## A tonkatsu lunch for three near Olympic Park

Olympic Park is near my parents’ home, so I come to this area fairly often. My younger sibling is a total tonkatsu fiend, so the three of us, Mom included, went out for lunch. While looking for somewhere to eat near Olympic Park, we made a reservation at Riae Premium Olympic Park Branch (리애 프리미엄 올림픽공원직영점).

The restaurant is in Seongnae-dong, Gangdong-gu, close to Olympic Park. It is near Olympic Park Station and Dunchon-dong Station, so it is easy enough to reach by public transit (public transit recommended🚶🏻), but there is also parking, so we drove! They have high chairs too, so I should come back with Rona sometime👶🏻

*Busy kitchen*

Apparently, it began as a tiny, humble tonkatsu shop in a back alley behind the old village in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam-gu. Over roughly 21 years, they have personally trimmed the equivalent of 13,500 pigs’ worth of sirloin and tenderloin, and fried a whopping 624,000 servings of tonkatsu. You can smell the expertise~

There was also a separate space for dining alone. We visited at lunchtime and there were already quite a few customers, which made me think, ah, maybe this really is a famous tonkatsu spot near Olympic Park 👍🏻

## Ordering tenderloin, sirloin, and premium sirloin to suit everyone

We ordered a good spread of the signature dishes. Mom is a tenderloin person, I am a sirloin person, and my sibling is a premium sirloin person, so we naturally chose one each—and it worked out perfectly👏🏻 You order from the kiosk at each table, and Apple Pay is accepted! iPhone users, scream👻

> 📋 What we ordered

- Filet mignon tenderloin (hire) katsu
- Jirisan aged sirloin (rosu) katsu
- Premium special-grade rosu (sirloin) katsu

Just from the look of it, the breading was not overly thick and the meat was nicely substantial, so I was excited even before taking a bite.

### How tender was the tenderloin katsu?

First up was Mom’s favorite, the filet mignon tenderloin (hire) katsu. Its signature tender texture came through beautifully, and the breading did not cover up the flavor of the meat, making it easy to enjoy in a clean, simple way.

⭐️If you usually love tenderloin tonkatsu, this is definitely a menu item you will be happy with.

### The nutty texture of aged sirloin katsu

My pick was the Jirisan aged sirloin (rosu) katsu. I tend to prefer sirloin to tenderloin when I eat tonkatsu, so this was more my style, as expected. It had sirloin’s distinctive nutty flavor and a nice chew, without ever feeling tough. I found myself wondering if this is why they use aged meat—to let the flavor of the meat itself shine.

### What made the premium sirloin katsu different?

I also tried a bite of the premium special-grade rosu (sirloin) katsu that my sibling chose, and even though it was also sirloin, it felt different again. Just a bit nuttier than regular rosu katsu😋

## Tonkatsu with salt and wasabi

I think ordering several kinds of tonkatsu and sharing them like this is better than having only one kind🩵 And here is Riae’s special touch✨ there are lots of ways to enjoy the tonkatsu!

There was not just the standard tonkatsu sauce; salt, wasabi, and a house sauce made with olive oil and lemon were available too, so we could choose according to our preferences. Salt or wasabi worked especially well when we wanted to really taste the meat.

When tonkatsu tastes mostly of the breading, it is less fun to dip it in all these different things. Riae’s tonkatsu let the flavor of the meat itself come through, so it was great to try it different ways.

As we ate… the portions were seriously huge❣️

## Packing up the leftovers—and satisfying three different tastes

In the end, we could not finish all the tonkatsu, so we packed up the leftovers to take home haha. Overall, I think Riae Premium Olympic Park Branch would suit people who prefer tonkatsu where they can properly taste good-quality meat, rather than simply crispy breading.

It is also in a decent location if you are looking for Japanese-style food in Seongnae-dong or a meal before or after a walk around Olympic Park. Three of us visited with different preferences—tenderloin, sirloin, and premium sirloin—and it was nice that each of us could choose exactly what we wanted.

There were quite a few customers when we visited at lunchtime, so I thought, popular places really do have a reason! With seating ranging from solo-dining spots to tables for families, it seems good for all sorts of occasions. Keep it in mind if you are looking for a hearty lunch near Olympic Park :)
