## In short

Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch is a sushi restaurant on basement level 1 of the Tower8 building in Jongno, Seoul, connected directly to the Jongak Station underground passage. The writer went after work with her cousin and ordered the 17-piece geuksang sushi set with scallop and king shrimp tempura: the squid-and-ankimo sushi was the top pick, while the crab sushi fell flat because of its soft, wet texture. With everything from solo seats to tables for four, Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch is an easy call for lunch or dinner for anyone working in Jongno.

Hi, it's Dadass :) My cousin and I decided to grab dinner after work, and we went to Choe Uyeong Sushiya, a sushi restaurant that apparently just opened in her office building near Jongak Station 🍣 I heard Jongno office workers who'd been waiting for a good sushi spot were already dropping by for lunch right after it opened.

## How to get to Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch by subway, car or on foot

Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch is on the basement floor of the Tower8 building, connected directly to the underground passage from Jongak Station Exit 1. If you're driving, the building offers 2 hours of free parking, which is great news for anyone looking for a Jongno restaurant with parking.

![Way to Choe Uyeong Sushiya on B1 of the Tower8 building](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-03-bw130-900.webp)

- By subway 🚊 Head toward Jongak Station Exit 1 and follow the underground passage — it connects straight through. You'll pass Starfield Avenue Grand Jongno on the way. Coming from Gwanghwamun Station, use Exit 2!
- By car — 2 hours free parking in the Choe Uyeong Sushiya building lot
- On foot/by bus 🚶🏻‍♀️ Go down the stairs across from Jimmy John's on the 1st floor of the Tower8 building, and you'll find Choe Uyeong Sushiya right there on B1. Or take the elevator down from next to the Baskin Robbins Gwanghwamun branch — it's on the right once you're on B1.

I had no idea what I was doing and ended up taking the last route, but there are so many ways to get there that it was easy to find.

## Inside Choe Uyeong Sushiya: solo seats and tables for team dinners

![Interior seating at Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-04-6x4z8-900.webp)

Since it's in an area full of office workers, the seating covers a wide range of group sizes — solo seats for people eating alone, as well as tables for four or more for teams eating together.

## Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch menu: kaisendon and assorted sushi

![Menu board for kaisendon and sushi at Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-06-1kkn0-900.webp)

![Menu board for mixed sushi with size options](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-07-126ol-900.webp)

Kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) and sushi are the signature menu items. You can choose your size, so it's adjustable depending on the situation and number of people.

![Menu board listing à la carte sushi prices](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-08-1iau0-900.webp)

You can also order à la carte sushi by price range, from ₩1,000s up to ₩3,000. I wanted to try a variety of good-quality sushi, so I ordered the geuksang (premium) sushi set.

![Sashimi menu board at Choe Uyeong Sushiya](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-09-gdibg-900.webp)

There's also a sashimi menu that goes great with drinks. Having tried the sushi here, I can say every type of sashimi was fresh and delicious. Nobody asked (?), but if I had to pick just from the sashimi menu, I'd go with cuttlefish sashimi with added ankimo (monkfish liver), plus tuna belly sashimi...

![Side menu board for tempura, udon, and braised sea bream](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-10-wluca-900.webp)

The side menu includes tempura, udon, and braised sea bream. Sushi alone felt like it wouldn't be quite enough, so we ordered tempura too.

A good lunch recommendation for Jongno office workers — takeout is also packed neatly, so it'd be great for ordering together as a whole office.

## What comes in the 17-piece geuksang premium sushi set?

The geuksang sushi is the biggest mixed sushi option at Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch, coming with 17 pieces. It ranges from basics like flounder and bluefin tuna to sea urchin and sea cucumber innards gunkan (battleship-style sushi), plus ankimo.

![A full plate of the 17-piece geuksang sushi set](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-11-10fav-900.webp)

This is the geuksang sushi, 17 pieces — the largest piece count among all the mixed sushi options.

- Flounder, salmon, red seabream, bluefin tuna
- Squid + ankimo, red shrimp + sea urchin
- Egg, seasonal sushi, tuna belly
- Sea urchin roe gunkan, sea cucumber innards gunkan, negitoro (chopped fatty tuna)
- Scallop, freshwater eel, crab sushi
- Flounder fin, steamed abalone

![Geuksang sushi set with thick slices of raw fish](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-12-1njer-900.webp)

Priced item by item, this would probably add up to well over ₩33,000 — there was a lot of quality fish here. The slices of raw fish were thick too, so each bite was full and let me properly enjoy the sushi.

![17 pieces of geuksang sushi arranged side by side](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-13-1wkwe-900.webp)

At a glance, there's not a single weak piece in this lineup. Every one of these could hold its own on its own plate. It's already good enough as individual orders, but seeing them all together like this makes it even more appetizing ^^

![Close-up of the geuksang sushi plate](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-14-1my3l-900.webp)

There's nothing here I dislike — every piece looks delicious..

You've got to start sushi with white fish, right? So I started with the flounder — fresh and chewy, just as delicious as expected.

This one seemed to be the seasonal sushi, and it tasted like mullet sashimi.

Sushi with raw shrimp topped with sea urchin — the sea urchin aroma spread through nicely, and the raw shrimp had good texture too.

### Top pick: squid with ankimo; the letdown: crab sushi

Honestly my number-one pick was the squid + ankimo (monkfish liver) 👍🏻 I like ankimo enough that I'll order it as an extra whenever I go to a sushi place, and this Jongno sushi spot's version passed with flying colors — you can also add it to any à la carte sushi for ₩2,000.

The scallop was torched for a smoky flavor, which made its savoriness feel even richer.

The crab sushi — maybe because the crab meat had been frozen and thawed and released some water — was a bit soggy. The texture made it a so-so pick for me.

The trio of gunkan — sea cucumber innards, negitoro, and sea urchin — the sea cucumber innards were rich and delicious. Innards usually need to be super fresh to be edible, and seeing sea urchin appear often too is proof the ingredients here are fresh!

Beyond that, the eel sushi had a big piece of eel on top, and the tuna belly — need I say more? Rich and delicious ><

![Miso soup served alongside the sushi](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-21-v7ehc-900.webp)

They also gave us miso soup, which was nice to cleanse the palate in between bites. If you're looking for a solid sushi restaurant in Jongno, I'd recommend Choe Uyeong Sushiya without hesitation~

## How were the sides, scallop tempura and king shrimp tempura?

We ordered scallop tempura and king shrimp tempura as sides at Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch. The scallops were plump and worth eating, though the batter was on the thick side.

![Scallop tempura and king shrimp tempura ordered as a side](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-22-v10oh-900.webp)

This is the tempura we ordered as a side — scallop and shrimp tempura.

![Plate of tempura served with dipping soy sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo/choiwooyoung-sushiya-jongno-underground-access-ankimo-23-18ol2-900.webp)

They were kind of funny because they were a bit small.. so I cut them up with scissors to make them easier to eat.

The scallops especially were plump and worth eating. There was a separate soy sauce made for the tempura, which made it even tastier! The batter was on the thicker side — I wish it had been a little thinner and crispier.
