We took a family trip to Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do with our little one over the weekend! Since we were staying near Phoenix Park, I looked for good places to eat nearby and found this spot — Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon! Here's our review after visiting with our kid~

## 10 minutes by car from Phoenix Park: location and hours

## Open-run it and skip the wait entirely

We left early in the morning and arrived not long after opening. Thanks to that we ate without any wait at all, but by the time we finished a line had already formed! No wonder this place is a famous restaurant in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do 👍🏻 There are waiting chairs set up in front and to the side of the restaurant, so you can sit while you wait.

Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon is famous enough to have been featured on several TV shows already~ I heard chef Edward Lee even visited recently.

They also sell buckwheat-based products~ Our snack-loving little one picked out a bag after the meal haha. After the omija (schisandra berry) puffed rice snack from Mungyeong last time, this trip started with buckwheat puffed rice in Pyeongchang~ haha

The interior has plenty of seating and a separate room space too. Even though it wasn't long after opening, the seats were already nearly full! A famous restaurant really is different~

## Buckwheat sprout suyuk: tender meat our toddler devoured

First to arrive was the buckwheat sprout suyuk (boiled pork slices). The meat was unbelievably tender~ On the way there our little one suddenly said their stomach hurt, so I worried whether they'd even be able to eat properly, but turns out they were just hungry haha. They put on quite the eating show with the suyuk.

Salted shrimp... my husband said the texture reminded him of tuna haha. It comes with pickled shredded chili, buckwheat sprouts, and suyuk. The meat had no off smell and wasn't too fatty, just completely tender~ Our little one usually doesn't eat tough meat well, but they ate this so well haha. Since it's made with domestic pork, we could eat it with peace of mind, though the portion being small was a bit of a letdown.

The buckwheat sprouts didn't have a particularly strong flavor, but they felt salad-like, so eating them with the suyuk was nice for cutting the richness.

## Is it okay to bring kids? Rice with seaweed soup and gim

When ordering, the staff explained that since the noodles are 100% buckwheat, the bitterness might make it hard for a child to eat, so we ordered an extra bowl of rice, and they provided seaweed soup and gim (dried seaweed) separately. No worries at all for a family meal with kids!

The buckwheat noodles in broth come with the broth served separately.

Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon apparently makes its 100% pure buckwheat noodles by blending bitter and sweet buckwheat by hand every day, with no flour mixed in.

### Migamyeon noodles in broth

The noodles had that easy-snapping texture along with buckwheat's distinct nutty aroma, and the more you chewed, the more a subtle sweetness and nuttiness came through. They said kids might struggle with buckwheat's characteristic bitterness, but our little one ate it very well.

The broth was clear and clean through and through! The nutty perilla seed powder blended naturally with the buckwheat noodles. It was a clean, light bowl of buckwheat noodles that let both the buckwheat itself and the broth's nuttiness shine.

### Bibim guksu

The bibim guksu (mixed noodles) also wasn't overpowering. Usually you'd think of bibim guksu as tangy, sweet, and spicy, but Migayeon's version had a seasoning that let buckwheat's nutty character shine rather than overwhelming the noodles ✨

The combination of healthy pure buckwheat noodles and mild seasoning would satisfy anyone who, like me, prefers the natural flavor of ingredients.

## In summary

Migayeon is run by Oh Suk-hee, a Master Korean Chef recognized by South Korea, and apparently holds three buckwheat-related patents. Having studied this single ingredient — buckwheat — for so long and drawn out its true flavor really came through in every dish. From the noodles to the broth, the seasoning, and the suyuk, everything seemed to bring out each ingredient's own flavor while keeping the overall harmony in mind. On top of that, all the staff were kind, which made for a great start to our first meal in Pyeongchang.

A tidy, healthy buckwheat meal made by a South Korean Master Korean Chef! If you're traveling around Pyeongchang or Bongpyeong, I recommend Bongpyeong Memil Migayeon, a master chef's restaurant in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, as a great place to visit with parents or kids!
