## Heuksadang in Heyri, Paju: what time to go on a weekend

Heuksadang is a handmade doughnut café in a standalone building at 37-10 Heyrimaeul-gil. I hadn't been to Heyri Village in a while, but it seemed to be trending again — I was surprised how many people were there. Here's a tip up front: it's much more comfortable if you avoid peak time (lunch hour).

### Where to park at Heuksadang

As you can see in the photo, there's a large parking lot right next to the building. If it's full, you can park at the big lot near the entrance of Heyri Village and walk over — it's not far. When I went a bit past lunchtime, everyone was there after their meal for dessert and the lot was completely full!! So I parked near the entrance and walked in, and honestly it was nice getting to look around ^^

## Heuksadang doughnut menu and what was sold out at 3pm Saturday

Heuksadang's menu includes the crème brûlée doughnut, the Dubai chewy doughnut, the black sesame doughnut, and various bingsu (shaved ice desserts). The crème brûlée doughnut seems to be the must-order item, and the other doughnuts all looked evenly popular. A lot of younger customers ordered the Dubai chewy doughnut, while the adults all seemed to order the black sesame doughnut. Since it's still hot out during the day, a lot of people were ordering the snow-flake bingsu too.

Since everything, from the dough to the cream, is made in-house, the menu isn't unlimited — once something runs out, it's sold out. I went around 3pm on a Saturday, and unfortunately quite a few doughnuts were already sold out. Weekend lunch hours are especially crowded, so going a little earlier means a wider menu selection and an easier time grabbing a table. Still, it looked like the most popular item, the 'crème brûlée doughnut,' got restocked a few more times..! (thankfully)

As a former Dubai-chewy-doughnut fanatic, I really wanted to try it, but... my boyfriend said the trend was over, so I gave up. But I'd like to try it next time lol (feat. behind the trend). Because I feel like the sweetness the chocolate doughnut didn't quite satisfy could be filled by the Dubai chewy one....hahaha

## Inside Heuksadang and the dog-friendly first floor

Heuksadang has two floors, and I loved the open interior with its high ceilings. Honestly, one reason to head out of the city is to shake off that stuffy, boxed-in feeling, so this felt like a really important part of the experience.

The really great thing is that there's a dog-friendly zone on the first floor! Of course, customers without dogs can use it too, but having a designated area like this makes it easier to feel at ease visiting with your dog.

When you go up to the second floor, Heuksadang's mascot (?), a black snake, greets you. Apparently the café's name comes from the idea that even a black snake becomes gentle when it tastes something sweet.

The second floor seating has an open feel thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the tables aren't packed too close together, so it was easy to talk. There are also group tables, so it's a good spot even if a whole family comes together.

### How the crème brûlée doughnut tastes

(For reference) Crème brûlée is a French dessert made by sprinkling a thin layer of sugar over vanilla custard cream and caramelizing it with a torch. This doughnut applies the same idea, with the sugar sprinkled on the outside of the doughnut and caramelized with fire. Simply put, it's like being coated in a thin layer of dalgona (Korean honeycomb candy).

Inside there's custard cream, but there's less of it than you'd expect — I almost felt disappointed? But since the caramelized sugar shell outside is plenty sweet on its own, if there were too much custard cream it would end up sweet-sweet-sweet overload, so having a moderate amount of cream actually balanced things out well.

The caramelized part made from melted sugar is this crispy. It's so good bite after crispy bite!! Just like how the crispiness of the kadayif was the key point when Dubai chewy cookies were trending, the crispiness is totally the killer feature of the crème brûlée doughnut too 👍

### Why the chocolate crumble doughnut disappointed

The chocolate crumble doughnut wasn't too sweet, which was nice because you don't get sick of it. But if you're expecting intense chocolate sweetness and a fudgy texture, you might be disappointed. If you want that full-on sugary sweetness, the Dubai chewy doughnut is probably the better choice.
