## In short

Mekong Thai Sejong Lake Park Branch is a Vietnamese and Thai restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Sejong Machi building in Eojin-dong, Sejong. After a walk around Sejong Lake Park on a Saturday afternoon, the writer ordered the shrimp wonton pho in spicy (13,900 won plus 2,000 won for the spicy version) and bun cha, and liked the broth that finishes clean behind the heat as well as the smoky grilled pork. Mekong Thai is an easy pho stop near Sejong Lake Park even for diners wary of strong herbs and spices.

Mekong Thai, a pho and bun cha spot in Eojin-dong near Sejong Lake Park.

After a full loop around Sejong Lake Park on the weekend, I always end up with the same dilemma. Slightly hungry, but wanting something light rather than heavy — so I went looking for a good Sejong Lake Park restaurant and landed on Mekong Thai Sejong Lake Park Branch!

![Entrance area of Mekong Thai inside the Sejong Machi building](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-02-us8n8-966.webp)

At first, seeing the name "Mekong Thai," I assumed it was a Thai-only place, but it turns out they serve Vietnamese food too!

![Sign showing Mekong Thai serves both Vietnamese and Thai food](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-04-18axw-966.webp)

There are two Mekong Thai locations in Sejong — the Lake Park branch and the Naseong branch — and both are popular Sejong restaurants, so I had high expectations.

## Where is Mekong Thai Sejong Lake Park Branch, and what is it like inside?

Mekong Thai Sejong Lake Park Branch is on the 3rd floor of the Sejong Machi building. It sits right along the walking route out of the lake park, making it the perfect stop for a meal after a stroll!

Walking in, the colors catch your eye first! The yellow door frame with the dark green glass door, plus the wooden tables and rattan lighting, created a cozy, warm feeling.

## Is there a wait at Mekong Thai on a weekend afternoon?

To cut to the chase — on our Saturday afternoon visit, we sat down with no wait at all. That said, there weren't many empty tables!

What surprised me once we sat down was the crowd. A table of girls together, a couple, and a man eating quietly alone. Asian restaurants usually skew toward one age group, but here it was truly all ages and genders! I think when a restaurant appeals to everyone regardless of age or gender, it usually means the flavors aren't too intense and the seasoning is well balanced — and that's exactly what it was like here!

The basic side dishes are pickled onion and radish, which did a great job cleansing the palate between bites of the main dishes — I refilled them 2-3 times!

## Spicy shrimp wonton pho at Mekong Thai: price and taste

Order and price (for 2 people)

![Table setting for a 2-person order at Mekong Thai](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-08-44grr-m-966.webp)

We ordered shrimp wonton pho and bun cha. The base version of shrimp wonton pho is ₩13,900, and the spicy version costs an extra ₩2,000!

![A bowl of Mekong Thai's shrimp wonton pho spicy](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-09-1o4hz-966.webp)

What surprised me from the first spoonful was the broth. I worried a spicy version might taste heavy or dull, but it's spicy with a genuinely refreshing finish! It's not the kind of aggressive spice with chili oil floating on top — the broth itself is clear and spicy.

![Clear, spicy broth of shrimp wonton pho](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-10-1p05x-966.webp)

There's a generous number of wontons, no skimping. Scoop one up with a spoon and the wrapper holds its shape without falling apart, with the shrimp still giving a nice bite inside.

![Thin pho noodles topped with bean sprouts](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-12-1sqwg-966.webp)

The noodles are on the thinner side, so they go down smoothly, and the bean sprouts on top stayed crunchy even in the hot broth all the way through. The flavor moved from aroma to spice to refreshing finish in a way I really loved — a great Mekong Thai pho.

## Mekong Thai bun cha: the noodles look clumped, is that a problem?

![Full spread of Mekong Thai's bun cha](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-13-1hwhn-966.webp)

Mekong Thai's bun cha comes on one plate with grilled meat, lettuce and sprouts, cha gio (fried spring rolls), plus separate noodles and sauce.

When it first arrived, the noodles looked clumped into one lump and I was a little thrown off, but the moment you dip them in the sauce, they naturally loosen up. If you don't know this and try to pull them apart with chopsticks, the noodles will just break.

![Bun cha noodles loosened after dipping in sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-15-1k6ev-966.webp)

![A lettuce wrap of bun cha with meat and noodles](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-16-tmfrj-966.webp)

The meat has that open-flame aroma left in it, with slightly crispy charred edges, so you get to enjoy the smoky flavor as you eat! Piling meat and noodles onto lettuce and dipping it in the sauce, I finished every last bite without any greasy aftertaste.

## Tips for eating Mekong Thai pho at its best

![Plate of cilantro, cheongyang chili, and lemon served on request](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-17-ly29d-966.webp)

One tip you absolutely need to know at this place: if you ask the staff, they'll bring cilantro, cheongyang chili (Korean green chili pepper), and lemon on a separate plate. If you can't handle cilantro, just leave it be; if you love it, just ask!

![Cilantro added into the pho broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-18-vpycc-966.webp)

I left a bit of broth, and my husband piled a huge amount of cilantro into it, saying "this is the real flavor of this place," and finished off the broth completely.

## One letdown at Mekong Thai: no hot jasmine tea

There was exactly one thing I found lacking. Instead of water, Mekong Thai serves jasmine tea in a kettle, and it's delicious! With the weather turning chilly lately, I asked if they had a hot version, but they only had cold jasmine tea — no hot option was available.

![Mekong Thai's jasmine tea served in a kettle](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-20-u4kh1-966.webp)

![Cold jasmine tea poured into a cup](https://img.superchart.com/images/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha/mekongthai-sejong-lake-park-shrimp-wonton-buncha-21-6gtpi-966.webp)

It was served before the food arrived and I enjoyed it, but after eating a soupy dish, I think it would've been nice to have hot tea to cleanse the palate — a small letdown.
