## In short

The Malt Magok is a casual single malt whisky and cocktail bar on the 2nd floor of Hillstate Eco Magok Station, right outside Exit 3 of Magok Station in Gangseo, Seoul. Visiting alone, the writer ordered the one-person fruit and cheese platter with the cocktails Pretty Conti and Love Affair, then compared Edradour 10 Year, Signatory Caol Ila 2013 and Ardbeg Corryvreckan one after another with the owner's guidance. Tasting sherry and peat side by side gave a clear answer: smoky peated whisky is the writer's style.

## Drinking alone and learning whisky at The Malt Magok in Magok

I've had more chances to drink whisky lately, but looking back at what I've tried, it's mostly been familiar, beginner-friendly names like Johnnie Walker, Balvenie, Glenfiddich, and Macallan. So this time I wanted to try a wider range of whiskies and figure out what my own style actually is, which brought me to The Malt Magok, a casual malt bar for single malt whisky and cocktails.

There are plenty of solo-drinking bars in Magok these days built around chatting naturally with the people next to you, but I wasn't really looking for a new-friends kind of vibe — I wanted time to slowly savor a glass and focus on the drink itself. In that sense, if you're looking for somewhere to properly enjoy solo drinking in Magok, The Malt Magok had a clear sense of direction. Sitting alone never felt awkward at all — if anything, it was fun asking the owner question after question about whisky and gradually figuring out what style I liked. A real find of a whisky bar in Magok.

## Where The Malt Magok is: right outside Magok Station Exit 3

The Malt Magok scored points on accessibility right away when I was looking for a bar near Magok Station. It's located in the Hillstate Eco Magok Station officetel building at Exit 3 of Magok Station, in Room 209 right next to NongHyup Bank, so even on my first visit I found it without trouble. Being right in front of Magok Station made it easy to set as a meeting spot, and also easy to swing by casually after work.

![Entrance to The Malt Magok on the 2nd floor of Hillstate Eco Magok Station, Exit 3](https://img.superchart.com/images/the-malt-magok-solo-whisky-tasting/the-malt-magok-solo-whisky-tasting-05-3hobc-966.webp)

![Softly lit tables and group seating at The Malt Magok](https://img.superchart.com/images/the-malt-magok-solo-whisky-tasting/the-malt-magok-solo-whisky-tasting-06-vplic-966.webp)

The space had a completely different mood from a typical noisy bar. Centered around a bar table with 2-person tables and group seating as well, it looked like a place that would work well whether you're going solo for a Magok solo-drinking session, as a couple, or with a small group. The lighting was soft and the whole place felt cozy — good for sitting a long while over whisky. I thought it would suit people looking for a date spot in Magok too. It's a space where couples can talk and slowly work through their glasses, so anyone who dislikes noisy places would probably especially like it.

## About 250 whiskies: asking the owner to match your taste

What impressed me most was the owner's expertise. Rather than just pointing at the menu, he asked what whiskies I usually drink and recommended new ones based on that. He explained the difference between sherry-cask and peated whiskies, and even which factors in the whisky-making process shape aroma and flavor, in a way that was easy to follow — it felt like taking a mini whisky class while drinking.

Differences I'd only vaguely understood as 'sweet' or 'smoky' made a lot more sense once I actually compared glasses side by side. If you're looking for a whisky bar in Magok and want somewhere that's not just about having lots of options but about being able to really talk through whisky, this was a big advantage.

## The one-person fruit and cheese platter for solo drinkers

The Malt Magok cocktail bar had solo-portion menu items ready for people drinking alone. When you're by yourself, you don't need a mountain of snacks, so having a solo menu at half the price made it a great spot to visit on a night I wanted to drink solo in Magok.

The one-person fruit and cheese platter I ordered at this Magok whisky bar. Five kinds of cheese came out along with green grapes, Korean melon, peaches, and nectarines, so it felt like a full, satisfying spread even for one.

Enjoying the salty, savory character of the cheese first, then the green grapes, cleaned the palate nicely, and the peaches and nectarines brought a sweet, fragrant note that paired especially well with sherry-style whiskies. A well-priced bar near Magok Station where you can enjoy a mix of fruit, cheese, and whisky together.

## First round of cocktails: Pretty Conti and Love Affair

I started with a cocktail! I chose Pretty Conti, made with white wine, dry gin, peach liqueur, and either lime or grape juice. The light acidity of the white wine hit first, followed by a fragrant peach note, letting the herbal, botanical character of the gin come through without feeling heavy — a nice Magok cocktail to start with.

Love Affair combined gin and vodka with strawberry liqueur, grenadine, and lemon juice, giving it a sweeter, more vivid impression. The red fruit scent of the strawberry and the sweetness of the grenadine came first, with the lemon juice's acidity balancing things out behind it. Rather than finishing purely sweet, the acidity kept the ending relatively crisp.

Having menu items like this made me feel that as a cocktail bar in Magok, it would work perfectly well even if you're with someone who isn't much of a whisky drinker. With around 100 cocktails on offer, I'd love to come back and try other signature ones.

## Whisky one: Edradour 10 Year and its sherry sweetness

The first whisky I drank that day was the Edradour 10 Year Unchillfiltered Collection pictured above. Edradour 10 Year is shaped by oloroso sherry casks, and I was told it's a whisky known for concentrated dried fruit flavors like raisins, along with roasted nuts and a spice nuance.

Pouring it into the glass, a sweet, rich sherry aroma reached me first. There was concentrated fruit sweetness like raisins and dried plums, followed by layers of caramel and dark chocolate. On top of that, subtle nuts and cinnamon-like spice kept the aroma from feeling one-note.

At first, sweet fruit flavor took the lead, then woody notes and spice rose up in the middle. The finish left a faint bitterness and woody note behind, ending cleanly. If you like the classic sweetness of sherry whisky, this was a genuinely fun style to drink.

## Whisky two: Signatory Vintage Caol Ila, the turning point

The second Magok whisky I had was the Signatory Vintage Caol Ila 2013 12 Year 100 Proof Edition #65. From the very first whiff, it went in a completely different direction from the Edradour. A salty, sea-breeze quality and peat smoke came up first, followed by dried fruit and a subtle sweetness.

On the palate, the heat of the high proof hit first, but it was quickly followed by a charcoal, bonfire-like smokiness. Alongside that came the sweetness of dried fruit and a heavier fruit character from the sherry cask. What struck me most was that it wasn't just a wall of strong peat smoke — sweet fruit notes kept cutting through the smokiness, giving it several layers of flavor. The smoky aroma that rose up through the nose after a sip lingered a long time, making it more fun to sip slowly. This was the point where I started to sense what style of whisky I actually like.

## Whisky three: Ardbeg Corryvreckan and full-on peat smoke

And with the third whisky, Ardbeg Corryvreckan, I basically confirmed my taste for good. A whisky with vivid, intense peat and a peppery spice.

![Bottle and glass of Ardbeg Corryvreckan whisky](https://img.superchart.com/images/the-malt-magok-solo-whisky-tasting/the-malt-magok-solo-whisky-tasting-19-1g3tn-966.webp)

Drinking it, it was a completely different world from the Edradour before it. On the nose, wet firewood, charcoal, and salty sea air came through strongly, and on the palate, peppery spice and thick smoke spread instantly. But it wasn't just intense char — there was also a bitter depth like dark chocolate and espresso, plus dark red fruit sweetness like cherry and blackcurrant, making it feel really deep. The finish was long and heavy, with coffee, chocolate, pepper, and smoke lingering in the mouth.

Comparing the glasses in the end, I realized that while smooth, sweet sherry whisky is delicious, I definitely prefer peated whiskies with that smoky character. Before this, I could never quite explain what whisky I liked — but comparing several styles directly made my preference clear. A whisky bar visit at The Malt Magok that gave me a real takeaway.

## Is The Malt Magok good for solo drinks and dates?

This visit wasn't just a few glasses of whisky. Learning the difference between sherry and peated whiskies and comparing aroma, flavor, and aging across styles let me figure out what flavors I actually prefer.

The owner was genuinely kind and so knowledgeable about whisky that I could comfortably ask anything I was curious about. I went alone but was never bored — if anything, time flew by since I got a new story with every glass.

If you're not after the currently trendy mingle-with-strangers style of solo bar in Magok but want to genuinely enjoy the drink itself, this bar near Magok Station, The Malt Magok, seems like a great choice. Whether you want a relaxed solo glass or you're looking for a cozy date spot in Magok, I'd recommend visiting The Malt Magok cocktail bar.
