## In short

Dambaek Jujeom is a Korean restaurant-bar in an alley six minutes' walk from Sangsu Station Exit 1 in Mapo, Seoul. One order of suyuk (boiled pork) mixed pork belly and pork jowl, half and half, and spicy octopus stir-fry with rice balls plus beer turned dinner and drinks into one sitting. The mild suyuk and the sharp, spicy octopus balanced each other well enough to stay interesting to the last bite.

Dambaek Jujeom serves a wide range of Korean dishes alongside drinks. Near Sangsu Station, it's a great spot for tidy Korean-style snacks with a cold beer, and I finally made it there.

Tucked inside an alley, it wasn't too loud — a calm place to have a drink. Since I wanted a proper meal too, I went full course: pork belly suyuk, pork jowl suyuk, spicy octopus stir-fry with rice balls, and cold beer!

The balance between the tender meat and the spicy seasoning was spot on. Here's my full review of Dambaek Jujeom.

### What Dambaek Jujeom looks like outside and inside

Parking is tough at Dambaek Jujeom, so I'd recommend the subway. It's a 6-minute walk from Sangsu Station Exit 1, so it's not hard to find!

A rather solemn-looking company motto hanging on the wall haha.

Seating is all tables — there are 2-seaters and 4-seaters, so it looked good for friends, couples, family meals, or bigger group gatherings too.

## What's on the menu at Dambaek Jujeom

Here's the menu.

![Suyuk menu board at Dambaek Jujeom](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball-07-t5cas-900.webp)

The main dish at Dambaek Jujeom, suyuk (boiled pork), comes in pork belly and pork jowl. It's also served at lunch, so office workers nearby or anyone visiting Hongdae, Sangsu, or Hapjeong who wants a clean Korean-style spread should give it a try. (Fun fact: ordering suyuk also gets you kalguksu, knife-cut noodle soup.) There are desserts and sides too, so I genuinely spent a while deciding what to order.

## Half-and-half pork belly and pork jowl suyuk with beer

Since I came for a proper meal, I ordered quite a lot — and since it's a bar, of course—

...beer first.

Pork belly suyuk / pork jowl suyuk (₩16,000/₩18,000). Suyuk requires a minimum order of 2 servings, but they said mixing is fine, so I ordered one of each!

![Wrap greens and salted shrimp served with the suyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball-12-1c1u6-900.webp)

Wrap greens, salted shrimp, and a bunch of side dishes came out. Random fact, but I love mumallaengi (dried radish strips) — Dambaek Jujeom's version was crisp and chewy, and I finished the whole bowl, haha.

![Two servings of suyuk served in a steamer](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball-14-1cahq-900.webp)

Just look at that glossy sheen. The portion was bigger than I expected, so if you're ordering it as a bar snack rather than a full meal like I was, you'll definitely be satisfied with the amount!

![A piece of pork jowl suyuk wrapped in a leaf](https://img.superchart.com/images/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball/dambaek-jujeom-sangsu-spicy-octopus-rice-ball-16-1emgn-900.webp)

Both pork belly and pork jowl are fairly fatty cuts, but maybe because they're steamed this way, there was surprisingly no greasy aftertaste — just clean and tender. Really interesting.

Oh, and for the kalguksu — if you lift off that steamer frame, there's broth underneath you can eat it in! I was too busy eating to properly document it as a food blogger should... a bit embarrassed.

## How spicy is the octopus stir-fry with rice balls?

Spicy octopus stir-fry with rice balls (₩22,000). Smoky, wok-charred octopus with two big rice balls. If you can't handle Shin Ramyun, think twice — it's spicier than expected.

Scoop up the rice, pile the octopus on top, and eat — ah, seriously delicious. Though I'm not sure what that green vegetable was. Perilla leaf, maybe? The aroma was amazing, I remember that much.

## Is Dambaek Jujeom worth a visit? Final verdict

Moist, tender pork belly suyuk with no funky smell, chewy pork jowl suyuk, and the spicy, punchy combo of octopus stir-fry and rice balls to cut through any potential greasiness — Dambaek Jujeom really delivered. A sip of cold beer on top matched perfectly with the food.

Overall the seasoning wasn't harsh at all — clean and dambaek (plain/light), just like the name — so I finished everything to the last bite without getting tired of it.

If you're near Sangsu Station looking for a solid Korean-style bar with quality snacks, or a comfortable place to handle dinner and drinks in one go, I recommend Dambaek Jujeom. (Especially for fellow Korean-food lovers like me.)
