## In short

Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch is a dakgangjeong (sweet-and-spicy fried chicken) and old-school fried chicken shop inside Amsa Market in Gangdong, Seoul. The takeout order here was one medium dakgangjeong at medium-spicy, one whole bone-in fried chicken, pickled chicken radish and an extra cheese jalapeño sauce, which cut the richness of the fried chicken and worked just as well as a dip for the dakgangjeong. The coating at Gimssi Chicken stayed crisp all the way home, making it a reliable takeout pick.

I went out to Amsa Market wondering what to eat for dinner, and there was a place with a line out the door — I got pulled in before I even realized it. You just can't walk past a place with a line, right? Walking past would honestly be a crime.

As you can see in the photo, there were tons of people — I only photographed the sign to avoid catching other customers, but a bunch of them still ended up in the shot.

## Gimssi Chicken's menu and what this takeout order included

Check the menu board and prices here. My husband wanted the old-school fried chicken, and I wanted dakgangjeong, so we each ordered what we wanted: one medium dakgangjeong at medium-spicy, one whole bone-in fried chicken, chicken radish pickles, plus one extra sauce. Nailed the order, and once we ordered, the owner told us to come back in a few minutes — so we went and grabbed makgeolli (rice wine) in the meantime.

The best thing about Gimssi Chicken Amsa Market Branch was being able to choose drumsticks, wings, and thighs separately. Sometimes you get disappointed by scrawny drumsticks, but Gimssi Chicken's drumsticks are seriously meaty.

![Large drumsticks, 4 pieces for ₩6,000](https://img.superchart.com/images/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong-06-1nfnm-900.webp)

The drumsticks are huge, and 4 pieces are ₩6,000. Four drumsticks plus a can of beer for solo drinking is pure happiness for ₩10,000 — well, actually ₩8,000 worth of happiness. Cheap prices are just part of the market's charm, right?

The old-school fried chicken is amazing too. My husband especially loves it — he'd been asking for it since yesterday, so we finally made it happen today.

Dakgangjeong comes in medium, large, and extra-large — check the box sizes here. Cute detail: the large size sample box is shown puffed up, and they really do pack it that generously.

![Large-size dakgangjeong packed generously for takeout](https://img.superchart.com/images/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong-09-10816-900.webp)

When I went to pick up my order, other customers ordering the large size were getting a truly generous amount packed in.

## How to pick a dakgangjeong spice level: mild, medium-spicy or spicy

True to its reputation as an Amsa Market dakgangjeong favorite, most people were ordering dakgangjeong. Flavors are mild, medium-spicy, and spicy. If you're eating with kids, go mild; if you want a little kick, go medium-spicy (less spicy than Shin Ramyun); and if you want spicy food to blow off stress, go spicy! We ordered medium-spicy.

They weigh it on a scale to make sure it's the right amount — and the portion was seriously huge.

![Dakgangjeong continuously coming out of the fryer](https://img.superchart.com/images/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong-13-6cudi-900.webp)

The dakgangjeong kept coming out of the fryer nonstop — my mouth was watering.

Pro tip from Gimssi Chicken, an Amsa Market dakgangjeong favorite: add the sauce! We ordered bone-in fried chicken with extra sauce, and dipping the dakgangjeong in it was also a real treat.

## Honest review: medium dakgangjeong at medium-spicy

> Honest review of Gimssi Chicken, an Amsa Market dakgangjeong favorite

![Medium dakgangjeong packed so full the lid won't close](https://img.superchart.com/images/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong-15-xmg80-900.webp)

They filled it so full the lid wouldn't close. That kind of generosity is amazing — the kind of generosity you only find at a market.

![Glistening medium-spicy dakgangjeong sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong-16-1lkjf-900.webp)

Isn't that sauce glistening beautifully? They also give you rice cakes with it, and the rice cakes are delicious too.

The dakgangjeong uses a moist cut of chicken rather than a dry one, so it wasn't greasy at all — light and delicious.

## Bone-in fried chicken with cheese jalapeño sauce

> Gimssi Chicken's bone-in fried chicken

A whole fried chicken is hard to finish, so I ordered the bone-in fried chicken instead.

The sauce is cheese jalapeño!

![Fried chicken dipped in cheese jalapeño sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong/amsa-market-bone-fried-chicken-gangjeong-20-1pke4-900.webp)

The nutty, spicy cheese jalapeño sauce cuts through the greasiness of the fried chicken.

The classic way to eat fried chicken — dip it straight in salt, and one bite is just so good. What's great about Gimssi Chicken is that the fry stays crispy even after time passes, so you can eat crispy chicken all the way to the end — I recommend it. Stuck on what to eat for dinner in Amsa-dong? Let Gimssi Chicken solve that problem for you. Places with a line really do have a reason!
