These days there are a lot of evenings when just heading straight home after work feels like a waste. Looking for somewhere to grab a drink and catch up with a friend, Jjuksami caught my eye — it's often mentioned as one of the go-to spots near Cheonho. The idea of octopus stir-fried together with pork belly got my curiosity going, so I headed over without a reservation. If you're after a spicy side dish to go with a drink, this post should help.

## Getting to Jjuksami Cheonho Main Branch from Exit 6

The restaurant is at 1F, 8 Cheonho-daero158-gil, Gangdong-gu, Seoul. Coming out of Cheonho Station Exit 6, it's about a 130-meter walk straight ahead — the actual distance is 196m, so 3 minutes on foot was plenty. There's barely any turning involved right out of the exit, so it's hard to get lost even on a first visit. The sign was easy to spot even at night.

## What's the atmosphere and seating like

Walking in, maybe because it was dinnertime, about half the tables were already full. The interior wasn't flashy — more of a comfortable, easy-to-sit-and-eat setup, fitting for a drinking spot. The seats were spaced generously, so I didn't have to worry about the neighboring table while chatting, and there was a separate group seating area too, which looked good for a work dinner. The ventilation seemed decent, since the smell from the stir-fried dishes didn't cling too badly to my clothes, which I appreciated.

Every table had a grill set up, and a staff member cooked the food right there for us, so there was no worry about anything burning or undercooking. The kitchen wasn't open to view, but since the cooking happened right on the table, I got a strong sense that the ingredients were fresh. The lighting wasn't too dim for a drinking spot either, so it was decent for photos.

## Menu options and add-ons

Jjuksami's base is octopus stir-fry, but the menu is divided into quite a few combinations. You can choose from the basic octopus stir-fry, pork belly added, octopus+shrimp, or the octopus+shrimp+pork belly we ordered.

- Add-ons: shrimp, pork belly, cheese, steamed egg, cheese rice cake, fried dumplings, bean sprouts, flying fish roe
- Complimentary: spaghetti noodles, glass noodles
- To finish: cheese fried rice, flying fish roe fried rice, cheese + flying fish roe fried rice, plain rice

For fried rice, there's cheese fried rice, flying fish roe fried rice, and the cheese + flying fish roe combo we ordered, plus plain rice on the side, so it was easy to finish the meal however you like. With so many options, I'd recommend mixing and matching add-ons and fried rice depending on your group size and taste.

## Steamed egg, cheese corn, and the basic side dishes

Once seated, the basic side dishes — steamed egg, cheese corn, and perilla leaves — were already set on the table. The steamed egg came in a stone bowl, puffed up hot, with a scattering of chopped scallions on top giving off a savory smell right away. The cheese corn was grilled to a golden brown with slight char marks, and the kernels were so packed in it could've been a side dish on its own.

There were plenty of perilla leaves for wrapping the stir-fry, along with garlic, ssamjang (thick dipping sauce), and mayonnaise so you could mix and match to taste. The basic side dishes alone showed real effort, so I was already satisfied before the main dish even arrived.

## First impression of the octopus, shrimp, pork belly stir-fry

What we ordered was the signature dish: octopus, shrimp, and pork belly stir-fried together. The moment it was set on the grill, you could see how packed with ingredients it was. Plenty of places serve octopus on its own, but a combination that stir-fries shrimp and pork belly in with it isn't common, so I was excited. The sauce color wasn't overly red either — a nice appetizing tone that photographed well.

### Spice level and smoky flavor

The spice level was medium — it might be a bit much for someone who can't handle spicy food at all, but for those who normally enjoy spicy dishes, it's just right. As it kept cooking on the grill, a smoky flavor built up, which subtly made me want a drink. It's spicy enough to work up a bit of a sweat, which naturally makes you reach for something cold or alcoholic. My friend, who can't handle spice well, reached for water a few times but still finished the whole thing.

I didn't get to ask whether they adjust the spice level on request, but the default heat is enjoyable without being overwhelming, so it should work for most people. The balance between the smoky flavor and the spice was good enough that my chopsticks kept going back for more.

### How the octopus, shrimp, and pork belly worked together

Eating it, the chewy texture of the octopus and the rich fattiness of the pork belly came together nicely. The shrimp seemed to have been cooked separately, keeping its plump, bouncy texture intact, so every ingredient felt like it was pulling its weight. The sauce wasn't overpowering but had solid depth of flavor, making it great for mixing into rice or fried rice too. The pork belly also made it more filling than eating octopus alone, which was a plus.

### Plump octopus

Even while cooking on the grill, the octopus stood out for staying plump and full. It wasn't cut into small pieces — the chunky size was kept intact, so every bite felt meaty and thick. Watching it hold its bounce instead of going limp, it seemed like they used carefully prepped fresh octopus rather than frozen. Each piece was decently sized, so just a few bites was enough to fill you up.

### Wrapped in perilla leaves

The stir-fry was tasty on its own, but wrapping it in perilla leaves brought out a different charm. Piling octopus, pork belly, and a clove of garlic onto a leaf and eating it in one bite, the sharp aroma of the perilla leaf paired well with the spicy sauce. A little mayonnaise or ssamjang cut through the richness while boosting the savory flavor even more. Switching things up with the wraps instead of eating it just one way kept it interesting all the way through.

## Finishing with cheese and flying fish roe fried rice

After working through most of the octopus, shrimp, and pork belly stir-fry, we ordered the cheese and flying fish roe fried rice on top. They stir-fried rice in the leftover sauce, then piled on a generous amount of cheese and melted it again on the grill. Watching the cheese melt with the roe popping through looked appetizing at a glance, and the colors turned out vibrant even without an egg yolk on top. The visual alone made it look like a dish worth ordering on its own.

## Who this place is good for

This is a great fit for anyone wanting a spicy side dish with drinks after work. If you want to enjoy octopus, pork belly, and shrimp all at once, this combo dish in particular should hit the spot. The atmosphere is casual enough for a low-key get-together with friends or coworkers, so it's a good option if you're looking for a small group spot. ## Final thoughts

Craving a drink after work, Jjuksami Cheonho Main Branch was where I ended up. Between the ingredient combo in the octopus, shrimp, and pork belly stir-fry and the cheese and flying fish roe fried rice, I was able to cover both drinks and a full meal in one sitting, which was satisfying. The easy access from Cheonho Station also made it a comfortable stop to swing by without much planning.

If you're looking for good spicy octopus near Cheonho, Jjuksami Cheonho Main Branch is worth checking out — and if you've been, leave a comment with your own review.
