## In short

Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon is a buckwheat specialty restaurant in Bongpyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang, Gangwon, where the buckwheat noodles are pressed on site every day from a blend of bitter and sweet buckwheat. On a Friday at 1pm in September, during the buckwheat flower festival, Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon was nearly full but had no wait, and the order was the 82% buckwheat yukhoe bibim noodles (raw beef cold noodles), buckwheat sprout bulgogi bibimbap and handmade buckwheat pancake rolls. The mild, never overseasoned buckwheat dishes and the country-style table with squash leaves and seaweed soup made it a satisfying stop.

## Driving to the Bongpyeong buckwheat flower festival: any wait at 1pm on a Friday?

Stopped by the Bongpyeong buckwheat festival on the way to Pyeongchang. But food comes before flowers, so I decided to grab lunch at Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon, a local favorite in Bongpyeong 😉

I'd heard weekends here mean insane waits, so I was glad I came on a Friday instead. No wait at 1pm on Friday, but the place was almost completely full! Since it's September and the buckwheat flower festival is in full swing, weekends probably mean a long wait — though the dining space is spacious and turnover is quick given the food, so it seems manageable.

Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon, a favorite among locals, is also known for an Edward Lee visit — apparently it's run by a master craftsman renowned for Pyeongchang's signature local dish, buckwheat cuisine. You can taste the buckwheat cooking of a certified Korean culinary master right on location, so it's well worth a stop on a trip through Gangwon-do!

## What to order at Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon

![Buckwheat menu board at Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-04-3ggby-900.webp)

Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon is a buckwheat specialty restaurant whose main dish is buckwheat noodles, hand-milled on site every day from a blend of bitter and sweet buckwheat, alongside buckwheat sprout bibimbap, buckwheat pancakes, and buckwheat pancake rolls.

![Migayeon's basic banchan spread made with Gangwon-do wild greens](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-05-1mpr7-900.webp)

Migayeon serves seasonal dishes that capture the four seasons of Bongpyeong, and even the basic banchan (side dishes) here — made by hand from wild greens grown in Gangwon-do's mountains and fields — are genuinely tasty.

### 82% buckwheat yukhoe bibim noodles with raw beef

82% pure buckwheat yukhoe bibim noodles 🐮 bibim noodles topped generously with nutty perilla powder, bitter buckwheat sprouts, and fresh Daegwallyeong hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe (raw seasoned beef).

The yukhoe, made with fresh hanwoo raised in Pyeongchang's Daegwallyeong, is piled on generously, and its nutty, chewy texture pairs beautifully with the buckwheat's soft yet firm bite.

![Self-milled 100% pure buckwheat noodles lifted after mixing](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-07-5u8r5-900.webp)

Made from a blend of bitter and sweet buckwheat, the 100% pure buckwheat noodles are self-milled on site, giving them rich umami, a distinct buckwheat aroma, and a soft texture — nuttier and chewier the more you chew. The seasoning on the noodles isn't overly sweet or spicy, so the beef's umami and the buckwheat's clean flavor really come through, with a subtle addictiveness that makes you want to keep eating. The bitter buckwheat sprouts seem to add fresh flavor and aroma, upgrading the whole dish!

### Buckwheat sprout bulgogi bibimbap, mild enough to eat without sauce

Buckwheat sprout bulgogi bibimbap 🌱 bulgogi (marinated beef) bibimbap with zucchini, potato, egg garnish, radish salad, and buckwheat sprouts.

![Bulgogi bibimbap seasoned with a soy-sauce base](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-09-45xr6-900.webp)

It comes lightly seasoned with a soy-sauce base, and they'll give you gochujang (red chili paste) on the side if you want it, but eating it plain, without extra sauce, seems to taste much better.

![A mixed bowl of buckwheat sprout bulgogi bibimbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-10-3dp02-900.webp)

The shredded potato and zucchini bring a subtle sweetness while keeping things clean and light, and the combination of nutty bulgogi with the bitter buckwheat sprouts is genuinely appealing! It looks like a common dish, but I'd never had this exact flavor and texture anywhere else, so I really enjoyed it. I feel like I could eat this every day 😋

![Seaweed soup served alongside the bibimbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-11-hhbxf-900.webp)

![A plate of squash leaves served with the bibimbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-12-ncbx1-900.webp)

The bibimbap comes with squash leaves and seaweed soup on the side, giving it that warm, homey country-table feel that made the meal feel hearty and generous.

Wrapping the mild bibimbap in a slightly bitter squash leaf was also a healthy, satisfying way to eat it 😉

![A plate of handmade buckwheat pancake rolls filled with kimchi](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-14-j5l6f-900.webp)

### Handmade buckwheat pancake rolls filled with house-made kimchi

Buckwheat pancake rolls (memiljeonbyeong). Handmade buckwheat pancake rolls filled with finely chopped homemade kimchi. The clean buckwheat wrapper paired with the spicy filling makes for an appetizing specialty — the texture and flavor are worlds apart from instant buckwheat pancake rolls.

The crunchy kimchi filling pairs wonderfully with the soft, chewy buckwheat wrapper — it's the perfect side dish to eat alongside the main courses, so I'd recommend ordering it as a companion dish.

## Is Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon worth it, and how to pair it with the buckwheat flower festival?

I'm not usually someone who especially loves or frequently eats buckwheat noodles or buckwheat pancake rolls, but the buckwheat dishes at Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon were genuinely a cut above! The buckwheat noodles and buckwheat sprout bibimbap were mild enough that I wanted more, and the soft buckwheat pancake rolls were satisfying too.

![Festival scene from the 'Find the Golden Buckwheat' event](https://img.superchart.com/images/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap/bongpyeong-migayeon-buckwheat-sprout-bibimbap-19-162zu-900.webp)

After lunch at Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon, we stopped by the buckwheat flower festival. I'd heard this year's flowers weren't as impressive, and honestly they lacked the grandeur I expected, which was a bit disappointing. Still, we happened to catch the 'Find the Golden Buckwheat' event at just the right time, and both my partner and I found golden buckwheat and won prizes — a lucky day 🌟 I'd recommend this as a course: lunch at Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon followed by a quick stroll through the buckwheat flower festival. Thanks for the meal 🤍
