Taking care of a newborn around the clock left me pretty worn out, body and mind. I just wanted to step outside for a bit and have a proper, delicious meal. Luckily my husband was kind enough to cover for me, so I finally got a rare little outing!! Since it had been so long, I didn't want to just eat anything — I wanted real Korean food, so I headed to a place that's become popular near the Keimyung University main gate in Seongseo: Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch (향택 성서계명대점)!!

Hyangtaek is already a well-known Korean food brand in Daegu, and I'd heard this branch near Keimyung University was a new opening, so I was curious.

## Best time to visit Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung to avoid the lunch wait

At lunchtime the restaurant was packed and there was a wait, which made sense given how popular it's become around Seongseo Keimyung. Haha, it really lives up to the hype. If you want to avoid the lunch wait, I'd suggest going right around opening at 11am, or after 1:30pm once the lunch rush has passed~~

## What is on the menu at Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung

The menu at Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung was simpler than I expected, which actually made it easier to choose. The meal options were mackerel gondre rice, eggplant doenjang rice, yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef tartare bibimbap), chamnamul squid rice bowl, and herring roe bibim noodles, with mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang rice as the signature dishes. There were also side dishes like grilled deodeok and mushrooms, a galbi platter, Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi, and a mushroom platter!

For drinks, there was Hyangtaek sikhye (sweet rice punch), omija tea, and sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch), plus sodas like Coca-Cola, Coke Zero, and Sprite, so you can pick whatever suits your taste with the meal.

They were also running a Naver receipt review event that gives you a free mushroom platter, and I saw a lot of other tables enjoying a plate they'd gotten that way. I've been avoiding greasy food lately, so I skipped it~

## Ordering mackerel gondre rice and yukhoe bibimbap: the doenjang soup passes first

We ordered two of the signature dishes: mackerel gondre rice and yukhoe bibimbap. First off, the doenjang soup (soybean paste soup) that came with it was really tasty. The quality of the doenjang soup matters a surprising amount at a Korean restaurant, and it went really well with the rice. Overall, every dish felt like it had real care put into it??

Since it was so busy at lunch, the food took a little while to come out. But I didn't feel the wait was wasted at all. Each dish looked appetizing just to look at, piled generously with ingredients, so the moment they landed on the table my appetite was already fully triggered?!

Each dish looked great as it arrived, and once I actually tasted them, the flavor was satisfying too, so I ended up eating slowly and properly for once~

### Mackerel gondre rice: add the sauce a little at a time

The mackerel gondre rice paired well-grilled mackerel with gondre (dried thistle) rice, and it was a great combo — it looked healthy at a glance, and the mackerel's clean, savory flavor matched nicely with the fragrant gondre rice. That said, the accompanying sauce is on the salty side, so I'd recommend adding it a little at a time to season to taste rather than dumping it all in at once. I added just the right amount and mixed it in, which let the flavors of the rice and mackerel really shine!

### Yukhoe bibimbap: a full pile of raw beef

The yukhoe bibimbap came piled generously with yukhoe (seasoned raw beef) — so good!!! Just looking at it, the portion of yukhoe was substantial and plenty to go with the rice. Once I added the raw egg and gochujang (chili paste) and mixed it all evenly, it turned into exactly the kind of delicious yukhoe bibimbap you'd hope for. The savory beef combined with the smooth egg yolk made it a dish I kept going back for~

## How to eat at Hyangtaek: wrap the rice in gopchang gim

At Hyangtaek, there's a specific way to eat that's tastier than just mixing your rice. You mix all the ingredients on top of the rice or noodles first, then wrap it with gopchang gim (thick roasted seaweed) and bibim jeotgal (seasoned fermented seafood). Add the house special sauce on top of that, and apparently the same dish takes on a whole new flavor.

Personally, wrapping it in gopchang gim was genuinely delicious. Once I mixed the rice and toppings well and wrapped it in the seaweed, the savory flavor of the gim really brought everything to life. The gopchang gim is refillable if you want more, so if you love seaweed, feel free to load up~~

## The free galbi platter for the first 50 tables each day

And there was one more dish that really made my day! The galbi (short rib) platter — apparently offered free to the first 50 tables each day, and just the look of it was seriously appetizing. It was oddly touching to suddenly be given a whole platter of galbi as a free service. I only had a small bite for health reasons, but it was genuinely delicious! I almost couldn't hold myself back.. haha

The galbi platter went perfectly alongside the meal dishes, and if you've got kids who love galbi, they'd probably love a visit here too!

## A short break from newborn care, and one good meal at Hyangtaek

More than anything, this meal stuck with me because it was such a rare chance to step out, thanks to my husband, while caring for a newborn. Between feeding, watching the baby, and housework every day, it's genuinely hard to even sit down and eat properly — but on this day, I could leave the baby with my husband and eat slowly, catching my breath for a bit. During baby care, these short outings and a good meal really do more for you than you'd expect, haha.

A go-to spot near the Keimyung University main gate — Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch! It's a great place to visit whenever you want delicious Korean food or a hearty, filling meal near Seongseo Keimyung. From satisfying single dishes like mackerel gondre rice and yukhoe bibimbap to sides like the galbi platter, there's plenty to share if you go with a group and order a few things to split~~
