## In short

Ilpum Magok is a Japanese restaurant between Magok and Balsan in Gangseo, Seoul, serving sushi and kaisendon. We shared today’s sushi and the basic kaisendon, then added sea bream sushi; even my junior who loves kaisendon in Japan was happy. Verdict: a satisfying spot for generous slices of fish and a varied meal.

I have a younger friend from my neighborhood who always seeks out sushi or kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) whenever he travels to Japan. He loves sashimi and sushi even in everyday life, so I wondered where to take him and landed on Ilpum. Actually, I had visited another Ilpum branch before and remembered enjoying it. So this time, I decided to trust that memory and try the Magok branch. Let me introduce Ilpum Magok (일품 마곡점), a place my junior enjoyed too.

### Exterior and how to get there

On the way to Ilpum, there was a banner across the street, so it was easy to spot. Ilpum Magok is on the first floor of Leaderstar Tower Magok. It is a straightforward walk from Balsan Station Exit 8, and the large photos of kaisendon and sushi in front of the restaurant catch your eye right away.

![Information at the front of Ilpum Magok](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-02-xf4yr-900.webp)

The outdoor sign lists signature dishes including kaisendon, today’s sushi, and unagidon (grilled eel rice bowl), along with photos from TV appearances.

![Ilpum Magok outdoor information board](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-03-1bvzk-900.webp)

Once you open the door, you will see quite a few signatures from celebrities who have visited, as you would expect from a popular restaurant.

## Benefits to know before booking

You can simply walk into Ilpum, but there are quite a few benefits to pick up by using Naver Booking. There is normally no set time limit for meals, though it may be limited to 1 hour and 30 minutes from your booking time if another reservation or waiting guests are next.

Bookings require no deposit, and apparently there is no separate penalty for same-day cancellation. But if you accumulate two no-shows after your reservation time, future bookings may be refused, so it is best to keep your appointment.

Another benefit that caught my eye was free corkage. If you request the free corkage event while booking through Naver, corkage for one bottle of wine is free. It is a pretty nice perk if you like a glass of wine with sushi or kaisendon.

There are also coupons available when booking through Naver Place: two pieces of birthday celebration nigiri sushi, a free corkage coupon, and two pieces of pregnancy-support choice sushi. If you have a seafood or other food allergy, tell them in advance and they will provide substitutions where possible. Prepayment can be used freely at all Ilpum locations and has no expiration date, so frequent visitors may want to keep that in mind too.

## A spacious, calm interior

Ilpum Magok was roomier than I expected. I have been to other branches too, but what I especially liked about the Magok branch was how spacious it is. From outside, I thought it might be a small, long bar-style sushi restaurant, but the space extends quite far inside.

There are bar seats along the open kitchen and table seating farther in. With white walls and deep wood tones, it feels clean and calm overall; a large window along one side lets in daylight, so it did not feel cramped.

There are many office workers around Magok and Balsan, so lots of restaurants get crowded at lunch. Here, though, the interior itself is spacious, making it nice for a meal with friends, a family gathering, or even a date.

## Today’s sushi and kaisendon menu

Looking over Ilpum Magok’s menu, there was a remarkably wide range of kaisendon. There were options from basic and premium kaisendon to salmon and tuna bowls, uni-topped dishes, and unagidon. My today’s sushi was ₩28,000, while my junior’s kaisendon was ₩26,000. You can add individual sushi too, so we ordered two pieces of sea bream sushi while eating.

A new menu item was ankimo hosomaki (thin sushi roll with monkfish liver), ₩15,000. It combines monkfish liver with hosomaki filled with dried gourd strips and pickled radish, so it seems like a dish ankimo fans would be curious about.

Our order: today’s sushi for me, regular kaisendon for my junior, plus two pieces of sea bream sushi. Rather than ordering the same thing, it was nice to get one sushi set and one kaisendon to look over and share a little of each. Since my junior hunts down kaisendon whenever he visits Japan, I was quietly curious about his reaction.

## Today’s sushi with generous fish toppings

The basic accompaniments arrived first. Before the main dishes came out, there was soup, steamed egg, and pickled sides. The steamed egg was warm and soft, the kind that settles your stomach before you really get into the sashimi. Taking a sip of warm soup while eating sushi or kaisendon also refreshed the palate. I always get a soup refill, haha.

My favorite: today’s sushi. It comes as one plate, and the selection was more generous than I expected. You can try many kinds of sushi—salmon, tuna, white fish, shrimp, and more—along with egg and maki rolls.

More than anything, the size of the neta (sushi topping) stood out. Instead of fish just lightly laid over the rice, the slices were quite long and thick, so their presence was unmistakable in every bite. This was exactly the style that had made me remember enjoying another Ilpum branch before.

### Starting simply with white fish

With sushi, you can taste each fish more clearly by starting with milder fish and gradually moving to richer, fattier ones. So I began with white fish, then moved on to fish with more richness, such as salmon. The white fish was mild with a pleasantly springy texture; after that, the salmon’s soft, nutty flavor came through even more clearly.

![One piece of today’s sushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-17-6hik9-900.webp)

There was not a single disappointing piece in today’s sushi. It just melts in your mouth. I was so satisfied with every bite.

Since soup had already come out, I did not expect another broth dish, but cold udon topped with chicken karaage arrived midway through too. The cool, bouncy udon noodles and crispy fried chicken karaage made a nice change of pace after the sashimi and sushi.

After starting with mild fish and moving on to richer sushi like salmon, this refreshing cold udon cleansed my palate again. The contrast between the cold udon and warm, crunchy karaage was particularly fun too.

### Two pieces of sea bream sushi and futomaki

The white fish was better than expected, so we added two pieces of sea bream sushi as we ate. One piece each for my junior and me!!

![Extra order of sea bream sushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-21-1pgf8-900.webp)

![Two pieces of sea bream sushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-22-1n054-900.webp)

Sea bream’s mild flavor and chewy texture made it great early in the meal. Moving on afterward to bolder, richer sushi such as salmon and tuna made their differences easier to notice. The sea bream itself was not thinly sliced either, so I was happy we added it separately.

And we cannot leave out the futomaki (thick sushi roll). It was packed with filling, and it was really large in person. Rolled with fish, egg, and several other ingredients, it was almost too big to eat in one bite, and it was more filling than a single piece of sushi. Eating only sashimi can start to feel similar, but the cold udon and futomaki made the meal feel much more varied.

## Basic kaisendon that pleased my junior

My junior, who loves eating kaisendon when he visits Japan, ordered the basic kaisendon for ₩26,000. Despite the word “basic,” it looked very impressive. The bowl was loaded with salmon, tuna, white fish, shrimp, scallop, and other seafood, with salmon roe popping in the center. Perilla leaves and seaweed stood upright as well, making it look wonderfully generous from the moment it arrived.

Sometimes you order kaisendon and receive mostly rice with only a few pieces of fish, right? What I liked here was that the fish was large and the varieties were evenly included. (My junior got full and ate mostly the fish, leaving a lot of rice.)

![Basic kaisendon topped with assorted seafood](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-23-1ya15-900.webp)

Kaisendon also came with seaweed, so you can place a little fish and rice on it and wrap it up. I enjoyed the fish on its own at first, then with rice, and then wrapped in seaweed, which gave the same ingredients slightly different ways to enjoy them.

The tuna and salmon were thick, and ingredients with different textures, including white fish and scallop, meant every part of the bowl offered a different taste. My junior said it was such a high-end kaisendon and ate it very happily. Since he is the kind of friend who often seeks out sushi and kaisendon in Japan, I had worried a little more than usual about where to take him—but seeing him enjoy it made me feel I had chosen well.

![Panna cotta dessert with mango](https://img.superchart.com/images/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum/magok-sushi-kaisendon-ilpum-24-ejvea-900.webp)

## Finishing with mango panna cotta

We finished the meal with mango panna cotta for dessert. After sushi, kaisendon, cold udon, and futomaki, a sweet, soft dessert at the end was just right. The tender, bouncy panna cotta and bright sweet-tart mango felt like a clean finish after all the sashimi and sushi.

The menu was so substantial from beginning to end that after the final dessert, my junior said he felt like he was going to burst!!

> From thick-cut sushi to a generous kaisendon, this is a Magok spot where anyone who loves sashimi is likely to leave satisfied.
