These days I've been eating a lot of Japanese-style tonkatsu, so out of nowhere I started craving old-school Western-style pork cutlet (gyeongyang sikdang donkatsu) piled with sweet sauce. I happened to have something to do in Yongsan, so I looked up a Yongsan pork cutlet spot and ended up at Yongsan Donkatsu Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang, Yongsan branch.

This visit was made with a discount benefit, but I'll be honest about how it actually tasted :) I went alone this time, and the place had a clean, tidy vibe overall, so it wasn't awkward to walk in solo.

What I picked was the udon and pork cutlet (small) for ₩14,500, plus a zero-sugar cider for ₩2,000! I debated just getting the pork cutlet alone, but wanted warm udon too, so I went with the set.

## Is Onjeong a good solo lunch spot in Yongsan?

There were seats set up nicely for solo dining, so I think it's a decent option for anyone nearby looking for a solo lunch spot in Yongsan. (They even have baby seats!)

Everything is domestically sourced!! Even the meat is Korean-grown han-don pork!

## Pre-meal soup, bread and strawberry jam at Onjeong

You can't have a Western-style pork cutlet without the pre-meal soup, right? Onjeong's soup wasn't overly thick and gluey — it had a smooth, easy-drinking consistency. Dipping the bread that came with it lightly into the soup was oddly addictive, I kept reaching for more. And the bread comes with strawberry jam too, so after dipping it in the soup I finished off with jam on the last piece, which felt like stepping back into an old-school gyeongyang sikdang — a small, nice treat.

## How were the batter and the gyeongyang-style sauce?

They say Onjeong uses a steam-injection fryer, and eating it, I could tell — the batter had almost no greasy feel, staying crisp and really nutty-savory. With gyeongyang-style pork cutlet, the sauce sitting right on top often makes the batter go soggy fast or turns heavy as you eat, but here it stayed light and enjoyable right to the end.

This was the dish I was most looking forward to that day — the pork cutlet! What I liked most was the sauce. It wasn't too heavy or aggressively sweet, just gently sweet enough not to overpower the savoriness of the cutlet. I prefer cutlets where the meat, batter and sauce come together in balance rather than ones where only the sauce flavor lingers, and this was exactly that!

### Udon and the tangy-sweet salad sauce

The udon that came with it was warm too, which was nice for taking a sip of broth between bites of the crispy cutlet. Eating just the cutlet alone could feel a bit heavy, but pairing it with udon made the whole meal quite satisfying.

This place really seems to be a sauce specialist~ The salad sauce tasted like it was kiwi or green tangerine based, tangy-sweet. (It was so good I kept asking for more, haha)

## Finishing a one-person meal at Onjeong

The portion was plenty for one person, so I had that satisfying feeling of having had a proper dinner. These days there are plenty of Japanese-style tonkatsu specialty shops, but there are days when you specifically crave that old-school Western-style pork cutlet that comes with soup, bread, strawberry jam and sweet sauce all together. On those days, this Hyochang Park pork cutlet restaurant, Onjeong Gyeongyang Sikdang Yongsan branch, is a good option. It has a relaxed atmosphere for eating alone, so I think it'll come to mind again next time I'm nearby wondering what to have for a solo lunch in Yongsan.

Savory cutlet without any greasy feel, sauce that was sweet without being too much, and soft soup perfect for dipping bread into — I properly got the 'old-school gyeongyang-style pork cutlet meal' I'd been craving, at this Yongsan pork cutlet spot :)
