Robatayaki is called “robatayaki (炉端焼き)” in Japanese, and they say the name comes from “robata,” meaning a hearth. It is easy to think of it as Japanese charcoal-grill cooking, with fish, skewers, vegetables, and more cooked around a hearth. By subway, go straight 90 m from Exit 1 of Saetgang Station and turn right for 200 m; from Exit 5 of Yeouido Station, go straight 150 m and turn right for 450 m. Parking is available in the Seorin Building parking lot. ## The robatayaki feeling done right: robata counter seats The robata counter seats where we sat could fit about eight people. Because you can watch the skewers being grilled right in front of you, I personally want to recommend the counter seats. We also knew the counter was the way to properly enjoy robatayaki, so we reserved one in advance. The wooden bar counter and soft lighting went beautifully together, and watching the skewers cook one by one over the hearth made for quite a nice atmosphere. It even gave me a little bit of that feeling of walking into an izakaya for dinner while traveling in Japan. There were two skewers of five ginkgo nuts each. Ginkgo nuts can cause toxic symptoms, so you should eat no more than 10 a day. The butter-grilled shrimp were small, but there were two skewers, so we happily had one each. And one that I thought was chicken, but had a chewy texture like cartilage? I am not sure what it was. The chicken skewers had a subtle spicy kick, which made them even tastier. ## Mero grilled fish like you would get at an upscale izakaya Mero grilled fish is the only grilled fish my husband, who does not really like grilled fish, enjoys.
