## In short

Geumseong Hoegwan Seoul City Hall Direct Branch is a charcoal beef and pork BBQ restaurant in the Bukchang-dong food alley near City Hall Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a return visit with her mom, the writer ordered the galbisal (beef rib finger) lunch set for two at 28,000 won and added galbi bon-samgyeop (pork belly) at 19,000 won and myeongnan-bap (pollack roe rice) at 5,000 won, with rice and sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) already included in the lunch set. For a filling grilled-meat lunch with rice and stew near City Hall Station, the Geumseong Hoegwan lunch set is strong value.

My mom and I went here once for a meal and it was good, so this time we went back. It's the Korean BBQ spot near Seoul City Hall — Geumseong Hoegwan Seoul City Hall Direct Branch.

This place is a charcoal BBQ restaurant in the Bukchang-dong food alley near City Hall Station. You can eat beef and pork together, and best of all, the lunch set is great value with a solid lineup, so my mom and I went back.

This time we ordered two galbisal lunch sets, one serving of galbi bon-samgyeop, and separately added mengnan-bap (pollack roe rice), which my mom loves — a proper feast.

## Back at the City Hall Station BBQ spot with mom

Geumseong Hoegwan really stands out even among the restaurants near City Hall Station. The sign is done in black and gold with a big crown logo, so I could spot it from far away.

There's a big menu board posted outside, and it looked like there was good foreign-language signage too, since there were quite a few foreign customers.

This wasn't my first visit — I came back with my mom. If a place is just okay, I don't bother going again, but here I especially liked the lunch set lineup, so I came back.

## Where the name Geumseong Hoegwan comes from: Geumseong in Naju

Apparently the 'Geumseong (錦城)' in Geumseong Hoegwan comes from the old name for Naju, in Jeollanam-do. Naju has long been known for its abundant food, especially its famous Naju pears.

Geumseong Hoegwan uses the subtle sweetness and umami of these Naju pears to make a special sauce that goes well with the meat. The crown logo you see all over the restaurant is also said to represent treating every guest with dignity. I thought it was just a name, but there's actually a brand story behind it.

## Geumseong Hoegwan signature menu and side dish prices

It's great that Geumseong Hoegwan serves both beef and pork. The signature menu items are:

- Nunkkotsal — beopjinsal (flank) grilled to melt-in-your-mouth softness
- Galbi bon-samgyeop — galbi cut, sliced and chilled to develop meaty flavor and chewy texture
- Yangnyeom so-wanggalbi — Prime-grade beef galbi seasoned with Naju pear syrup
- Hanwoo yukhoe — hanwoo beef tartare tossed in a special sauce and topped with egg yolk

The side dishes are pretty varied too.

- Pork skin ₩10,000
- Kimchi jjigae ₩7,000
- Sundubu jjigae ₩7,000
- Doenjang jjigae ₩5,000
- Mengnan-bap ₩5,000
- Hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap ₩12,000
- Hanwoo yukhoe naengmyeon ₩12,000
- Geumseong mul naengmyeon ₩7,000
- Geumseong bibim naengmyeon ₩7,000
- Spicy chapaghetti ₩6,000

## Inside Geumseong Hoegwan: smarter and cleaner than expected

Walk in and the vibe is a bit weightier and more upscale than a typical BBQ joint. It's decked out in dark wood tones with gold lighting and even chandeliers, giving it a fairly glamorous overall look.

Every table has its own grill and hood, so grilling was easy. There are plenty of seats too, so it seemed good not just for lunch but for company dinners or group gatherings. It was nice that the place was clean for a visit with my mom. During the lunch peak, the restaurant fills right up.

### Review event and reservation perks at Geumseong Hoegwan

The restaurant runs a Naver review event too. Writing a review gets you perks like yukhoe, pork, naengmyeon, doenjang jjigae, a bowl of rice, or a drink.

There were also several coupons listed for booking through Naver Reservations — things like ttukbaegi steamed egg, yukhoe or hanwoo yuksashimi depending on party size, and drinks. Worth checking the Naver Reservations page for current coupons before you go.

## Why we came back: the galbisal lunch set for two

Galbisal lunch set for two ₩28,000 + galbi bon-samgyeop ₩19,000 + mengnan-bap ₩5,000. The biggest reason I came back here is the lunch set. We ordered two galbisal sets again this time.

Order the lunch set and you don't just get meat — it comes with rice and sundubu jjigae too. It's actually a decent amount. These days at a BBQ place, if you order meat, then rice separately, then stew separately, the bill adds up fast. But here, ordering the lunch set gets you meat + rice + sundubu jjigae all in one go, so it makes for a complete meal.

The lunch set is genuinely great value.

### The banchan (side dishes) that come first

The banchan (side dishes) are kimchi, seaweed salad, corn, and aged kimchi. The kimchi here is genuinely delicious too.

### Sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) included with the lunch set

The lunch set also comes with sundubu jjigae. It's served bubbling in its own pot, and the tofu chunks are generously sized.

While eating meat, you naturally start craving something hot and spicy midway through, and a spoonful of sundubu jjigae hits the spot. Rice comes with it too, so the combo of a piece of meat → a spoonful of rice → sundubu jjigae makes for a proper lunch.

Note that the sundubu has chili oil in it, so my mom said it was a bit spicy — just a heads-up.

It even comes with a fried egg, so honestly you could eat this alone without any meat and still call it a meal!

## The main event: galbisal and galbi bon-samgyeop

Enter the good-looking galbisal and pork belly!

![Plated raw galbisal and galbi bon-samgyeop](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal-13-6hcnr-900.webp)

Mom gets beef, I get pork~~~ Love that we can both eat what we want together.

They also brought out king oyster mushroom, zucchini, scallion, cheongyang pepper, and tomato to grill alongside the meat. The king oyster mushrooms were especially huge. Grilled in the meat drippings, they came out moist and delicious. Grilled veggies alongside the meat definitely cut the greasiness compared to eating meat non-stop.

The vegetables were so good we ordered an extra plate haha.

## Myeongnan-bap (pollack roe rice) 5,000 won, my mom's favourite

We also separately ordered mengnan-bap (pollack roe rice) for ₩5,000. Even though the lunch set already comes with rice, the reason we got another is simple — my mom loves mengnan-bap. Haha.

Mengnan-bap comes with a generous amount of pollack roe, seaweed flakes, and scallion piled on top of the rice — it looks amazingly delicious too.

Mix it all together well and the salty pollack roe blends with the seaweed and scallion, and it pairs nicely with the grilled meat too.

My mom finished her mengnan-bap before the meat even fully cooked, haha. Should I make her a mukbang YouTuber?

If you like pollack roe, this is definitely worth adding as a side. There was definitely mengnan-bap here a second ago... now there isn't haha.

## Grilling galbisal and pork belly together on the charcoal

The beef galbisal isn't cooked too long — just grilled to medium — while the thick galbi bon-samgyeop is grilled nice and golden on the side until fully cooked. With galbisal on one side and galbi bon-samgyeop on the other, the grill looked pretty hearty and full. We grilled king oyster mushroom, zucchini, and scallion alongside it too.

![Galbisal and galbi bon-samgyeop grilling together on the pan](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal-21-j5a01-m-900.webp)

![Grill loaded with meat and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal-22-f3b4x-891.webp)

Galbisal is soft and juicy, while galbi bon-samgyeop is nutty and chewy — so switching back and forth between beef and pork was part of the fun. Especially with vegetables grilled golden in the pork belly fat, they went great with the meat.

This was my first time trying galbi bon-samgyeop, and the thick pork belly with the bone still attached and clear layers of fat and meat looked amazingly appetizing. It's grilled fully on the pan, then cut into bite-sized pieces. I like my pork belly with a slightly crispy exterior, and this galbi bon-samgyeop, grilled golden on the outside, was delicious that way.

![Galbi bon-samgyeop grilled golden on the outside](https://img.superchart.com/images/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal/seoul-city-hall-lunch-set-galbisal-23-eyh1p-900.webp)

Chewy yet nutty in the fatty parts — switching from galbisal to pork gave a whole different flavor experience. Best of all, being able to eat beef and pork together at one table is a real plus. The meat disappeared fast!

## Is Geumseong Hoegwan worth a repeat lunch visit?

There are plenty of places worth visiting once, but there's always a real reason behind the places you revisit with your mom. It has to suit her taste, it can't be too loud or uncomfortable, and it has to be filling.

At Geumseong Hoegwan Seoul City Hall Direct Branch, ordering the lunch set gets you galbisal with rice and sundubu jjigae, making for a solid lunch, and if that's not enough, you can add on more meat like galbi bon-samgyeop. Plus with mengnan-bap, which my mom loves, the menu combo was perfect for us.

If you're near Seoul City Hall or City Hall Station and want a proper meat lunch — especially one that's filling with rice and stew too — I'd recommend the lunch set. FYI, the pork skin here is also delicious haha.
