## In short

Wolhadong is a pork gomtang (pork bone soup) restaurant in an alley near Ssamziegil in Insadong, Seoul. After a roughly 10-minute wait at weekend lunch, the writer took the bar counter facing Wolhadong's open kitchen with a child and ordered two Wolha gomtang at 12,000 won each, a half plate of cold jeyuk (sliced boiled pork) at 10,000 won, and a glass of sogokju rice wine at 5,000 won. Even a child who cannot handle spice ate well, and the sogokju pairing that cut the richness of the pork was the highlight.

Today I want to share an honest review of a hidden gem gomtang (bone soup) place I found in an alley near Ssamziegil in Insadong.

I visited with my kid, and both the vibe and the food were excellent. Here's my review of Wolhadong (월하동), a place that hit my taste exactly right! :)

## Finding Wolhadong in Insadong: the storefront and the toad statue

Wolhadong is a charming little place you find by walking down one of Insadong's narrow, atmospheric alleys. From the entrance, it already gives off soft traditional vibes — it felt like a proper photo spot.

There's a cute little toad statue near the entrance in particular, and there's a saying that touching it brings you good fortune — so of course I ended up touching it several times without even meaning to.

### How long is the weekend lunch wait at Wolhadong?

Since it was the weekend, there were waiting chairs set up outside, and we got in after about a 10-minute wait. Looking around the charming alley made the 10 minutes fly by, so it wasn't boring at all.

## Inside Wolhadong: hanok-style room and open-kitchen bar seats

The moment we stepped inside Wolhadong, it really felt like walking into an old tiled-roof house or hanok, with a strong traditional atmosphere. There were quite a few foreign tourists and solo diners too!

Thanks to the cozy, warm space, it was a really satisfying environment for eating with a kid.

There were regular tables available, but we were seated at the daetzi (bar-style counter table).

![Neatly arranged bar table seating at Wolhadong](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-14-1ezng-900.webp)

At first I worried it might be a bit uncomfortable sitting with a kid at the bar counter. But since it faced right onto the open kitchen, we could watch the cooking process happen in front of us, which actually felt charming and nice. The clean, tidy upkeep of the place made the whole meal comfortable.

## What is on the Wolhadong menu?

![Wolhadong's menu board with prices](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-15-1upsv-900.webp)

The menu board was easy to read and neatly organized. It stood out for having a solid lineup, from the deep, rich pork gomtang as the signature dish to the lighter cold jeyuk (sliced pork) side, available in half or full portions.

They also sell traditional liquors like sogokju by the glass, perfect for pairing with a drink. Instead of an overwhelming menu, it was tightly curated around core dishes that make a place feel like a real hidden gem, which made ordering easy. The side dishes also came in small portions, which felt considerate and practical whether you're dining solo or on a date.

## Wolha gomtang, 12,000 won: how does the broth taste?

![Table set with Wolha gomtang and cold jeyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-16-1cviq-900.webp)

Wolha gomtang, ₩12,000. My wife and I each ordered a bowl of gomtang and added a half plate of cold jeyuk on the side. There was also a spicy red gomtang option, but we went with the original since we wanted to taste the milky, classic broth in its purest form.

The first sip of broth alone was genuinely impressive — clean yet deep, with real depth of flavor coming through. It tasted like something with the kind of serious skill you'd see on Culinary Class Wars.

![Kimchi side dish served with the gomtang](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-18-1a4cx-900.webp)

The kimchi also seemed homemade — perfect for a gomtang lover like me. A bite of kimchi with a spoonful of rice, ah~ classic Korean-food-lover comfort right there.

![Pork gomtang topped with thinly sliced meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-19-nlzec-900.webp)

The meat on top of the soup was sliced thin, not chewy at all, and just melted in the mouth. The rice came already mixed into the broth, and the broth was so rich and delicious that I drank the whole bowl down to the bottom.

![Half plate of Wolhadong's cold jeyuk with special sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-20-13k7v-1200.webp)

### Cold jeyuk half plate, 10,000 won, and how the child liked it

Cold jeyuk half plate, ₩10,000. The cold jeyuk we ordered as a side had a wonderfully tender texture, and dipping it into the special sauce made it feel like a fancy dish.

![A piece of cold jeyuk dipped in sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-21-1ly03-900.webp)

Even my kid, who can't handle spicy food, ate it up happily, so I'd strongly recommend this place for visits with children too.

![A glass of sogokju at Wolhadong](https://img.superchart.com/images/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family/insadong-weekend-wait-bar-seat-family-23-1p3aj-900.webp)

### Sogokju by the glass, 5,000 won: the pairing with pork

Sogokju glass, ₩5,000. The highlight of this meal was definitely the glass of sogokju, a traditional rice wine. Sipping it alongside the gomtang and cold jeyuk, its fragrant, clean character cut right through the richness of the meat for a perfect pairing. If you visit Wolhadong, I highly recommend trying a glass of sogokju.

## Where to park near Wolhadong in Insadong

A nearby alternative parking option is the Suunhoegwan parking lot. It's reportedly ₩3,000 per 30 minutes and ₩1,000 per hour! There are also private and public parking lots nearby as backup options — worth keeping in mind.

## Is Wolhadong worth a visit with a child? Final verdict

A must-visit restaurant in Insadong where you can enjoy Culinary Class Wars-level gomtang paired with sogokju, all within a serene, tiled-roof hanok atmosphere.
