## In short

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a makguksu (cold buckwheat noodle) and sundubu kalguksu restaurant on floors 1 to 3, right in front of Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. On a weekday lunch visit with a friend, there was no wait at all, and the two of them shared one bowl of kelp-and-soy-based water makguksu and one bowl of makguksu dressed in master-made perilla oil. The floor-to-ceiling ocean view and quick service stood out at Gossi's, and the only regret was not adding an order of boiled pork (suyuk).

I went to Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch in Gangmun-dong, Gangneung, with a friend on a weekday lunch.

It's right in front of Gangmun Beach, so the ocean view exceeded expectations, and we ordered both perilla oil makguksu and water makguksu to split between us. There were things I loved and things I found a bit lacking, so here's the honest rundown.

## Where do you park at this Gangneung makguksu restaurant?

![Gangmun Beach public parking lot and the restaurant's exterior](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-01-6pkyo-966.webp)

You can use Gangmun Beach Public Parking Lots 1 & 2 right in front of the restaurant. The first hour is free without any registration, and if you leave before 11am or enter after 6pm, it's also free. Outside those hours, it's ₩600 for the first 30 minutes and ₩300 per 10 minutes after that.

The address is 25 Changhae-ro 350beon-gil, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, and the restaurant occupies the 1st through 3rd floors. It's open 08:30–20:30, with a break time from 15:30–17:00 that's worth avoiding. Last order is at 20:00 and it's open every day of the year, so you don't need to worry about closed days when planning a trip. We went on a weekday lunch and got seated right away with no wait.

## What are the interior and ocean view like in Gangmun-dong?

![Interior with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Gangmun Beach](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-03-1egwd-966.webp)

The restaurant spans three floors and feels quite spacious. Gangmun Beach unfolds right beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, so as soon as we sat down it felt like we could almost hear the waves. The white walls and wooden tables give it a clean overall look, and from a window seat you can see the sand, the breakwater, and even passing boats — I kept glancing out the window while eating.

![Self-serve station with side dishes and utensils](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-05-ya7qe-966.webp)

There's a self-serve station on one side where you grab your own bowls, utensils, and side dishes as needed. Onion pickles, yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), and diced radish kimchi were all set out, and there was even an allergen information sign, which felt like a thoughtful touch.

## Menu, prices and how the two makguksu bowls taste

![Menu board for makguksu and sundubu kalguksu](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-06-164vt-966.webp)

![A bowl of water makguksu with kelp-and-soy-based broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-07-1y33s-966.webp)

First, the water makguksu was notable for using a broth long-steeped from kelp and soy sauce rather than the usual dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth.

One sip of the broth brought out deep savoriness more than saltiness, with a tangy-sweet finish and a hint of red seasoning mixed in for gentle heat. The noodles were chewy without breaking apart, and they went down smoothly, balancing well with the broth.

![Perilla oil makguksu made with master-grade perilla oil](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-08-vihbt-966.webp)

I was looking forward to the perilla oil makguksu, made with domestic organic perilla oil cold-pressed by master producer Kim Yang-hui of Yangyang, and from the first bite the distinctive nutty perilla aroma bloomed and the salty seasoning was spot on.

It was great on its own, but pouring in a little broth and mixing it brought out even more savoriness — between us, we'd recommend that method more. My friend reached for the water makguksu first while I went for the perilla one, but we both cleaned our bowls.

## Honest verdict: what worked and what didn't

On the plus side, the staff were quick and friendly, so seating and ordering flowed smoothly with no wait, and the food came out soon after ordering, which took the pressure off a tight travel schedule. And above all, the ocean view was worth it. It's rare to find a makguksu spot that nails both the food and the view.

![Two bowls of makguksu on a window table with the sea in the background](https://img.superchart.com/images/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu/gangneung-gangmun-beach-perilla-oil-makguksu-09-10km5-1200.webp)

As for the downside, thinking back, it was a bit of a shame we only had makguksu that day. I later found out they also have boiled pork (suyuk) on the menu, so I'll definitely order it next time.

It was a nice light meal for two friends, and with the window seats set up for eating while looking at the sea, it's an easy recommendation for family trips or a date course too.

If you just avoid the break time (15:30–17:00), you can enjoy the place without worrying about a wait, and if you want a window ocean-view seat, weekday lunch is a better bet than peak hours.

- A makguksu spot right in front of Gangmun Beach with low parking hassle thanks to the free first hour at the public lot
- Water makguksu is deep and savory with a kelp-and-soy broth, while the perilla oil makguksu has a strong aroma from master-grade perilla oil
- The ocean view and quick service were great, but not ordering the boiled pork alongside remains a regret
