## In short

Ju Myeongdang is a Korean dining bar serving charcoal-grilled aged meats on Jangdong-ro in Dongmyeong-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju. From a window seat on a Tuesday evening, the Samchon Suljang set at 49,000 won and a Hanmaek cream draft beer at 4,000 won brought one basket of beef yukjeon (pan-fried beef in egg batter), straw-fire seasoned galbi, yukhoe yubu-chobap, fried peppers, doenjang sulbap and cheese potato jeon. Even on a weeknight Ju Myeongdang was full of work dinners, and with private rooms it works for both dates and group gatherings.

Hi, this is Kim Troll ෆ Today I visited Ju Myeongdang, a Korean dining bar in Dongmyeong-dong that's popular for work dinners.

## Window seats over Dongmyeong-dong and the private rooms

📍 A 7-minute walk from the Salesio Girls' High School bus stop. If you've walked around Dongmyeong-dong, you've probably noticed Ju Myeongdang before — it's a great-atmosphere dining bar that suits everything from dates to work dinners!

![Window seat at Ju Myeongdang overlooking the Dongmyeong-dong street](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-04-escq3-900.webp)

The window seats look straight out onto the Dongmyeong-dong street, so you can enjoy the view while eating, which gave a nice open feeling. The place itself is spacious too, so the tables didn't feel cramped, and there were plenty of seats for bigger groups — great for gatherings. Even though I visited on a Tuesday evening, there were quite a few tables having work dinners, so it seems like a spot people head to for weeknight get-togethers in Dongmyeong-dong too.

![Private room seating area at Ju Myeongdang](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-05-3thg7-900.webp)

There was also a private room available, and it was spacious enough to comfortably fit a group — great for gatherings. It seemed like a perfect space to chat and have a drink without worrying about other tables.

## What is on the menu at Ju Myeongdang

![Menu board of Korean sets and straw-fire aged meats at Ju Myeongdang](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-06-1a2xy-900.webp)

True to a Korean dining bar, the menu was packed with a wide range of Korean dishes — from set menus like Imo Babsang, Samchon Suljang and Myeongdang Gujeolpan that let you enjoy several dishes at once, to meal options like mushroom hot pot, cold noodles and noodle soup, and straw-fire aged meats like pork belly, galbi and gabrisal. Great for picking whatever suits your mood, whether you want a full meal or drinking snacks.

### How the table is set

Water and small plates, plus a ladle, tongs, spoon and chopsticks, were all neatly set out. I was seated right under the air conditioner and got a bit chilly, but they even brought a blanket so I could eat warm and comfortably :) These little touches made the meal feel even more pleasant.

## What comes in the 49,000 won Samchon Suljang set

![Samchon Suljang set with a glass of Hanmaek cream draft beer](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-07-1qp5g-900.webp)

Samchon Suljang set ₩49,000, Hanmaek cream draft beer ₩4,000. The Samchon Suljang set — packed with beef yukjeon, seasoned galbi, yukhoe yubu-chobap (raw beef tartare on fried tofu rice), fried peppers, doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice) and potato jeon — let me enjoy a bunch of different snacks at once, perfect for ordering with a drink. They had a good range of drinks too, and I went with a glass of Hanmaek cream draft beer!

![Samchon Suljang set arranged in a basket](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-08-1xb1u-900.webp)

![Main snacks from the Samchon Suljang set in a basket](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-09-1894b-900.webp)

![Full table spread of the Samchon Suljang set](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-10-1k58g-900.webp)

The main dishes came out beautifully arranged in a basket, and just looking at it, I could really feel the Korean bar vibe. It looked like a lot for two people, but once we started drinking, we kept reaching for one thing after another and it went down surprisingly easily haha.

![Full Samchon Suljang table setting](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-11-1vj0q-900.webp)

### Imo Babsang vs Samchon Suljang: what is different

Ju Myeongdang's signature menu, Imo Babsang, and Samchon Suljang seem similar but are actually a bit different:

- Imo Babsang) straw-fire char siu bossam, straw-fire seasoned galbi, beef yukjeon, kimchi jjigae, cold noodles, seasonal bibimbap
- Samchon Suljang) beef yukjeon, straw-fire galbi, fried peppers, doenjang sulbap, yukhoe yubu-chobap, cheese potato jeon

If Imo Babsang feels like a hearty home-cooked meal, Samchon Suljang is more like a drinking spread where the food and alcohol just keep going down haha.

![Yukhoe yubu-chobap, fried peppers, beef yukjeon and seasoned galbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-12-1gi08-900.webp)

The main dishes — yukhoe yubu-chobap, fried peppers, beef yukjeon, and seasoned galbi — all came out really generously. Side dishes like cabbage, lettuce, pickled onions, gat kimchi (mustard leaf kimchi) and cabbage salad also came along, perfect for pairing. With everything from mains to sides packed into one basket, it looked hearty and had that warm, cozy Korean bar feel.

![Side dishes of lettuce, gat kimchi and pickled onions](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-13-1gl84-900.webp)

Salt dipping sauce, ssamjang (dipping paste), peppers and garlic were also provided to eat alongside the meat. Depending on preference, you could dip it cleanly in the salt sauce or wrap it up with garlic and pepper — nice to try the meat in different combinations.

The yukhoe yubu-chobap looked appetizing, with a mound of red yukhoe piled on top of thick fried tofu rice. The fried peppers had a golden, crispy batter with the plump pepper peeking through, making me want to dig in right away.

The seasoned galbi was glossy and looked delicious at a glance, with a subtle smoky flavor from the straw fire and a deep sauce color that made my mouth water. The beef yukjeon had a thin, golden egg coating over the meat — the kind of visual that instantly makes you think of makgeolli.

![Beef yukjeon coated in egg batter](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-16-1lg3o-900.webp)

Cabbage salad and lettuce wraps also came out, great for eating with the meat. The cabbage salad was spicy with a subtle sweetness — tasty even on its own, which kept me reaching for more.

![Cabbage salad and lettuce side dishes](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-17-t0pa2-900.webp)

### How the fried peppers, beef yukjeon and straw-fire galbi taste

The fried peppers were fully stuffed, crispy on the outside and moist and soft inside — a really good texture. The pepper's subtle flavor blended with the savory filling, and combined with the crunchy batter, it made a perfect one-bite drinking snack.

The beef yukjeon also had a nicely golden egg coating between thin slices of beef. The meat was soft and moist, and the savory egg coating made it a clean, light dish to enjoy. It wasn't overly seasoned, so dipping it lightly in the salt sauce added a nice savory saltiness — it went well as a drinking snack too :)

Grilled over straw fire, the subtle smoky aroma paired well with the galbi's signature sweet-and-salty flavor, and the meat was tender enough to eat piece by piece. It was good on its own, but even cleaner when wrapped in lettuce with the meat and cabbage salad together.

### Yukhoe yubu-chobap (raw beef on seasoned tofu pouches)

The yukhoe yubu-chobap was bigger than expected, almost too big to eat in one bite. With a generous mound of yukhoe on top of thin fried tofu, it looked hearty from the start.

![Yukhoe yubu-chobap piled generously with raw beef](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-19-2ecnc-900.webp)

The thin fried tofu had a subtle sweetness, and combined with the soft yukhoe and clean-tasting rice, the overall flavor was soft and savory. Given its size, it was easier to eat in smaller bites rather than all at once, and it worked surprisingly well as a drinking snack.

![Doenjang sulbap simmered in a stone pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-20-6gdm2-900.webp)

### Doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice)

The doenjang sulbap came out bubbling in a stone pot, giving off a warm soup-dish feel. With rice mixed into a rich soybean-paste broth, it looked hearty just to look at.

![Stone pot of doenjang sulbap packed with rice and ingredients](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-21-ilrxk-900.webp)

The rice and ingredients were packed generously into the stone pot, making it easy to scoop with a spoon, and it came out piping hot — a dish that paired well with a drink.

![Spooning up the doenjang sulbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-22-1bscx-900.webp)

The rich, savory, slightly salty flavor of the doenjang came through strongly, and eating it with rice felt filling. The broth wasn't too heavy, giving a warm, satisfying feeling — a good dish to spoon in between bites of meat and other snacks.

![Cheese potato jeon topped generously with cheese](https://img.superchart.com/images/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang/jumyeongdang-dongmyeong-dong-samchon-sulsang-23-r0wfd-900.webp)

### Cheese potato jeon and galbi lettuce wraps

The cheese potato jeon looked like shredded potato pancake piled with plenty of cheese. Unlike a typical potato pancake, the batter was extremely chewy, so the first bite gave a stretchy texture. The clean flavor came with a savory, salty richness, making for an addictive overall taste. The chewy texture made it fun to pull apart piece by piece, and it paired well as a drinking snack.

I tried wrapping seasoned galbi, pickled onions and gat kimchi together in lettuce — the sweet-salty galbi combined with the tangy-salty pickled onions and the sharp gat kimchi flavor cut through the meat's rich sauce cleanly. With the crunchy lettuce added in, everything felt lighter in the mouth, and these three sides went so well with the galbi that this was, for me personally, the best way to eat it.
