It's about a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Mapo Station, so accessibility is really great. It's an easy distance to grab dinner after work, making it perfect for office dinners or evening gatherings for anyone working near Mapo Station!!

## The vibe on fireworks festival evening

Walking in, you get a comfortable, homey feel that's a bit different from the sleek Korean BBQ places trending these days. It's table-centered, so it's great for groups too. This happened to be the night of the fireworks festival, and while we were eating, foreign tourists just kept coming in haha!!! Seeing foreigners eating beef with somaek (soju + beer) felt unfamiliar yet fascinating haha

The side dishes come out neatly too. Not many BBQ places serve shredded scallions these days, so it was nice that they had it here haha

## The hwangje galbisal menu lineup

Mapo Mokjang's signature dish is hwangje galbisal (premium beef rib meat). There's 600g, 450g, and 250g options, and you can choose raw or marinated. There's also a set menu that comes with Korean beef yukhoe, so if you want to enjoy both grilled beef and raw beef at once, that's a good pick. For dessert/meal menu there's naengmyeon (cold noodles), a nostalgic lunchbox, steamed egg, and doenjang stew. Since they gave us kimchi stew as a free side when we ordered meat, we didn't even need to order doenjang stew separately.

We ordered the hwangje galbisal raw, 450g. Most people seemed to order it raw!

## The complimentary kimchi stew

The kimchi stew that came as a free side haha It came in a pot bigger than I expected — I was surprised this was really free. It was spicy even for me, but the foreigners at the table next to us were eating it up and loving it haha

## The taste of galbisal grilled over charcoal

Hwangje galbisal is grilled over charcoal, so the savory aroma that rises as soon as the meat hits the grill immediately gets your appetite going. It's a dish that really lets you enjoy the chewy texture of galbisal and the rich flavor of the beef. It tasted best not overcooked on high heat, but cooked just enough to keep the juices in.

Beef really does taste best eaten piece by piece while it's still warm. It's good dipped lightly in salt, and it takes on a different flavor with the sides provided. The flavor of the meat itself is so rich it's perfect as a drinking snack too!! It's also nice that there's a self-serve bar, so you can easily add any side dishes or vegetables you need. Sometimes you run low on the accompanying veggies while eating meat, and it was convenient to be able to grab as much as needed.

I ate some dipped just in salt, and some with the spicy-tangy shredded scallions piled on top haha

### 450g for two was plenty

The portion was surprisingly generous haha If we'd ordered 600g between the two of us, we probably would've been too full and left some.

## What kind of day should you visit Mapo Mokjang?

Overall, Mapo Mokjang felt less like a lavishly decorated upscale beef restaurant and more like a place to enjoy a generous amount of beef in a comfortable atmosphere. It's amazingly accessible from Mapo Station! Another plus is that you can enjoy a variety of dishes alongside the hwangje galbisal centerpiece. If you're looking for a Korean BBQ restaurant near Mapo Station, definitely stop by sometime!! It seems especially good for a day when you want to grab dinner with coworkers after work, or enjoy delicious meat with a glass of soju with friends~!
