## In short

Misikga Imokase Sangmu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant near Exit 6 of Sangmu Station in Seo-gu, Gwangju, serving a 17-dish set dinner. A family of four brought their father here at 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday and got samhap bossam, Korean beef yukhoe, beef yukjeon, cheese fried rice, hangover ramyeon and pumpkin injeolmi (chewy rice cake) for 30,000 won per person, all seasoned lightly enough to finish without a single glass of water. Misikga Imokase suits family meals and gatherings where elders are present and drinks are on the table.

## Taking my father out for dinner in Sangmu, Gwangju

Misikga Imokase, a Korean set-menu dinner spot in Gwangju's Sangmu district. I came here wanting to treat my father-in-law to something good. A whopping 17-dish spread for just ₩30,000 — the ultimate in value for money. Along with the variety, the taste was great too.

My father-in-law, who likes to drink soju with his food, said that even though he doesn't live in Sangmu, food this good at this price is worth the trip — haha. He was so satisfied that he asked me to find the place and save it on his phone so he could bring his friends.

## 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday: the Sangmu main branch was nearly full

We put the address into our navigation and headed to Misikga. It was already past 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday, and the place was almost full. This many people, this late on a Saturday? There's even an outdoor terrace with plenty of seats, and still it was packed.

Misikga Imokase in Sangmu is apparently already well known by word of mouth in Gwangju, with people said to line up for it. After eating, I understood why — the food and the price backed it up, haha.

There's an annex building too, and I could see people coming and going there as well. Right next to the main hall, an annex — that alone tells you how popular this Sangmu spot is.

With dish after dish arriving nonstop, the mood of clinking glasses over each course seems to be exactly why people keep coming. Food that calls for a drink, haha.

The moment some people left the terrace seats, I quickly snapped a photo, haha.

First, they brought out spoons and chopsticks that had been sterilized in very hot water. Of course they were already clean, but seeing them sterilized once more right in front of us gave the sense that this place takes hygiene seriously.

## Kimchi pancake, grilled Yeonggwang gulbi and a complimentary steamed potato

Since we came as a party of four, the dishes were served sized for four. The first dishes out were kimchijeon and grilled Yeonggwang gulbi, along with a steamed potato. A steamed potato, out of nowhere? It's not on the menu, so I guess it was a freebie. Oddly delicious, haha.

Everything coming out warm was another plus. The grilled gulbi wasn't too salty and had plenty of flesh, so eating a whole one felt like a proper meal.

While we were still eating the kimchijeon, the staff kept bringing dishes to the table one by one — as soon as one was finished, another arrived. It never stopped, haha.

### Japchae like the holidays at home

A dish I loved for how mild the seasoning was. Chewy, springy glass noodles with a clean-tasting japchae.

### Raw fish in soybean powder, wrapped in perilla leaves

It's good wrapped in perilla leaves, but they also served julienned perilla leaves alongside, so I ended up just eating it straight off the plate. There was plenty of raw fish, so we never felt short. The nuttiness of the soybean powder rounds out the finish nicely.

### Korean beef yukhoe (beef tartare): my father's favorite with a drink

I don't eat yukhoe, so I can't speak to the taste, but my father-in-law nearly finished it himself, haha. Calling it the perfect drinking companion, he slowly wrapped it in perilla leaves as he ate. He said the food was excellent for gatherings and that he'd love to bring his friends here — he must have said it several times throughout the meal, haha. It made me quietly proud.

### Acorn jelly salad, valley-style

Chewy acorn jelly with seasoned vegetables. This too was mildly seasoned. Even after eating this many dishes, we didn't drink a single glass of water the whole meal — the seasoning was that gentle, so eating through all 17 dishes never felt heavy.

### Hwangtae haejangguk (dried pollack hangover soup)

Clean-tasting, with the refreshing crunch of bean sprouts running through it.

### Braised flatfish with radish, changing with the season

The radish was soft and well seasoned, making this braised flatfish really delicious. Since it's a seasonal dish, it was flatfish on the day we visited, but it looks like they rotate whatever fish is in season. The menu lists braised pomfret with radish, so the fish clearly changes depending on availability.

![Samhap bossam with thick pork slices and skate](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner-17-5zng1-900.webp)

![Samhap bossam served with vinegar-chili paste and ssamjang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner-18-1sfip-900.webp)

### Samhap bossam: boiled pork, skate, aged kimchi and fresh kimchi

Thick slices of boiled pork and well-fermented skate, wrapped in fresh kimchi. I'm someone who can't eat skate, so I didn't try it, but my partner and father-in-law tucked in eagerly. It wasn't overly fermented, so the smell wasn't too strong. There was far more of it than it looked. They served vinegar-chili paste, doenjang, and ssamjang together so everyone could wrap it however they liked, haha.

### Sin-jjukkumi (spicy baby octopus)

Well-seasoned, springy octopus with a great texture.

![Springy, well-seasoned sinjjukkumi (spicy octopus)](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner-19-1jccr-900.webp)

### Fried egg cooked in perilla oil

This one was clean, nutty, and delicious to me. Everyone was busy with the flashier dishes so no one finished it, but a warm, nutty fried egg is always a winner. Simple, but you could really tell it was fried in perilla oil — it was that good.

### Beef yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef)

An all-around favorite. No off smell, tender, served piping hot — it disappeared instantly. Must have been good beef, because made into yukjeon it was pure honey, haha.

## Finishing with cheese fried rice and hangover ramyeon

We were full, and full again, and then — cheese fried rice? With some of the sinjjukkumi still left, they took it away and turned it into fried rice for us. Piping hot, with cheese stretching in long strings, delicious but with stomachs already full — a happy dilemma, haha.

![Cheese fried rice made with leftover spicy octopus and seasoning](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner-22-h8moh-900.webp)

![Close-up of stretchy melted cheese on the fried rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner-23-1dy9n-900.webp)

Hangover ramyeon. It looked like more than one packet of noodles went in. On a normal day I'd have eaten this happily too, but my stomach was in no state for it. Usually I eat well even when full, so it was strange to feel myself weakening, haha. The noodles had a nice chewy bite — exactly my style.

## Three desserts: fruit, pumpkin injeolmi and injeolmi snow ice

Three desserts came out: fruit (dragon fruit/Shine Muscat grapes/grapes/cherry tomatoes/orange), Gwangju's famous pumpkin injeolmi, and injeolmi snow ice.

![Three desserts: fruit, pumpkin injeolmi, and injeolmi snow ice](https://img.superchart.com/images/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner/gwangju-sangmu-imokase-family-dinner-24-yqfpq-900.webp)

The fruit came out in a vivid, colorful spread. Gwangju's Changeop rice cakes are very famous, and I'm not sure if the pumpkin injeolmi served here is that exact brand, but did you know there's a proper way to eat it? Changeop rice cake is meant to be pulled apart piece by piece along its grain — I only just learned that myself, haha. Apparently this pumpkin injeolmi is quite the hot item.

Even though I was clearly full, the chewy pumpkin injeolmi was so good I asked for a bit more, and they brought it right over. Thanks to that, I got to eat my fill of this famous rice cake. Such a kind owner.

The injeolmi patbingsu wasn't sweet at all. No condensed milk, no syrup — just red bean and rice cake. Paired with a crunchy topping, it felt like the clean finish that soothed everything after such a heavy meal. Not being too sweet made it thoroughly satisfying.

## Why Misikga Imokase also works for group dinners

Misikga Imokase Sangmu Main Branch, where you can enjoy 17 dishes this pleasantly, deliciously, and affordably — I really loved it. What stands out here is the mild seasoning that lets you eat comfortably while trying a wide variety of dishes; a great-value Gwangju spot for gatherings that calls for a drink.

With the whole hall available to rent for up to 50–60 people, it's also great for group dinners in private rooms — this Sangmu district dinner spot at Misikga Imokase can be booked by phone on weekdays or weekends. I have a feeling my father-in-law will be back again soon, haha. I came here wanting to treat him to a meal, and this family dinner at Misikga Imokase Sangmu Main Branch was a success.
