A pork noodle soup tour is basically a must while traveling in Jeju, haha. I heard there was a local favorite in Aewol, so I headed straight there — Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch.

## Parking and how to find Handam Guksu — next to Olive Young, 1 hour at the Handam Trail lot

Handam Guksu supports 1 hour of parking at the nearby Handam Coastal Trail parking lot, so I could visit without worrying about parking. It's also right next to Olive Young, so it was easy to find!

## Inside Handam Guksu — window seats and high chairs

When I visited, the place was so packed there wasn't a single empty seat, and I could really feel its popularity. Visiting in person, I understood why Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is famous as a local favorite for pork noodle soup.

I snapped photos whenever a seat opened up — overall the seating was clean and comfortable, so I never felt uneasy through the whole meal, and the window seats had such a nice view that it really felt like a proper Jeju trip.

## Handam Guksu menu and ordering — bone-broth pork noodles and dongchimi bibim noodles

Here's the menu board at Handam Guksu. True to a pork noodle soup restaurant, the noodle menu was the main lineup — bone-broth pork noodle soup, mala pork noodle soup, dongchimi bibim noodles — and there was also pork rice soup for people who prefer rice. Since we'd already had breakfast, we kept it light and only ordered the bone-broth pork noodle soup and dongchimi bibim noodles. They also had side dishes like dombe cold boiled pork, handmade pork tteokgalbi, and pork mandu (dumplings), which seemed great to pair with the noodles.

### Side dishes at Handam Guksu are self-serve

The basic side dishes are on a self-serve bar, so you can freely help yourself. The basics were pickled radish strips and napa cabbage kimchi, and each one was seasoned deliciously with a lot of umami, going great with the noodles.

## Why the noodles arrive in brass bowls

Our order came out quickly, which I appreciated. Everything was served in brass yugi bowls, giving off a premium impression, and the noodles were plated so neatly that it felt like eating with your eyes first.

### Dongchimi bibim noodles — finely chopped pork and chilled radish-water broth

First, the dongchimi bibim noodles were plated almost like a fancy bibimbap, which impressed me. Handam Guksu's bibim noodles don't come with the pork sliced in big chunks — instead it's finely chopped into easy-to-eat pieces.

Dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) broth is served alongside too, so you can mix it in as you go, or drink it separately as a refreshing broth on its own — I loved that option.

Handam Guksu's dongchimi bibim noodles had a sweet-and-tangy sauce base that pretty much any Korean would love, no arguments.

The noodles were cooked to perfect doneness too. The combination of noodles soaked in savory sauce with pork on the side couldn't possibly taste bad, and even though I'm sensitive to gamey smells, the meat had no off-smell and was cooked well without being dry — I really enjoyed it.

### Bone-broth pork noodle soup — clean broth and crunchy bean sprouts

The pork noodle soup also came piled high with boiled pork. The clean, light flavor made me realize pork noodle soup eaten locally in Jeju really is different — and it was loaded with crunchy bean sprouts too, giving it a great texture.

The deeply simmered bone broth paired with the clean noodles was impressively delicious. Overall it was a light, clean flavor, so it seems like it'd also be great as a hangover cure after a night of drinking. Paired with the tasty napa cabbage kimchi, it made for a really filling lunch.

## Who should eat at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch?

You could really tell the owner doesn't skimp on ingredients — there was so much boiled pork that it felt very filling. For that reason, I genuinely recommend Handam Guksu in Aewol to anyone looking for a hearty meal in the area!

If you're looking for good Jeju-style pork noodle soup at a nice price, this is a place you should definitely visit. It's also close to Aewol's tourist spots, so I think I'll be coming back often. That wraps up my review of Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a filling lunch spot in Aewol.
