You know those days when only Korean food will do?! Haha. I wanted a full spread — warm rice, nicely grilled fish, and neat little side dishes — so I went looking for a good Korean restaurant in Yeouido and ended up at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido!

I went solo but still went all out with wood-fired mackerel grilled at 500℃ plus a side of jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork). Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside mackerel plus rice-thief jeyuk — total bullseye for someone who loves Korean food like me!!

## Where is Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido, and where do solo diners sit?

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido is located in the basement of the Lotte Castle Ivy building, close to Exit 2 of Saetgang Station. Easy to get to from the station, so it's a great spot for office workers looking for a Yeouido lunch spot!

Walking in, the seating was more spacious than I expected. In the center there's a square table set up perfectly for solo dining.

Further inside there's more separated seating, which would work well for a Yeouido work dinner, a group gathering, or a family meal, haha. The whole place felt clean and tidy, so it was zero pressure to walk in alone!

## What the writer ordered and what it cost

I ordered the grilled mackerel set for ₩13,500 and jeyuk for ₩10,500. Pretty ambitious for a solo meal, right?! Hahaha.

![Menu listing for the grilled mackerel set and jeyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-04-9onnu-721.webp)

I already love Korean food, and I'd read reviews saying both the grilled mackerel and the jeyuk were delicious, so I couldn't give either one up, haha. They also have a kids' tteokgalbi set, a kids' mackerel set, gorgonzola, and more, so families could easily each pick something they like!

## Mixing the sauces while the mackerel cooks

After ordering, before the main dish arrived, I got the sauces ready to go with the mackerel. Alongside the basic soy sauce, there was also a spicy, savory tofu-doenjang-style sauce.

![Soy sauce and mini wasabi condiments](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-05-u2skp-900.webp)

And personally the thing I was happiest to see was the mini wasabi, haha — individually portioned for convenience, and as a wasabi lover I was sold the second I saw it, haha.

## Grilled to order in a 500℃ wood-fired oven

The mackerel at Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang isn't pre-grilled and reheated — they say it's roasted fresh in the oven only after you order. So it takes at least about 10 minutes to arrive.

![Self bar with tteokbokki and sungnyung](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-07-qjnd9-900.webp)

But the wait wasn't boring at all!! The self bar had tteokbokki and warm sungnyung ready to snack on lightly while waiting!

More than anything, it was impressive to actually watch the staff grill the fish in the oven right there in the restaurant.

![Restaurant oven marked with 500℃](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-08-1q7t3-793.webp)

The big oven literally has '500℃' written on it, and when an order comes in, the staff score the fish, place it inside, and roast it front and back until golden brown.

Watching the mackerel come straight out of the blazing hot oven just built up my anticipation even more, haha. Definitely a different feeling from grilling fish at home in an air fryer or a pan!

## Crisp skin, moist flesh: the wood-fired mackerel

Finally, the grilled mackerel set arrived! A whole mackerel roasted to a beautiful golden brown — the color alone was on point, ugh.

The skin was crispy and savory while the flesh inside was moist and tender — a clear contrast in texture between outside and inside.

![Cross-section of the mackerel's skin and flesh](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-10-1nawt-900.webp)

Barely any of that typical mackerel fishiness — it was clean and savory, so my chopsticks kept going back for more!

![A piece of mackerel lifted with chopsticks](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-11-1tbcy-899.webp)

![Mackerel flesh served with soy sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-12-da1ks-900.webp)

It also wasn't overly greasy, so I think even people who don't usually love grilled fish could enjoy this fairly comfortably.

![Full table spread of the grilled mackerel set](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-13-1j80q-900.webp)

They say they use salt that's been aged more than 10 years to remove bitterness, and maybe that's why — instead of a sharp salty hit, the mackerel's own savory flavor really came through!

![Close-up of the oven-grilled mackerel](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-15-lw1xc-966.webp)

Grilled fresh straight out of the 500℃ oven, it had a depth of flavor that felt distinctly different from mackerel grilled at home.

## Free side dish and rice refills at the self bar

The grilled mackerel set came with a variety of side dishes including lettuce, radish kimchi, and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry).

![Side dishes including lettuce, radish kimchi, and japchae](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-16-2ltwg-900.webp)

![Side dishes taken from the self bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-17-im8ou-900.webp)

Every side dish was mild and comforting, like home cooking, and they went really well with the mackerel. Best of all, you can help yourself to as much as you want from the self bar, so there's no worry about running out — great for a hearty meal!

Put a little rice and a piece of mackerel on a lettuce leaf, dip lightly in soy sauce, add a bit of wasabi, and take a big bite — total rice thief!! The clean, savory mackerel paired with crunchy lettuce was a great combo, and eating it alongside the mild side dishes kept it feeling light all the way through!!

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido lets you refill not just the side dishes but the rice too, so it's a great Korean restaurant for anyone with a big appetite. Definitely a good Yeouido lunch spot for office workers who want a filling meal!

## Was the 10,500 won jeyuk worth adding?

The mackerel alone would have been plenty filling, but I'd seen a lot of reviews saying their jeyuk was also great, so I ordered it as a side. One bite in and I immediately understood why people order it together!!

![Jeyuk ordered as a side dish](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-18-1fxgo-900.webp)

The seasoning wasn't too salty or sharp — a nicely balanced sweet-and-salty flavor.

![Close-up of jeyuk coated in sweet-salty sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-19-ssq8t-900.webp)

On top of that there was a subtle smoky char, giving it that perfect truck-stop-style jeyuk feel. The sauce soaked into the meat well without being heavy, and it went really well with rice.

![Jeyuk eaten together with rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-20-2tb95-900.webp)

If the mackerel is the clean, savory option, the jeyuk is the spicy-sweet one, so switching between the two made for a really good combo.

![Lettuce wrap with rice and jeyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-21-75nak-900.webp)

This one too — pile rice and jeyuk on a lettuce leaf and wrap up a big bite... total rice thief, hahaha. Switching between mackerel and jeyuk, there was no way I was stopping at just one bowl of rice, haha.

![Solo dining table with both mackerel and jeyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-22-1uhca-900.webp)

## Good for a solo meal or a Yeouido group dinner

Going solo and ordering both the grilled mackerel and the jeyuk, I did wonder at first if I'd overdone it...!! But once I actually started eating, both were so good that I cleaned every plate.

![Empty plates after finishing the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-23-17xge-733.webp)

If you're someone who enjoys a hearty Korean meal, I'd fully recommend this combo!

![Final shot of the mackerel and jeyuk combo](https://img.superchart.com/images/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap/hwadeok-godeungeo-bansang-yeouido-honbap-24-11y3s-900.webp)

If you're searching for a Korean restaurant near Saetgang Station, a Korean restaurant in Yeouido, a lunch spot in Yeouido, or just craving properly grilled fish in Yeouido, I recommend Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido!!
