## Inside Katsu Monster: atmosphere and what the store provides

Inside Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch was bigger and had higher ceilings than I expected, so it never felt cramped. You could catch glimpses of the cooking process through the open kitchen, which gave it a clean, hygienic feel, and watching the music program on the wall-mounted TV while we waited kept boredom away.

The menu ranges from the classic loin katsu and fillet katsu to assorted katsu, mixed katsu, and triple katsu, organized by cut. There are also nabe, udon, and curry dishes, so just reading the menu took us a while!

Having the gabisal (pork skirt) cut attached is the whole point of this dish. The meaty aroma was so intense I could feel the juices seeping out the moment I cut it with my chopsticks — the coating was thin and crisp while the inside stayed moist.

The fat layer on the gabisal side in particular was so soft and nutty that it might rank among the best pork cutlets I've ever had!

Even the rice wasn't plain white rice — it came as kelp and hijiki rice, adding a fragrant depth of flavor, which made me feel like this place pays attention to even the small details.

## Kimchi katsu nabe, 16,000 won: the broth for a rainy day

This dish pairs pork cutlet with a spicy kimchi broth. The broth was vivid red and thick, clearly looking spicy at first glance, and one spoonful confirmed a deep savoriness underneath the heat.

Even as a nabe ingredient, the pork cutlet was cut thick enough that it stayed crisp instead of going soggy after sitting in the broth for a while, which impressed me. I'm not great with spicy food, but the heat here wasn't overwhelming, so I could enjoy it comfortably to the end.

## Is Katsu Monster worth it for a Yeonnam-dong date meal?

We came for a Yeonnam-dong date, and both the food and the atmosphere were satisfying enough that I'd want to come back. It's good enough to add to a Hongdae food list, and if you're looking for Hongdae restaurants or Yeonnam-dong restaurants, it's worth a visit. (I'm already planning to come back for the tenderloin next time!!)
