It seemed like the restaurant had been made by renovating an old house, so it had that lovely nostalgic feeling. Eating delicious food in such a pretty place put me in a great mood and really made it feel like I was traveling. There were three rooms, with two tables in each. I debated doing it but ultimately didn’t, though I am a little curious about that prize draw haha. There was also a guide explaining how to enjoy Dongyang Baekban. It says their rice is made with Koshihikari rice, making it glossy, pleasantly chewy, and satisfying to bite into. The Sumi potatoes soaked in the dakbokkeumtang broth are said to be even better mixed with rice. The Koshihikari rice was genuinely delicious. I like fluffy, separate grains of rice, and this was exactly my style. There was soy sauce underneath, so mixing it with the egg on top made for such good soy sauce egg rice. The egg had been braised in soy sauce and was soft-set, which was so tasty. It had been a while since I’d had braised beans, so those were especially nice. The sides were bean sprouts, braised beans, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), and pickled vegetables. It looked seriously delicious too. I was debating, but the owner said the glass noodles were the most popular, so that’s what we ordered. There were lots of them, and the noodles soaked up with broth were absolutely delicious. The chicken was boneless, so it was really easy to eat. There was no chicken smell at all, and the meat was tender and delicious. Picking bones out of chicken when eating out can be surprisingly inconvenient and tiring, so I loved how easy the boneless chicken was. They seem to make the dakbokkeumtang seasoning so well! It’s a broth flavor that keeps coming back to mind. The Sumi potatoes practically melted in my mouth. I already love potatoes, but these were even better because they had absorbed that wonderful seasoning. This dakbokkeumtang is a total rice thief. Soy sauce egg rice and dakbokkeumtang are such a good combination. There were lots of other menu items and I had debated what to order, but I think I made an excellent choice! I thought the dakbokkeumtang would fill me up so much that I wouldn’t finish a whole bowl of rice, but the soy sauce egg rice was so good that I polished off a bowl in no time! They also had many other types of rice, including pollack roe rice, caviar rice, and gondre rice, so I really wanted to try them too. If I visit again, I’m going to order a different dish with another kind of rice. I was very satisfied to have such a great lunch as the first meal of the first day of my trip. Food has a big influence on how you judge a trip, and I think this meal made the trip even more satisfying! Beyond the food itself, I also loved Dongyang Baekban’s nostalgic, tranquil feeling. The lovely atmosphere at Dongyang Baekban seems to have the power to elevate the food by another level.
