## In short

Joajukne Jjukkumi is a spicy baby octopus (jjukkumi) restaurant in the Sangbong food alley in Jungnang, Seoul. On a weekday at 4:30pm the writer took a full-window seat and ordered two servings of jjukkumi with a side of thin dumplings and flying fish roe fried rice, and the side dish they reached for most was perilla leaf ssam topped with the roe served as a standard banchan. The spice level suits most palates, and Joajukne Jjukkumi sends you off with free ice cream after the meal.

I'd been craving something spicy lately, and I heard that a jjukkumi (spicy baby octopus) restaurant had won the Grand Prize in the Korean Food category at the 2026 Korea Brand Media Awards. So I made my way to Joajukne Jjukkumi (조아죽네쭈꾸미) in the Sangbong food alley.

I paired the plump baby octopus with thin, crispy dumplings, and finished off with flying fish roe fried rice. The spice level suited my taste perfectly, and the ice cream they gave after the meal was a nice memorable touch.

We visited on a weekday around 4:30pm. With its white exterior and full glass windows, it wasn't hard to spot from the alley.

There were waiting chairs and a sign-up list out front, but since we arrived in the early evening, we walked right in without waiting.

The standing sign outside announced the 'Grand Prize in Korean Food' at the 2026 awards, and an 'Excellence Award in Seafood' from the 2026 Korea Consumer Industry Awards. We could also check out the lunch specials, menu, and a short intro to the restaurant from outside.

A rabbit statue by the entrance also caught my eye — the cute rabbit was holding dental floss, mouthwash, and deodorant. A thoughtful little detail, having post-meal essentials ready to go.

![White-and-wood interior with four-person tables along the window](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-07-c8kx8-900.webp)

![Round tables further inside with an old-school outdoor feel](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-08-1v110-900.webp)

Inside, it was decorated cleanly in white and wood tones. Up front, four tables for four sat along the window, while further in were four round tables with an old-school outdoor restaurant feel.

The mood shifts depending on where you sit, even within the same restaurant, so it's fun to pick a spot based on the vibe you want. We sat by the window with the outside view.

A projector on the wall was showing a sports match. On a day with a big match on, having spicy jjukkumi with beer instead of the usual chimaek (fried chicken and beer) — 'jjukmaek' — sounded pretty good. The self-serve bar was also kept tidy, with lids covering the food.

## Joajukne Jjukkumi menu and how to order

![Restaurant intro noting the use of premium grade-1 baby octopus](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-10-1nrny-900.webp)

You order via the tablet on the table. According to the restaurant's intro, they use premium grade-1 baby octopus and don't age it, to preserve the natural flavor. The sauce apparently has 26 ingredients in it — I was curious what kind of spicy it would turn out to be.

![Menu board for the spicy jjukkumi-bulgogi hot pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-11-9qtlm-900.webp)

The menu is broadly divided into spicy jjukkumi-bulgogi hot pot, sets, and à la carte. There are also sides, extra noodles/rice cakes, fried rice, and drinks. Sets and à la carte items are priced per person, and sets come with house-made sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and various add-ins.

This time we went with the à la carte jjukkumi and added the sides we wanted.

Fried rice and ice cream don't need to be ordered up front — you can order them separately whenever you feel like it.

## Free after-meal service, no review required

Separate from any review event, Joajukne Jjukkumi has a standing post-meal service. You can choose one of ice cream, a hangover remedy, or a digestive aid, with ice cream limited to one per table. Just order it via the tablet whenever you want.

The iced Americano offered for review participation is a separate thing. I liked that you don't have to write a review just to get the ice cream.

## Flying fish roe comes with the basic banchan

The basic table setting included ssam vegetables, pickled radish, mayo sauce, flying fish roe, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and garlic. What I personally appreciated was that the flying fish roe came included as a standard side — some places make you add it separately, but here it was there from the start, ready to go straight into the octopus wraps.

There were also fresh chili peppers for anyone who wanted it spicier. The base seasoning already suited my taste, so we skipped those.

## Jjukkumi for two, stir-fried at the table by staff

After a bit, our two servings of jjukkumi arrived. The portion was more generous than I expected, and even before cooking, the octopus looked big and plump — promising.

A staff member cooked it for us right at the table. It was easy — they just told us when it was ready to eat. I also noticed their care in shielding the sauce with their hand so it wouldn't splatter while stirring.

As it cooked, the spicy sauce blended through evenly, and watching it made me even hungrier.

![Finished spicy jjukkumi stir-fried by staff](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-14-z3y5a-900.webp)

I tried a piece of the finished jjukkumi first. The flesh was thick with good chew, but not tough, and the sauce suited my taste well.

### How spicy is the jjukkumi?

I'm the type who can eat Shin Ramyun comfortably but finds Buldak Bokkeummyeon a bit much. This was a spice level I could enjoy — though by the end, my mouth did feel a little numb from it. Worth keeping in mind if you're sensitive to spice.

![Perilla leaf ssam topped with pickled radish and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-16-tb5ao-900.webp)

![A bite of jjukkumi ssam with mayo sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-18-1plnr-900.webp)

### Perilla leaf ssam topped with flying fish roe

It's good eaten plain, but wrapping it in a ssam gave a whole different flavor. Layer pickled radish, vegetables, roe, and octopus on a perilla leaf, and the spice gets a boost of tang and a pop of texture from the roe. A little dab of mayo sauce makes it smoother, too.

This was the dish I kept reaching for most — the roe-topped perilla ssam. If you're thinking of visiting for the Sangbong-dong jjukkumi hype, be sure to try the roe-topped ssam too.

## Thin dumpling side: when to eat it

The three dumplings we'd added came out partway through cooking. They were much thinner than the typical yaki-mandu you'd see at instant tteokbokki spots. I love thin, crispy dumplings like this, so I felt good about the choice as soon as I saw them.

Once the octopus was done cooking, the staff mixed the dumplings in too — I ate mine before they went fully soft. With some crispness still left, the sauce soaking in made them delicious even on their own. Topped with octopus, vegetables, and roe, each bite got even richer.

If you like a crispy texture, don't wait too long once they're in the sauce.

## Save room for the flying fish roe fried rice

After working through most of the octopus, we ordered the flying fish roe fried rice. Coming for a spicy stir-fry dish and skipping the fried rice would've been a shame.

![Jjukkumi fried rice generously topped with flying fish roe](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-19-nfqze-900.webp)

The staff made the fried rice for us too — snipping the leftover octopus into small pieces with scissors, stir-frying it with the rice, spreading it out flat, and piling roe generously on top.

The octopus sauce was evenly soaked into the rice, and every spoonful had a pop of roe. Bits of chopped octopus mixed in kept it tasty right to the end.

Even after working hard on the ssam and dumplings beforehand, somehow there was still room for the fried rice. Out of everything we had that day, this is the dish I'd order again without hesitation.

## Ice cream to cool the burn

![Two scoops of vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-20-1yujb-900.webp)

![Free post-meal ice cream served at the table](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-21-l8zri-900.webp)

By the time we finished, my mouth was a little numb from the spice, so we ordered the free ice cream. They gave us two scoops of vanilla with chocolate syrup drizzled on top. I expected a throwaway freebie, but it was better than I thought.

To my taste, it had a rich, smooth flavor that reminded me of Toogether ice cream, and the chocolate syrup paired well with it. After the spicy octopus and fried rice, it was cool and sweet — the perfect finish.

## Is Joajukne Jjukkumi in Sangbong worth a return visit?

![Interior view with the front windows opened wide](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-22-1too2-900.webp)

![Table after finishing the meal at Joajukne Jjukkumi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam/jjukkumi-sangbong-flying-fish-roe-ssam-24-1qmm2-900.webp)

I visited Joajukne Jjukkumi out of curiosity after hearing about their award, but what stuck with me after eating was the plump, tender octopus and how well the sauce suited my taste.

The roe included as a standard side made the wraps even better, and with the thin dumplings and roe fried rice added in, the two of us left well fed. The friendly tableside cooking and the free post-meal ice cream were both satisfying too.

As we were leaving, they'd opened the front windows wide, giving the space a completely different feel than when we first walked in — a sense of openness connecting to the outside, which would be great for spicy octopus and a beer on a cool evening.

Next time I'd like to try the lunch special, and maybe pair the evening set with sungnyung and a beer. If you're after a spicy dinner with jjukkumi in the Sangbong area, this one's worth checking out. I'll probably order the thin dumplings and roe fried rice again next time too.
