Today I visited Gusa Yeonnam, a place in Yeonnam-dong that was great for delicious teppan cooking and a drink :)

![Gusa Yeonnam, a teppan izakaya in Yeonnam-dong](https://img.superchart.com/images/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan-01-128ib-966.webp)

There are so many good restaurants and bars in Yeonnam-dong that it's hard to decide where to go, so this time I looked for somewhere a little different from the usual Japanese food — a place where you can watch teppan dishes get grilled right in front of you! Gusa Yeonnam is a Japanese-style teppan izakaya run by an owner born in '94, with teppan-grilled menu items like wagyu, beef intestine and shrimp, plus yakisoba, okonomiyaki, nabe and more. Being able to watch the food cook right at the teppan was one of the fun parts of Gusa Yeonnam 🔥

## Where is Gusa Yeonnam, and what should you know first?

Gusa Yeonnam is on the basement floor of Yeontral Tower at 6 Donggyo-ro 30-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul. It's about 300m from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3, so you only need to walk a short way into the Yeonnam-dong alleys to find it. It's also close to the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail, aka Yeontral Park, so it'd be great paired with a Yeonnam-dong date course.

As far as I can confirm, business hours are 12:00–24:00 with last order at 23:00. However, some of the newer platforms show different hours by day of the week, so I'd recommend checking before you go. Parking on-site is reportedly difficult, so public transit is recommended over driving.

## Inside the basement space: atmosphere and seating at Gusa Yeonnam

Walking from Hongik Univ. Station toward Yeonnam-dong, you'll find Gusa Yeonnam in the basement of Yeontral Tower. Just from the address you might picture a dim, cramped basement, but it was actually cleaner and cozier than expected — a comfortable space for a meal or a drink.

Looking at other visitor reviews too, there are 2-person and 4-person tables along with bar-style counter seats, and many people mention being able to watch the cooking up close from the seats right in front of the teppan.

When the weather's nice, there are also outdoor seats, which seemed like a good way to enjoy that distinct Yeonnam-dong atmosphere while having a drink.

## What's on the menu at Gusa Yeonnam?

The biggest feature of Gusa Yeonnam is definitely the teppan cooking! Unlike a typical izakaya where you're served a finished dish, you get to watch your order cook right on the teppan, which made the wait surprisingly fun.

The menu was more varied than I expected too — from beef teppan dishes like wagyu to seafood like beef intestine, shrimp and scallops, plus Japanese dishes like okonomiyaki, yakisoba, yaki udon, and even nabe and stir-fries, making it a good all-in-one spot for a meal and drinks. It was also convenient to check the menu and order through the QR code on the table.

## What I ordered at Gusa Yeonnam

![Table spread of teppan dishes ordered at Gusa Yeonnam](https://img.superchart.com/images/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan-05-1krrr-966.webp)

This time I tried out a few different menu items!

### Grilled wagyu MB9 skirt steak, 19,900 won

![Wagyu MB9 skirt steak grilled medium well](https://img.superchart.com/images/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan-07-qbzst-966.webp)

The wagyu MB9 skirt steak I ordered! Looking at my order, I added shrimp and beef intestine on top of the base menu. I asked for the wagyu medium well, and since it's grilled right there on the teppan, I found myself watching the whole grilling process. Wagyu MB9 skirt steak still shows up as one of the signature items on the current menu. The meat was great dipped in just salt or wasabi to taste the beef itself, and it paired well as a drinking snack too.

### Black tiger shrimp grilled in butter, 19,000 won

The most visually striking dish of this visit! As you can see in the photo, there were several big black tiger shrimp piled with a generous amount of soft sauce. The shrimp had that golden-browned look from the teppan, which made it even more appetizing 🤤 Underneath the shrimp was a bed of bean sprouts and vegetables, and eating them together with the shrimp gave a nicer range of textures than the shrimp alone.

The sauce on top was soft and nutty-tasting, which went really well with the plump shrimp meat. The current online menu lists the black tiger shrimp with butter sauce at ₩19,900, so it may differ from what I actually paid at the time of my visit.

### Grilled Korean beef intestine 150g, 14,000 won

![Korean beef intestine grilled on the teppan, 150g](https://img.superchart.com/images/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan/gusa-yeonnam-wagyu-mb9-teppan-10-18x2m-966.webp)

And of course, beef intestine — a must for drinking food! Grilled on the teppan, the outside came out nicely browned while the inside kept that nutty, savory flavor. Wagyu and shrimp alone can feel a bit plain, but adding beef intestine definitely diversified the combination.

If you're visiting with a group, I'd recommend ordering one meat dish + one seafood dish + one intestine or noodle dish. For reference, the currently listed menu shows the Korean beef intestine grill at ₩19,900, so it looks like the price has changed since my visit.

## Half the fun is watching the teppan

One thing I liked about Gusa Yeonnam was that it's not just about the taste — you also get to enjoy watching the food get made. Seeing the meat and seafood sizzle away on the teppan, with those good smells rising up, built anticipation even before the food arrived.

Other visitor reviews also often mention the open kitchen and the teppan cooking performance as a highlight of Gusa Yeonnam. So next time I'd like to try sitting at the counter seats right by the teppan!

## A Yeonnam-dong izakaya that works for drinks too

Gusa Yeonnam is fine to visit just for the food, but personally I felt it was a great spot to go for an evening drink. They reportedly have a good range of drinks that pair well with Japanese-style teppan food, like highballs, sake and draft beer.

Meat dishes like wagyu or beef intestine go well with a drink, and sharing dishes like shrimp, okonomiyaki or yakisoba among a group also seems like a good way to have a few drinks.

## Who will enjoy Gusa Yeonnam most?

- Anyone looking for an izakaya with good vibes in Yeonnam-dong
- Anyone who prefers teppan cooking over typical Japanese food
- Anyone wanting something different for a date
- Anyone wanting good drinking snacks and a drink after work
- Anyone looking for a place to share several dishes with friends
- Anyone who enjoys watching food get cooked in front of them
- Anyone looking for a dinner spot near Hongik Univ. Station

In fact, a lot of visitor reviews mention coming here for dates, drinking gatherings and dinners.

## Final thoughts on Gusa Yeonnam

Gusa Yeonnam was a fun change from the typical Yeonnam-dong izakaya, thanks to the teppan dishes cooked right in front of you! This time I ordered wagyu MB9 skirt steak, Korean beef intestine and black tiger shrimp, trying a good mix of meat and seafood.

The black tiger shrimp in particular looked great even just in photos, since they were so big 🦐 and the combo with bean sprouts worked well too. It's a solid choice for a date in Yeonnam-dong, or for dinner and drinks with friends at a place with good vibes. Next time I want to try the okonomiyaki, yakisoba or nabe, so I'd definitely like to come back 🤭💕
