## In short

Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi takeout shop on the first floor of the Gakmol sales building at Garak Market in Songpa, Seoul. On a busy Saturday afternoon, a small mixed platter of sea bass, flounder and red sea bream took about 20 minutes to prepare and came in an insulated shopping bag with plenty of ice packs plus soy sauce, chogochujang, wasabi and ssamjang. The thick-cut live-fish sashimi from Yeongjae Susan suited traditional Korean liquor and was just the right amount for two.

A takeout sashimi review from a fish shop at Gakmol, Garak Market

I wanted fresh sashimi to take home cheaply in Seoul, so I headed to Garak Market, where seafood from all over the country pours in. There are so many sashimi shops there that I had trouble deciding, but I ended up going to Yeongjae Susan, which has a wide variety of fish and packs everything neatly for eating at home. The shop was full of mixed platters and seasonal live shrimp, gizzard shad, and blue crab, so here's my detailed review of packing a mixed sashimi platter at Yeongjae Susan at Gakmol, Garak Market.

## Where is Yeongjae Susan at Gakmol, Garak Market?

Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi shop in Unit C-10 on the first floor of the Gakmol sales building. All kinds of fresh seafood caught around the country come through auctions to Garak Market, so Gakmol is naturally the place I go whenever I want cheap, fresh sashimi.

This time I wanted to enjoy sashimi with my husband over a drink at home, so I came back to Gakmol to pack some sashimi to go. Among the many sashimi shops, I picked Yeongjae Susan because the packing is neat and there's a wide variety of fish.

## Yeongjae Susan's tanks and seasonal seafood on a Saturday afternoon

I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and there was quite a crowd gathered in front of Yeongjae Susan — people were out shopping for seasonal seafood that's good to eat as early fall (September) sets in. The fish tanks were kept clean, and the gizzard shad, live shrimp, and blue crabs all looked lively and fresh even to the naked eye.

We were there for the mixed sashimi platter this time, but seeing how big and fresh the gizzard shad and live shrimp looked, I thought to myself that I'd have to come back for those next time.

## How Yeongjae Susan prices its platters, and how long the wait was

At Yeongjae Susan, prices are fixed by the type and size of the mixed platter, so there's no worry about prices being different — you just pick what you want, which made things easy. You can take the sashimi home, or eat it right away at a restaurant inside Gakmol for just the table-setting fee, so either option works.

There were quite a lot of customers that day, so even though orders were sliced in order as they came in, it still took about 20 minutes. The sashimi came packed in an insulated shopping bag, which made it easy and comfortable to carry home.

## How the Garak Market sashimi was packed: ice packs and four sauces

Yeongjae Susan, a well-known sashimi shop at Garak Market, packed in plenty of ice packs too, so I got it home nice and fresh. They also included soy sauce, chogochujang, wasabi, and ssamjang along with the mixed platter, so there was nothing else to prepare — I realized this would also be convenient for a camping trip or a stay at a pension.

### Sea bass, flounder and red sea bream platter (small): enough for two?

Yeongjae Susan had all kinds of mixed sashimi platters, and we chose the sea bass, flounder, and red sea bream combination. Even though we picked the small size out of Mini / Small / Medium / Large / Extra-large, the portion was generous enough to feel just right for two people, which made me think this is a great-value sashimi shop.

We picked this sashimi takeout spot at Garak Market because we wanted to enjoy sashimi with traditional liquor on a weekend evening, and Yeongjae Susan sliced the fish nice and thick, which gave it a great texture.

The red sea bream, flounder, and sea bass all had no fishy taste at all — the more we chewed, the more that distinctive sweetness of good sashimi came through, and the freshness only got more noticeable the more we ate.

The bouncy, chewy texture you'd expect from live-fish sashimi was so good, and it paired perfectly with traditional liquor as a side dish. Thanks to the mixed platter we packed from Yeongjae Susan, my husband and I had a really cozy, delicious dinner that night.

## Final thoughts on sashimi takeout at Yeongjae Susan

Yeongjae Susan is a great sashimi takeout shop at Garak Market — the packing is neat, and they load in plenty of ice packs, so it's a good place to buy from whether you're heading home, camping, or staying at a pension. I left satisfied with being able to buy a generous, fresh mixed sashimi platter at an affordable price.
