I hadn't been to Yeonnam-dong in a while, and when I got a craving for Korean snack food, I found this Yeonnam-dong tteokbokki spot, Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch. It sits right on the main hotspot street of Yeonnam and apparently just opened recently — the place is so clean and the neon signage is so vivid it caught my eye from far away!

## What is the interior like? A modern street-food tent

Inside, Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch is full of Hongdae vibes, with bold wall printing everywhere. The atmosphere kind of feels like a modernized version of an old-school pojangmacha (street food tent). I was surprised there were more foreign visitors than Korean ones... !! A lot of delivery orders go out too, and there's a separate takeout kiosk at the entrance that gets a lot of use. With the weather cooling down these days, this would make great drinking food for a stroll around Yeonnam-dong park or the forest path 🍻

The chairs have storage space underneath for bags, which felt like a really efficient use of space. Since the tteokbokki keeps simmering on a stove in the middle of the table, sauce splatters easily, so being able to tuck your bag away underneath was really nice 🪑

### Seating and how to order at Eungkeum Tteokbokki

The interior isn't huge, but the seats are large and spaced well apart, so it actually felt more comfortable to sit down. There's only one group table, and the rest are 4-person tables, so if you're coming as a big group, it'd be good to call ahead or reserve •• 📳 You order via the tablet at your table and pay afterward at the counter.

## The menu: Korean snack food plus drinking snacks

The menu has your basic tteokbokki restaurant set items like tteok-twi-sun (rice cake, fried snacks, sundae combo) and gimbap (seaweed rice roll), but because it has a fusion-ish vibe of snack bar plus pub plus lunch spot, there's also dried filefish and peanuts as drinking snacks, spicy stir-fried pork, udon, fried rice — the menu is seriously varied! Good for a second round after Yeonnam drinks or just for a regular lunch.

Such a thoughtful owner. These look like the plastic gloves you'd need for chicken or dakbal (spicy chicken feet) dishes! Places that actually provide these gloves are rarer than you'd think, so this was a nice little touch 🕊️

What we ordered at Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch was the rosé tteok-twi-sun + 2-person drink set for ₩29,900. Rosé for my companion who can't handle spice ➿ We went with the mildest level of rosé, and ordered lemon sparkling water and apple mango ade. The apple mango ade had thick chunks of actual apple mango in it. Ended up ordering an unintended dessert too —

### How the rosé tteokbokki with wheat rice cakes tastes

You can choose rice or wheat rice cakes, and I'm firmly team wheat for tteokbokki... . The rice cakes were super chewy! The texture and look reminded me a lot of a certain famous tteokbokki brand's. There's bacon, ham, quail eggs and other varied ingredients mixed in, which made it really tasty 🍡 If you want a spicier rosé flavor, ordering the spiciest level should give you a good kick.

### Sundae with added liver, and why original beats rosé for dipping

For sundae, you need the organ meats — that's exactly me. If you're someone who likes the liver more than the sundae itself when eating sundae •• 🙌 The default is sundae only, so I paid extra for the liver! If you like dipping your sundae in the tteokbokki broth, I'd strongly recommend going with the original flavor over the rosé.

### The fried sides and the free mini fried water dumplings

The fried items included potato, croquette, squid, sweet potato, vegetable, and kimmari (seaweed rice rolls) — such a huge variety! The pieces were small, which actually made them nicer to eat in one bite 🫕 The owner also gave us a free order of mini fried water dumplings as a service. Even though it was free, the portion was really generous 🤍

There were small dishes of soy sauce on the side of the table, so we ate with that too! I'm usually a tteokbokki-broth-dipping person, but every so often that plain soy sauce flavor really hits the spot ➿
