenever I crave authentic Vietnamese flavors. I really enjoyed this meal, and I'd love to come back with a friend next time.

## Final verdict

The space captures the cozy feel of Vietnam while staying spacious and comfortable, making it a great lunch spot near Ajou — and since it runs until dawn, it's just as fitting for evening drinks, work dinners, or group gatherings near Ajou. Clean and stylishly arranged, it also works well as a date spot near Ajou. The staff being locals from Vietnam added to the exotic feel.

Rather than a heavily Koreanized take, this place cleanly preserves the deep flavors of authentic Vietnamese cooking. The freshness of the ingredients came through, and the overall quality of the food was high. Especially strong was the combination of smoky charcoal-grilled pork, bright nuoc mam sauce, and soft noodles — this is a solid pick for bun cha, banh khot, and Vietnamese food near Ajou. If you're in Suwon and want proper, authentic Vietnamese food with a good drink, I'd recommend Madam Hao!!
