## In short

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a pie-focused dessert shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju that bakes its apple pies and red bean pies on site. Arriving around 4pm meant taking the last freshly baked tray, so the order became the premium 6-pie box at 27,000 won (5 Gyeongju Tokyo Pies plus 1 Tokyo red bean pie), and a sold-out notice went up right after the purchase. With long apple slices instead of apple jam, crisp pastry and a clear butter flavour, Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is worth timing to the bake schedule.

## Where is Gyeongju Tokyo Pie?

The hanok-style ornament above the shop catches your eye as you walk by — it's a dessert shop that specializes in baking pies. Best of all was the nutty aroma of butter and pastry drifting out from the baking area.

## Arriving at 4pm: the last freshly baked pies

We showed up at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie around 4pm, and it turned out to be really cutting it close. The last freshly baked tray came out just in time, and right after we bought ours, a sold-out sign went up.

![Sales counter at Gyeongju Tokyo Pie with a sold-out sign for chocolate pie](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set-05-y97hk-752.webp)

If you're visiting later in the afternoon, it's worth checking whether the flavor you want is still around. That day the chocolate pie our kid had been hoping to try was already sold out. Sniff sniff ㅜ.ㅠ

## Gyeongju Tokyo Pie menu and gift set prices

As of our visit, the main menu was: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie ₩4,500, Tokyo red bean pie ₩4,500, Tokyo chocolate pie ₩4,500.

The Gyeongju Tokyo Pie gift set was ₩26,500 for 6 pieces and ₩39,900 for 9. The premium gift set was ₩27,000 for 6 and ₩40,500 for 9.

Since we wanted a snack for the trip and to bring the rest home, we went with the 6-piece set (₩27,000). We'd originally hoped to try apple, red bean, and chocolate in equal measure, but with chocolate sold out we ended up with 5 Gyeongju Tokyo Pie plus 1 Tokyo red bean pie for a total of 6.

## How the apple pie tastes: long apple slices, not apple jam

![Freshly baked apple pie from Gyeongju Tokyo Pie](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set-11-158vs-946.webp)

We started with Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's signature apple pie.

![Cross-section of the Gyeongju Tokyo Pie apple pie cut in half](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set-12-lxa2j-1200.webp)
*@Gyeongju Tokyo Pie*

Cut in half, it looks different right away from the apple-jam-filled pies you usually picture. Inside the thin, crisp pastry are long slices of actual apple.

![Long apple slices visible inside the pie](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set-13-1nn2m-694.webp)

On the first bite the outer pastry shatters crisply. Then comes the softened apple — rather than the sticky, clingy sweetness of jam, there's a gentle sweetness coming from the apple itself.

![A bite taken out of the crisp apple pie pastry](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set/gyeongju-tokyo-pie-last-tray-premium-set-14-14btz-696.webp)

Add the nutty flavor of real butter, and the distinction between the apple and the pastry stayed quite clear. It felt less like a pie you eat for jammy sweetness and more one you eat for the apple's texture and the butter's flavor.

Best of all, since it was fresh out of the oven, the outside was crisp and the inside still warm.

### Does the pie work with an Americano?

Pastry like this really does go well with a cold Americano. Take a bite of pie, then a sip of coffee, and the buttery richness lingering in your mouth clears, letting the gentle sweetness of the apple come back through. It felt less like pairing coffee with a heavily sweet dessert and more like enjoying crisp pastry, apple, butter, and coffee all together.

### What is the Tokyo red bean pie like?

The Tokyo red bean pie was a different experience from the apple pie. The domestic red bean paste, not too sweet, had that characteristic nutty, hearty flavor in good balance — personally, I thought this one would also pair well with an Americano.

## Is Gyeongju Tokyo Pie worth the visit?

- A good snack to grab one at a time while walking around Hwangnidan-gil
- Apple pie with real apple texture instead of apple jam
- A striking combination of crisp pastry and nutty butter flavor
- Domestic red bean pie that wasn't too sweet, with a nutty depth
- A clean 6-pack box that's easy to carry home after the trip

Maybe because we ate them warm and freshly baked, the crisp, shattering pastry and the soft apple inside were especially memorable. If you're walking Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju looking for a snack to pair with coffee, or a dessert to bring home, why not time your visit to catch the pies while they're warm?
