La la la~ 👯 Today's a day for a girls' outing! 💃🏻

I met up with a friend in Seoul after a long time, and the cooler weather really made it feel like fall was here! 🍂 On the way to eat, the weather was so nice we wandered down a side street and stumbled onto 'Munhwa Bakery.' This place specializes in takeout and is known for delicious bread — as certified bread lovers, we couldn't just walk past. So without a second thought, we headed straight to Munhwa Bakery.

## Where is Munhwa Bakery and what are its hours?

## Munhwa Bakery's small storefront near Ikseon-dong

Munhwa Bakery sits on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Maybe because it's so close to Ikseon-dong, its distinct vibe caught my eye even while just passing by. Instead of a big, flashy bakery, it had a small and cozy feel!

## How long is the queue before Munhwa Bakery opens?

Munhwa Bakery opens at 11am, but there was already a long line before 11 even hit. Wait... a queue before opening — is this real?😮 Seeing a line this long form before opening made me think, yeah, this really must be one of Seoul's top three bakeries. I joined the line before it got any later!

## Inside Munhwa Bakery: only 2 groups at a time

![Inside the small interior of Munhwa Bakery](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-06-vo6sg-900.webp)

Finally it was my turn to go in. The inside of Munhwa Bakery is small, so only 2 groups are allowed in at a time. I got even more curious how good the bread must be for such a crowd to gather before opening!

## What to order: Munhwa Bakery's 3 signature breads

![Sign for Munhwa Bakery's signature menu items](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-07-1gozm-966.webp)

Munhwa Bakery's three signature items turned out to be 'garlic bread,' 'onion bagel,' and 'coffee bread.'

If I just got the garlic bread, I'd be curious about the onion bagel, and if I just got the onion bagel, I'd wonder about the coffee bread... So I asked my friend, what are you getting? And she said, obviously, "All three!" I thought, "who knows when I'll be back in Seoul," so I grabbed all three signature items plus a salt bread through the review event. Got it all!

## Garlic bread: moist, buttery and sweet-salty

![Packaged garlic bread from Munhwa Bakery](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-13-qg5m8-966.webp)

The most striking thing about Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread on first bite was how moist it was, more than I expected. Usually when I think garlic bread, I picture a crispy exterior heavily coated in garlic butter, but Munhwa's version has a slightly chewy outside with a really soft, moist inside. The garlic flavor comes through strongly, paired with a sweetness that makes it sweet-and-salty in the best way — I kept reaching for more. I feel like it'd pair really well with an iced Americano. I meant to stop at one piece but ended up finishing the whole thing 😂

## Onion bagel: better than the one I had in New York, my top pick

![Onion bagel with cream filling from Munhwa Bakery](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-15-9t68l-966.webp)

![Size comparison of Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-16-qa07s-966.webp)

Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel is pretty large, so even one felt more like a light meal than a snack. It has that classic chewy bagel texture with the subtle sweetness and aroma of onion woven throughout, and they work really well together. There's a lot of cream inside too, but it never feels heavy — the onion flavor cuts through it here and there, making it hard to stop eating. I've been to plenty of famous bagel shops, and this was even better than the bagels I had in New York. Personally, the onion bagel is my number one! 👍

## Coffee bread: the softest texture of the three

![Coffee bread from Munhwa Bakery](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-17-1c33r-966.webp)

Of the four breads I brought home, the coffee bread had the softest texture. The bread itself is fluffy and moist, melting in your mouth with the first bite, and the subtle coffee aroma that comes through is more appealing than I expected. The cream inside is soft and sweet too, matching the name perfectly. If you like coffee flavor, this one's hard not to love, and I imagine it'd be great with a glass of milk.

## Salt bread, the review-event bonus

![Salt bread received through the review event](https://img.superchart.com/images/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel/munhwa-bakery-jongno-onion-bagel-19-hzjzb-966.webp)

Salt bread is such a common item these days that I didn't expect much, but it was genuinely delicious. The outside has a slight crispness, and the inside carries that classic savory butter flavor and salty note of salt bread without being overpowering — very easy to eat. Personally I think it'd taste even better warm, with the butter aroma coming through more, so warming it slightly in the oven before eating might be a good idea.

## 💬 Final verdict on Munhwa Bakery

If you're planning to visit Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong and love bread, this is a place worth stopping by. While looking into Munhwa Bakery, I also learned a heartwarming story: the bakery only sells bread made that same day, and any unsold bread is donated to children in need, elderly people living alone, disabled individuals living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters, and social welfare facilities. It's more impressive that they don't stop at making great bread — they go further, sharing what's left with those who need it. Delicious bread that warms the heart too — I hope Munhwa Bakery keeps being loved for a long time.🤎
