I usually love eel rice bowls, so I ended up visiting Manmok in Seolleung~ Even from the outside, it gave off such a strong this-place-must-be-good feeling~

## Manmok’s Japanese-style exterior and interior

The dark wood, eel illustration, and signboard all had a distinctly Japanese feel, and the interior was decorated in colors similar to the exterior~

On the left side of the entrance are solo seats, along with the kitchen and service area~ At the very back and along the right are separate sofa tables for around four to six people~

Right in front of the entrance and in the dining room, there were two large tables that could seat around eight people~ With all the different table types, it seemed suited to everything from eating alone to company dinners~

The restroom is at the far back on the left, and I liked that the men’s and women’s facilities were separate. Seeing the various hand creams on the sink made me appreciate the owner’s thoughtfulness too~

Overall, I loved how clean and upscale the interior felt~

## Whole eel rice bowl and Yebisu draft beer

Since this is known for its eel rice bowls, of course I ordered an eel rice bowl and a Yebisu draft beer~

The white kimchi and shredded radish kimchi side dishes were refreshing, and the Yebisu draft beer was cold and delicious~

Manmok says it uses freshwater eel from Gochang, considered among the best in Korea. I took a quick look at the menu and had a sip of beer, and before I knew it, the food was out~ So fast~

## How is Kanto-style unaju served?

There are Kanto-style, Kansai-style, and Nagoya-style eel rice bowls, and this one is Kanto-style~ For the Kanto style, the eel is grilled once, steamed, brushed with sauce, and grilled again. The flesh is very tender and soft, and it is served as unaju in a square lacquer box~ Because it is so soft, it is usually placed on top whole and cut as you eat it~

Kansai-style eel is grilled without steaming, so it is crisp outside and moist inside, and comes in mabushi form~ Mabushi refers to eel that is served cut into small pieces~ Nagoya-style builds on the Kansai style by adding toppings and a way of eating it with ochazuke (rice in green tea broth)~ Hitsumabushi is a representative Nagoya-style eel rice bowl~

*Beautifully grilled eel*

## Eel that was great with just wasabi or with rice

The eel was thick and well infused with sauce, filling the whole box. It was delicious with just wasabi on top, or placed over rice and eaten together~

Eating it on its own was great because you could really taste the eel’s flavor and seasoning, while eating it with rice was savory and delicious in another way~ One whole eel was quite a generous portion, so I was absolutely full after having it with the rice~

*Cheers to the eel rice bowl~*

The chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) that came with it was so soft that it felt like you could eat it through a straw~ There was even one cute little shrimp tucked right at the bottom~

The accompanying salad was also delicious and full of sesame flavor, and the soup was fragrant with wild matsutake mushrooms~ For dessert, they gave us ice cream, but not in a cup—it was a bar! We tried one matcha and one black tea flavor, and both were tasty~

## A great eel rice bowl restaurant for solo meals or company dinners

I’ve visited quite a few eel rice bowl places because I love them, and this was one of the standouts~ The flavor is something anyone, young or old, can enjoy, and the calm, upscale atmosphere makes it a good fit for solo meals, dates, get-togethers with friends, family meals, and company dinners~ Above all, the food comes out quickly, so it would be great for a busy lunch too~
