Dongtan North Plaza seafood pub for steamed live blue crab: Susanjang

In short

Susanjang Dongtan Branch (수산장 동탄점) is a newly opened Japanese-style pub serving seasonal seafood on Dongtan North Plaza in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Arriving for the 5 p.m. Sunday dinner opening, the writer ordered flatfish sashimi with salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll), Susanjang steamed live blue crab and gyedu ramyeon (Shin Ramyun with two eggs) for 79,400 won in total, with grilled flounder served as the complimentary side dish. The flatfish sashimi and steamed live blue crab made a satisfying pair, so Susanjang Dongtan Branch suits anyone who wants raw fish and warm seafood in one meal.

I visited Susanjang Dongtan Branch (수산장 동탄점), which just opened on Dongtan North Plaza 🐟 Maybe because it's new, it was pretty popular.

Guests kept coming in even at the 5 p.m. Sunday dinner opening, so if you go on a weekend, I recommend booking through Naver. If you're looking for a good spot on Dongtan North Plaza, it seemed worth a visit.

I went right at dinner opening, but there may be a wait on weekends, so I recommend reserving on Naver before you go!

We didn't come for lunch specials; we came at the 5 p.m. Sunday dinner opening. As we were leaving, I saw a few groups on the Catchtable waitlist! It's clearly a popular place.

  • Steamed live blue crab ₩28,500
  • Gyedu ramyeon (Shin Ramyun with two eggs) ₩6,000

Free starter of grilled flounder at Susanjang Dongtan Branch

Grilled flounder as the free starter

Oh, first: I liked that Susanjang Dongtan Branch serves grilled flounder as the free starter. Getting that before the sashimi is surprisingly filling, haha.

Picking the meat off the warm grilled flounder was a nice way to wait for the food, and it felt like a proper starter for a seafood place, which I loved.

🐟 How was the flatfish sashimi + salt gimbap?

First, the flatfish sashimi + salt gimbap! The sashimi was clean overall with a nice springy bite. Each piece had the mild, clean flavor flatfish is known for, and I barely noticed any fishy taste, so it was easy to eat.

Flatfish sashimi with a springy texture

Eating only raw fish can get a little bland, but the salt gimbap served alongside made a great combo.

The nutty seaweed plus the salted rice went surprisingly well with a slice of flatfish on top, haha. Personally, it was the most basic yet most satisfying dish of everything we ordered that day.

So if you're hunting for aged sashimi in Dongtan and want raw fish as your main, the sashimi is a fine choice.

🦀 How was the steamed live blue crab?

And the one I'd been looking forward to: the steamed live blue crab (₩28,500)! It looked delicious from the first glance 🦀

Warm steamed blue crab meat

When I picked out the meat, it was tender and sweet, and seafood really is great when it's steamed warm like this. Picking the crab meat was fun too, so it's a nice dish to sit and eat slowly.

Picking the meat from the steamed blue crab

I especially liked the crab's clean, subtly sweet flavor. It felt different from the sashimi, and I was glad we ordered both. If you want warm seafood as well as raw fish at a North Plaza restaurant in Dongtan, I'd recommend the steamed crab too.

🍜 Finishing with gyedu ramyeon (Shin Ramyun with two eggs)

Gyedu ramyeon, Shin Ramyun with two eggs

Lastly, I wanted some broth, so I ordered the Shin Ramyun gyedu ramyeon (₩6,000)! As the name says, it's Shin Ramyun-style noodles with two eggs, and the spicy broth with egg was great for sipping a spoonful here and there between seafood bites 🍜

The eggs made the spicy, salty ramyeon broth feel a little smoother, and I thought it would also work as a side dish when drinking. After only sashimi and crab, adding ramyeon definitely made it feel like a full meal, haha.
